[lace] DFZ22 Symposium?
Hello Arachnids, There is some concern about Angharad Rixon, because the Doily Free Zone Symposium is supposed to be coming up soon and no one has heard anything from Angharad about it, and she has not been answering questions on the DFZ site. Do any of you know anything about how she is or what is happening with DFZ? Is there anything that we can do to help her? Thanks, Carolyn -- Carolyn M. Re: [lace] Lacemaker Assistance in Massachusetts, USA
There is an active lace guild in your friend's area, called the New England Lace Group (not to be confused with the group of the same name in Australia). RE: [lace] lace, Virtual lace classes
I'm following this thread with great interest and am about to start my first virtual lace class as a student. It is needle lace instead of bobbin lace, so it will be interesting to see what challenges are unique to lace made in the hand vs on a pillow. Somehow students will need to arrange a camera to show what is happening in their hands. I'm going to clamp my phone in a goose-neck stand like Kathy Draves described and face the camera down over my shoulder. I'd love to hear more constructive criticism of virtual learning experiences - successful and unsuccessful practices - from more students and teachers of "hands-on" classes! -- Carolyn M. RE: [lace] Why is Burano mesh very rectangular looking?
Technically it is made the same way as Alencon ground but pulled more tightly. However, if you look at how the work is held, I hypothesize that it is tighter in Burano because the work is attached to a stable pillow and they pull the thread to the side, making it easier to get it tight (Alencon work is held in the hand, and pull away from the body). Also, it is easier to get a uniform mesh with a tight return thread than with a looser one, because you have to exert more fine control to keep it *uniformly* looser. At least with my limited experience with both methods >What is it about the mesh of Burano that makes it look more brick like?Work a row of twisted buttonhole stitches, then whip back. So do the Burano workers tension the whipping back part more strongly? -Carolyn -- Carolyn M. Nancy and Adele - Benton and Johnson are now part of Toye, Kenning, & Spencer, "By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen, Suppliers of Gold & Silver Laces, Insignia, and Embroidery", since 1685. RE: [lace] Spain's rare Frisado Lace
Following up on Jeri's, Susan's, and MarÃa's posts, I wanted to mention that I will be teaching Frisado de Valladolid needle lace at the Heritage Village Lace Guild's annual seminar in Amherst NY (USA) in June 2018. You should also watch for the May-June 2018 annual lace issue of *Piecework* Magazinewhere there just *might* be an article and new project for frisado lace Finally, I wanted to compliment Susan's lace work - her wreath, and the project she did in my class in Ithaca this fall, were very well done! -Carolyn Where the warmth of my Spanish spring trip is but a memory in a snowy New England winter -- Carolyn M. [lace] Need needlearts volunteers for Detroit Maker Faire, July 30-31
Here is a great opportunity to introduce lace (and other handwork) to lots of young people! Calling all local tatters in the Detroit, Michigan (USA) area! Maker Faires are held in several cities for the DIY and "hacker" crowd. They are attended by thousands of people, young and old. The Detroit Maker Faire, which is held at The Henry Ford Museum, is heavy on creative technologies, but they do have a "NeedleArts Zone" where they have hands-on projects for people to try. They depend on volunteer teachers to run the lessons, and in return for 4 hours of your time, you get free admission to the whole weekend of the faire. I am copying a recent email I got from Frederikka Payne ( frederi...@aurorayarns.net), the organizer for the Detroit NeedleArts Zone, below. Maybe if enough tatters contact her ASAP she will put tatting back on the programif I was going to be in Michigan, I'd be there, but it is too long of a drive from Massachusetts Link to general Maker Faire info: http://www.makerfairedetroit.com/ -Carolyn "Hi Everybody -- Well, it's getting down to the wire and we have an awful lot of open slots for teaching at The NeedleArts Zone. I have removed Tatting from the schedule, since no tatters seemed to want to join us this year. Of course we still need teachers of all stripes, and remember, you do not need to be an expert. We have knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, needlepoint and spinning slots available. And we have an amazing new thing -- weaving on little hand-held looms! Pretty much anyone with a comprehension of weaving (think those little potholders we made as kids) can do this and teach this. We can give you a five-minute instruction and you will be ready to teach! Please join us at Maker Faire for the time of your life -- free admission for the weekend for just 4 hours of your time, sharing your love of needlearts with people of all ages! RE: [lace] A new booklet on needlelace
In response to Devon ("But it appears to me that this might be a print on demand book, such as we have been discussing from time to time. I am not sure whether it has to be printed and sent to you, or if you can download it from your computer, either for a fee, or for free. ) I visited the publisher of this book, Nuova S1, in Bologna last summer. It is a small family operation but is not POD. They keep an inventory of printed books for sale. This is the same publisher that has put out the recent series of Aemilia Ars and Burano books. Holly van Sciver and Maria Provencher also carry some of their titles. [lace] lace museums
I'm shocked to hear about the Brugge lace school and museum closing, it has been a goal of mine to get there! On a positive note, I just found out about the new lace museum that opened this year in Calais, which may have already been discussed on Arachne but missed by me.
