Re: [lace] PieceWork, July-August 2017 - An International Selection

2017-06-19 Thread Katrina Worley
The problem with Zinio is that they use their own format, and with Interweave
Press publications it’s hit-and-miss as to whether or not you can easily
print pages or save an archive PDF file. Several years ago Zinio had an issue
with their server where magazines couldn’t be accessed for something like
two weeks, and unless you had them downloaded locally you couldn’t get at
them. As a result, I don’t completely trust Zinio. Having said that, I do
have to admit that my PieceWork subscription is through Zinio (the
subscription price is often lower through Zinio than directly from
Interweave). I end having to go through some rather convoluted processes to
save the files from the Zinio Reader to a standard PDF so that I can archive
them and access the files from outside of the Zinio reader application. Other
publications (Handwoven and Spin-Off, in particular) have things set in a way
that it takes a slightly different process to save them from Zinio. Why this
can’t be standard even within one publisher’s offerings is something I
simply don’t understand. So yeah- Zinio is a really convenient way of
accessing digital magazines, but like Amazon’s Kindle or Barnes and
Noble’s nook formats, they really want to lock you into their apps/devices
for accessing the content. When it works, it’s great. When it doesn’t, it
can quickly become frustrating.

If the print copies of the issue are not available, Interweave does have
digital versions of their publications. Here’s the direct link to the
specific issue Jeri is referring to…

https://www.interweave.com/store/piecework-july-august-2017-digital-edition

PieceWork is the one needlework publication that I have EVERY issue of. I
started my subscription with the first issue, and switched to digital as soon
as they made that option available. I even bought the entire back library in
digital version so that I could have an archive on my hard drive while
clearing out the print copies from my workroom. Most of the time I read it on
my iPad, but if I need to print out pages (for instance if there’s a chart
or pattern that I want to stick in my workbag), I print out just the pages
needed and don’t feel bad about making notes on them (I’m one of those who
can’t bring myself to write in books).

2012-05-01 Thread Diane Williams
I especially loved the Bucks Point pattern in the magazine because it mentions
in the article that a similar design shows up in Downton lace but with a
different ground (honeycomb instead of point ground) and Downton is one of my
favorite laces.  I definitely have that on my wish list once I finish my
bookmark for the exchange.  I found the article about Margaretenspitze
wonderful even if the accompanying project was not terribly intriguing to me.
I am even a little bit tempted to pick up a crochet hook and try the Clones
crochet.  Piecework continues to inspire and I've been a subscriber for many
years.

Recently I've fallen in love with Romanian Point lace and Piecework
featured an RPL butterfly in their January 2001 issue.  It's one year that's
missing from my collection so I purchased the digital download of the whole
year from Interweave.  I loaded it on my nook and can look at the magazines no
matter where I'm at.  I'll never give up the paper issues, but having the
digital version always with me is pretty sweet.

I have always found Piecework inspiring. I subscribe and can't seem to find
a reason to stop since every issue is full of something that I can do or get
excited about. I also go crazy for the single special issues Traditions
for knitting (3 or 4 issues already out) and Traditions for crochet which
covers tons of crocheted lace. Knitted, crocheted, bobbin and needle laces
of all kinds are always popping up in Piecework magazine, even when it is
not the Spring Lace issue. I must admit, however, I really do wait
impatiently every year for the lace issues.
Bucks Point is my favourite type of lace so very thrilled with the nice
pattern in this spring's issue.

Hi Sherry
I agree that the lace issue is worth having!
BTW, The Wedding dress was not Carrickmacross lace, but the Carrickmacross
technique of appliqué was used to transfer the machine made motifs in the
lace to the tulle of the dress.

I thought I would let you all know with the talk of the Royal Wedding
dress
(which I didn't think the lace looked like Carrickmacross to me) bring me to
the May/June issue of Piecework magazine
Years ago I took a lace
class of Carrickmacross Lace with Mary Shields in Ithaca, N.Y.
After
that class Mary had said she would love to have a lace bobbin painted by me.
In exchange she said she would design a Carrickmacross pattern for me that I
could use to make a pin. Imagine my surprise when I got a pattern in the
mail
along with the material I needed to finish it along with fan sticks to frame
my lace into and make a pin. Since seeing the article in the magazine it is
making me think of making that pin. There is the letter S in the middle
for
my first name.

