I was also surprised to see that the lacemaker was using what I know as "Bucks thumpers" to make Bedfordshire lace. Thumpers refers to the style of bobbin she is using. Re: [lace] What is best way to inventory lace books?
Hi Jeri The New England Lace Group uses Book Connect from Collectorz.com. This is an online, web-based software that is very easy to use, and can be accessed from anywhere. The subscription costs $24.95 per year and includes regular software updates. Collectorz.com also offers a version called CLZ Books, which is a one time purchase of $14.95, which includes many of the same features as Book Connect. There is also Book Collector which is downloadable software, so access is limited to the computer where it is downloaded. The one-time cost is $49.95 and software updates are free for one year. Book Connect features approx. 40 editable fields, including author, country, language, dimensions, edition, issue, volume, title, ISBN, publisher, publication date, number of pages, purchase price, genres, category, sub-category, description, condition, condition, current value, purchase date, purchase location. NELG has categorized our library books by type of lace, instruction books, history, identification, etc. The catalog can be downloaded and printed and you can customize which fields appear in the online catalog and printed catalog. NELG has further identified our books by their location (i.e. which box they are located in). This helps when someone wants to borrow a book from our library since several members have several boxes of books each. Books can be added by scanning or keying in the ISBN, or the author and/or title. The system automatically searches for a match. For example, a search today for Pamela Nottingham returned 20 results. All results include an image of the cover, the title, author, publisher, publication date, ISBN, number of pages, dimensions, and subject categories (e.g. bobbin lace, lace and lacemaking). When you have located the book you want to add, simply click "Add to Collection", after which you can edit the record to add additional information. Books can also be added manually, and a photograph of the cover uploaded. This is very useful for self-published books or articles that would not have an ISBN. We have a public link on our website to our library: https://cloud.collector z.com/NELACE/books/view. The view can be customized to display different information - for example, if you want to look at the books by cover, rather than in a list. There is also the option to manage book loans and create a wish list for future purchase. NELG has used Book Connect for the past several years and would highly recommend it. RE: [lace] Lace Fish, finished in a short beginner session
Dear Jeri and fellow arachnids The lace fish patterns are on Alex Stillwell's website; here is the direct link to the patterns/instructions: https://alexstillwell.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/fish-1-9.pdf. Alex provides the following helpful advice on how to print your patterns: "This set of pages should be printed using the paper size A4 setting and the 'booklet' facility of your printer. Even if you use a different sized paper this should give you two pages per side arranged so that you can place the pages on top of each other and fold them in half to make a booklet. If you do not have this facility print two pages per side. The A4 setting is needed so that the prickings will be the correct size. " If you want to browse Alex's website where there are plenty more free patterns (for children and adults), the address is https://alexstillwell.wordpress.com/. Re: [lace] English lace museums - updates
Dear Leonard I live close to Bedford and have visited the Higgins several times since it re-opened after the refurbishment. Although the lace that is now on display is limited, there IS a lace display of some of the key Thomas Lester pieces. There is also a display of lacemaking equipment featuring a pillow horse, a bobbin winder, a lace lamp and a piece of Bucks point in progress on a pillow. I also recently attended a talk on the Lester Collection and was fortunate to be able to view and photograph all the other pieces in the collection. The Keeper of Social History is Lydia Saul. She gave the presentation and is very keen to show the lace to anyone who is interested - whether in a group or as an individual. Her contact information is on the Higgins website at http://www.thehigginsbedford.org.uk/section_5.aspx. Jill Milton Keynes, Bucks Bedford Museum and the Cecil Higgins Museum have been combined, and one of the casualties is the lace displayà - there isn't one, and individualsà asking to see specified pieces of their marvellous collection have not managed. à If you do want to try, make contact first and a firm appointment, good luck, and let us know if you get anywhere with them. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] About Jeri's Posts
In my experience, life frequently follows the 80/20 rule, where 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people, and the same seems to apply to Arachne. There are prolific contributors, and some who lurk and never post, and others who post from time to time when there is something they feel they can comment on. All members of any group should be made to feel they have equal worth, regardless of what contribution they make. It is unfortunate that a specific lace group was mentioned by Jeri. I am friends with many of the members of that group, and most of them will not post on Arachne because they feel that they are not as erudite as some of those who regularly post. If their personal opinion is that they have nothing worthy to say, then why should they write? I wonder how many other Arachne members might feel the same way? I do not comment on Jeri's posts - even though it is clear that they are very thoroughly researched. They are most likely of great interest to some members, but I skim them because I am usually only casually interested in reading about a topic in such detail. Being a very active volunteer in many groups, I have given up expecting thanks or even an acknowledgement of my contribution. That goes with the territory, I'm afraid. Sometimes I get down-hearted, but for the most part I enjoy what I do and am pleased when I hear that others also enjoy it. I admit that getting a 'thank you' once in a while is very gratifying, but it is not my motivation. Re: [lace] Demonstrating strategy - Gossip Pillows
