Re: [lace] Bobbin storage

2015-06-27 Thread J-D Hammett
Hi Fellow Arachnids,

My bobbins are mainly stored in bobbin bags which are flat and have narrow
sections that take a pair of bobbins. Each bag which is slightly padded
contains about forty or so pairs and the bags can be stored on top of one
another. They are easy to carry and you can also use them for wound bobbins to
take with you. They are sorted by type. If wound bobbins are stored I leave the
thread label (or the reel/tube if not too thick) in the bag with the bobbins.

I also have a good store of wooden cigar boxes -given to me some time ago by a
smoker- which have been cleaned thoroughly and well-aired to get rid of the
smell. On the end panel is marked which type of bobbins they contain. Again,
they stack and being about the right length for bobbins -about 6 x 5 x 5 inches
(15 x 12.5 x 12.5 cms) they contain many bobbins.

Mind you, if I were to complete the projects in progress all at the same time I
might be in trouble ;-)

Happy lace making,

Joepie in Beautiful East Sussex, UK where the sun is shining and it is warm!! I
love it.

I am wondering how you store your bobbins when they are not in use? Are you
storing English Midlands or Continentals?

Ex-video boxes are good for bobbin storage or for taking spare one to class
or demonstration/course etc.
I treated myself to a small chest of drawers. It has 11 drawers about 3cm
deep, and 30cm wide. It's full!
I then decided to buy a second one, but use that as a jewellery box.
Only problem I have now I want a second one for bobbins, is that I cannot
find the seller anymore on eBay.

I store mine in material roll wraps that hold about 40 pairs, in pairs if I can
as have a thing about keeping my bobbins stored in pairs, silly I know but
drives me crazy if they don't at least start off in pairs. Mine are nearly all
Midlands.

Re: [lace] Bobbin storage

2015-06-27 Thread AGlez
What a good question! I see that we all have the same storage problems!

I have kept changing the way I store my bobbins, and now I have them in
transparent plastic boxes (in fact, those for chocolates of Ferrero-Rocher,
 http://idealgift.com.my/add-on-gifts/ferrero-t16.html). They are the
perfect size of my bobbins (all continentals, of different nationalities).
I have many of these boxes and it is really practical to be able to see
which bobbins are inside each box.

I keep the thread in metallic boxes, usually nice painted ones, belonging
to biscuits or chocolates. They are so nice, that I do not want to throw
them away. But they are not transparent, so I have to glue a sticker at the
front indicating what kind of thread is inside: linen, cotton, silk, white,
colour, metallic... etc. I find transparent boxes more practical.

As a matter of fact, I think the best solution is a cabinet, as Alice
mentions. But again... we need the space for the cabinet!

My pillows do not have a specific place, they are all around the house: on
top of book shelves, on pillow stands in the sitting room, in my studio, on
the dining room table... By the way, a good solution of getting some more
space in your home is borrowing the pillows not in use! I have borrowed a
big bolster pillow and am really happy not to see it around all day! I hope
my friend takes a lot time to finish her project!!

Have a good weekend and happy lacemaking!

I am wondering how you store your bobbins when they are not in use? Are you

I just finished a project. For the first time (probably in my life) I do not
have any bobbins on a pillow. I discovered that I have many more bobbins than
places to store them. Since I am going to the IOLI Convention this year I am
going to try not to start anything new. I have plenty of embroidery to work on
so I won't be idle for the next month.

Liz,
I use those plastic pencil boxes that kids use for school!
One year I picked up a couple dozen on clearance for 25cents each
and passed them out to our guild during retreat. They stack nicely!
I just need to add some labels. In addition to the new blue ones
I bought, now I also have a few that my kids actually used in
elementary school. I also use one as a tool box in my lace tote bag.
Maybe you'll see it at convention! It's purple!

I also have a few rectangular tins that I use too.

Anita Hansen who spend the day working on bobbin rolls for the
Arachne lunch which will be on Tuesday during the convention. See you there!

Re: [lace] Bobbin storage

2015-06-26 Thread lacel...@frontier.com
After years of putting bobbins in small cabinets with little drawers, plastic
shoe boxes, and even plastic bags, I decided I needed something better.
I bought a vertical cabinet with seven drawers.  Midlands went in the top
drawer, and continentals were sorted by size and style into the other
drawers.  A style with only a few were bundled with elastic bands.  Large
quantities were loose in a drawer.  One drawer is just the odd bobbins that
don't match any set.  (It's surprising how many odd bobbins I have
accumulated.)

This cabinet works quite well  -- as long as I have several projects in
process on the shelf!!  It I stripped all my pillows, these drawers would not
hold them.  I think I may need a second cabinet.
After ending some projects recently, my midlands drawer was over-full.  I had
to put the bobbins neatly in plastic baggies so they could lie flat and
straight before they would fit.  I'm still missing a bunch of my favorite
midlands, so I'm sure there's a project or two on my shelf with midlands.  (I
have enough to do Miss Channers mat, so that project is on my list to do next
year.)

I bought a similar cabinet for my lace tools and threads.  It was amazing how
many thread spools I have now that they are collected into one place.  I
sorted the cotton, linen and other threads.  Now it's easier to 'shop' for
thread for a project.  ( I wish I had inventoried them before going to lace
conference.  I managed to buy duplicate spools of some sizes of thread.)
When I started lacemaking, I never dreamed I would acquire this many pillows,
bobbins, etc. Storage of supplies can indeed be a challenge.
Alice in Oregon -- in the middle of a record-setting heat wave.  PNW Lace
Conference went very well.  Now I can rest up.
