[lace] Miss Channers Mat
I have a pristine copy of this Floral Bucks pattern, and I’m considering selling it as my interests have veered to Binche. I have absolutely no idea how much is reasonable to ask for it. I honestly don’t recall what I paid for it. And I don’t know where to post it. Can I get some ideas from you wise lacemakers? Please feel free to contact me personally if this isn’t an appropriate topic for the group. [lace] Miss Channers mat -- Error in Pricking
If you have a copy of Miss Channers Mat pattern, you may want to take note of the error I found. The person who make the original sample found it and corrected for it, but the correction was not put on the pattern. Find the center of the pattern. On four sides of the center, there is a stylized flower. It's has two ovals in the center with tallies on them. The center is surrounded by two curving sets of petals. The inside petals curve around the center part until they almost meet. On one of the flowers, these petals have been run together in a arch. You may want to draw in the ends of the petals for future use. Update on progress -- I am now halfway through the pattern. I have just used up the 235 pre-wound pairs of bobbins. Plus I have tied together many of the cut0off pairs, rolled the knot back on a bobbin, and re-used the bobbins.   I'll be doing that through the rest of the pattern when I want to thicken a clothstitch section. I like a solid leaf or petal so I add in lots of extras, and throw them out when I get to a ground section. The past couple weeks I have had a problem with threads breaking. It was frustrating to have one beak near the end of a tally. I took it out, installed a new pair, and then halfway through, another thread broke. Repeat the previous work. Third try worked. I was really glad to complete that batch of tallies. The bobbins have been wound for over a year. When they started to break, I gave them a moisture treatment. It helped a little but I'm still breaking threads. I've had other patterns on a pillow for much longer than this one, with no thread problems. Maybe it's because it's a very fine thread. Alice in Oregon -- on a very wet day. Trees are starting to bloom but it's still cool outside. I look forward to sunshine and warm temps. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Miss Channer was born c1874 at Sherford in Devon, died on the 10th of March 1949 and was buried at Clapham, Bedford where she had lived for some years. I have a very poor quality, much reduced, photocopy of the pattern which has a couple of hand written notes one of which is 'W. Dean 1978' - West Dean, Somerset I believe, where lace making was taught for many years. I had added a note that I acquired it from Alby Lace Museum, Norfolk - which is no more. The main part of the collection at Alby was previously the property of Pat Payne. That early copy doesn't have the half stitch and overlaid leaves as per the later copy. Those areas are ground with tallies and honeycomb. On a slightly more recent copy (pre the Bean/Bury publication), which I think must have come from the Vi Bullard archive, those half stitch areas are blanked out. There are other slight alterations so obviously the mat as we know it has changed through the years, and there is probably more than one version. Great work David. Congratulations. All those bobbins on your pillow, WOW. And I groan when I have 75 pairs on my pillow. Guess I'll never get around to making such a big project. Wonderful Work. Re: [lace] Miss Channers Mat
Learning to manage bobbins is one of the joys of lacemaking! I found that when lots of bobbins are required, a larger pillow is definitely advantageous. A 24 pillow gives you lots of room to work, with plenty of space to stack bobbins out of the way. So... never say never... just get a bigger pillow!! ; ) Clay Miriam wrote: Great work David.