A couple of years ago at a demonstration, one of the lace makers brought a 24 cookie pillow for beginners to make a snake. The enterprising lace maker had put 4 prickings on the pillow (along each point of the compass: north, south, east and west) and had 4 children work at the same time. It was an extremely good use of limited demonstration space and the children loved being able to keep an eye on what the others were doing and who was working the fastest. Re: [lace] Blue film
I agree with Devon that copying the pricking onto colored card is a good approach, but will only work if your printer doesn't chew up the card, or if you can convince the local Staples store that you aren't infringing on copyright when you want something copied when it has a copyright mark on it (like many lace patterns). I have explained, in vain, that it is for personal use, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. If you chose to use colored paper instead, it should ideally also be stiffened - especially if the pricking is intended for more than one use. If you order something from the EU to ship to the US you should not be charged VAT. In fact, SMP Lace states quite clearly on their website that they do not charge VAT to anyone outside the EU, which equates to a savings of approx. 16.67%. In addition, there is no surcharge if you use VISA , Mastercard or AMEX. Overseas orders up to 2 kg (approx. 4.5 lbs) are sent airmail (which will cost around GBP 18.00). Alternatives do exist, but I will stick (pun intended) with the blue film Jill, Milton Keynes, Bucks On 20 November 2013 at 14:36 dmt11h...@aol.com wrote: Apparently blue film is widely available in England. I am grateful that the supplier does, in fact, go to a lot of effort to buy this film from England, as it seems that it is impossible to get without sending funds overseas, and contending with the intricacies of the VAT system. But, the question arises as to why it is still the norm in classes in the US for the teacher to arrive with the patterns printed on white paper, rather than on blue paper, since at home we are all responding to the unavailability of blue film by photo copying the pattern onto blue paper or card, which is laughably easy and cheap. The only time I need the blue film is when I go to a class. When something is unavailable, people switch to other things instead. There is a clip under more info nonUK people might be able to see. Here's the blurb The Reformation in England witnessed the destruction of the most brilliant art of the medieval age. Church paintings and stained glass - even sculpture - were destroyed throughout England in the name of religion. And yet one art survived against the odds - the art of medieval embroidery. Portable and easily squirrelled away, English embroidery was spirited out of the country in the 16th century and many brilliant examples survive today - if slightly unappreciated and forgotten in Italian churches and museums, even the Vatican. And yet it is an art form that rivalled the very finest in medieval painting or stained glass and for 200 years was the finest embroidery in the Western world. Known simply as Opus Anglicanum (English work), the work of English embroiders was desired by kings and popes throughout Christendom. Dan Jones, Plantagenet expert and medievalist, goes in search of these fragile yet stunning survivors from the great age of embroidery - encountering a world of finery, bejewelled luxury and sacred beauty on an undreamt-of scale. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03c2766/Fabric_of_Britain_The_Wonder_of _Embroidery/ Enjoy! Re: [lace] Prince George's christening
Thanks Bev. Â I am very surprised that there is machine made lace on this piece of heirloom clothing. It seems the Royal Family has really lowered their standards. Â A lot of the lacemakers I know have purposely gone to the major effort of making lace for the christening robe of their grandchildren. Â Too bad if the Royal Family can't patronise a national treasure and do the same. [lace] Prince George's christening
I just read in The Times that when Prince George is christened in late October, he will wear a christening robe of fine Honiton lace. Â The robe will be a handmade replica of the robe made in 1841 for the christening of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Vicky. Does anyone know who has been involved in making the lace and how they were selected for such an honour? Re: [lace] Its been a while coming
Hi Sue, They are Romanian point lace and the cord is worked with a crochet hook, laid out on a pattern (just like needlelace) and then filling stitches worked. The cord is fun to do (once you've worked out how to do it!) and it is one of the easiest laces to design your own patterns. There are several good tutorials on YouTube, as well as some great books by Syliva Murariu. Re: [lace-chat] Lace and vision
I too had problems a few years ago with a large cluster of floaters, that at one time left me with doughnut vision in one eye for several months. No lacemaking, sewing, cross stitch, knitting, etc. and not much reading. I can attest to how frustrating it is, but there is nothing that can be done except wait and hope that they will dissipate or drift out of your line of sight. That's what happened with mine - the large cluster has broken up into smaller clusters that have drifted to the side. They are still there, but I have either grown so used to them that I can now ignore them, or I have compensated somehow. I know it's hard, but in my experience, patience is really the only way to deal with floaters. Having checked a recipe for the preparation for salt beef, it is exactly the way you would prepare corned beef from scratch in the US. The pages were in a leather bound book that originally belonged to a dealer, possibly John Spencer of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Two of the pages are of black lace, the remainder are white.
