Me, too, Loreleiabout 1972/3, we first made contact. Such a sharing and
loving person. She taught me more than lace. I knew when I heard her sons
voice that the inevitable had happened. She was a wonderful friend, as well
as mentor

For those who might not know either of these ladies, or who might want to be
reminded of their skill, I do have some photos on my website.
On my website I do have many photos of Doris' Tonder bobbin lace. She came to
Chicago twice to give workshops for our local guild and stayed with me. This

Thank you for telling us the news about Doris Southard's passing. She was a
very fine lady, generous, good natured and always helpful. I have held her in
great reverence ever since I had first contact with her back in 1973. She has
given so much to the world. Her life was a gift.

I am also one of Doris Southard’s many grateful students. My mother
gave me my first lesson in bobbin lace in 1974. My parents were
visiting us in Indiana from Denmark. She sent a Danish beginner’s book
which I struggled through. After Doris’ book came out I started
working through that, and
Lyn in Lancaster PA asked:
How many of her (Doris Southard's) students are on Arachne?
Hi All,
I began with Doris Southard's book also and worked to about the middle of
the book and then switched to Judith Markham's on-line Torchon Beginners
class.
I also have a soft place in my heart for my
Count me in as another of Doris's remote students! I wanted to make
proper lace to go on my 15th century costumes and once I figured out that
bobbin lace was one of the correct forms, it was Doris Southard's book
that I wound up with. I think it was in the beginning kit I ordered from

I agree with everything Lyn says about Doris. I have a profound reverence
for her. She was so generous and helpful, beyond just writing the book.
She invited me to visit her a few times and we talked lace all day for
several days. As far as I am concerned, she is the Great Lady of American
I do hope that Doris is out there reading all these lovely comments about her.
I'm sure she is touched.
My first encounter with bobbin lace occurred in the early 1980's. My husband
and I went to a local festival in October. There sitting on the ground was a
woman demonstrating bobbin lace. I'm
I remember when Doris celebrated her 80th - birthday (I *think* that was
the auspicious number!). Someone on Arachne suggested that we send her
birthday cards, and she was innundated by them!! I sent her one. She
wrote to the list about how thrilled she had been to have so many people

This afternoon Sally Olsen and I had a very pleasant visit with Doris

Doris will celebrate her 90th birthday! We brought our various goodies

Dear friends,
On hearing the sad news on here of Doris' husband, I do have her address at