This email was intended to share with you all
about the Carrickmacross lace that was featured in Piecework magazine.

  Dear Lacemakers, Collectors, Researchers,

In the U.S., we have been waiting for this issue to come. It is now in
  mailboxes, and possibly in stores.

  Table of Contents are:

  1. How Did They Do That? (Double half stitch - macrame? Cavandoli?)
  Includes brief illustrated instructions.

  2. Russian Lace Scarf to Knit by Galina A. Khmeleva (picture on cover of
  magazine). With instructions.

  3. Doily to Filet Crochet based on a Mary Card pattern. With
instructions.

  4. Nicolaides Shuttles a Ruffled Edging to Tat by Mary Nicolaides. With
instructions. Collectors: If you have old shuttles with two posts, read
this.

  5. Esther Oldham: Collector of Fans and Lace Extraordinaire (Collection of
  the Wellesley Massachusetts Historical Society).
  _www.wellesleyhistoricalsociety.org_
(http://www.wellesleyhistoricalsociety.org) The best of Oldham's
fan collection was donated to Museum of Fine Arts - Boston. All the rest
was
donated to historical society, which is raising funds to conserve this lace
collection (photos of laces laid on construction paper with plastic cover
sheets gives confirmation as to need for conservation). Researchers,
please take
note of this collection and two locations..

  6. Lace Fan to Knit instructions Knitted Lace Fans by Deborah Robinson of
U.K. Article has interesting commentary on fan sticks.

  7. Many Lives of Old Lace article by Elizabeth Kurella and a simple Lace
Bridal Purse to Make (uses old handkerchief corner) by Suzanne Rosser.
With
  instructions.

  8. Lace Socks to Knit by Ann Budd. With instructions.

  9. Lacemaking in Ipswich Massachusetts article by Karen H. Thompson. With
  pricking and instructions.

On the Web (not in magazine) PieceWork has added 2 entries. I recommend
PieceWork site for many free patterns:

  1. Buttons to Embroider and Needle-Tat by Christen Brown. Suggest you copy
and put with information you have about lace buttons.
  pieceworkmagazine.com/go/projects/embroideredtattedbuttons.asp

  2. Textile Travels: Part I by Gwen Blakley Kinsler, founder of Crochet
Guild
of America - textile treasures collected in Honduras and Guatemala. I
copied and placed in Arachnid Angela Thompson's 2006 book Textiles of
Central and
South America. More to come in future months.

Thank you everyone for web addresses and suggestion I take out a

Before I do that, though, I will try to find the email address of a UK firm

You could still get a subscription to PW. Book and magazine sellers have never
carried PW in Israel, so I've subscribed since issue 10, years ago.
Occasionally, I've thought of dropping the subscription because the magazine has
become thinner and (to my mind) somewhat superficial, but every now and then a
really good article comes along.

Best wishes,

Avital

My thanks to all who replied in answer to my query. Today was the first that
I was able to return to my newsagent. The very efficient lady phoned the

It seems to be $22 for 6 issues and the postage to international
destinations seems quite reasonable at $10/year.

2005-11-10 Thread Linda Bill Mitchell

Diane Williams wrote:

Evidently it's very expensive,
US$60 per ounce. It sounds like an illegal substance!

Yes! It is very, very expensive! The reason being, even the Inuit people
don't shear the animals, they gather the bits the musk oxen shed on the
tundra. Although they are really cute animals, they aren't very nice and
don't take to domestication. Several years agp I had the opportunity to
obtain some quiviut blended with tussah silk. Words fail me! Spinning it
was like holding a handful of whipped cream! I think I got it in the late
80's/early 90's at $65.00 US per ounce then. Those who know me know that I
can't resist spinning fiber and the more lucious the better! (I have enough
to open a store) and those who know me know I have a big mouth and
occasionally tend to put my foot right into it. So one day I was with a
lace making friend who knits Shetland lace shawls. I quote Gee, I should
give you some of my handspun and have you knit me a shawl! Next time I was
at her house, she plopped a pile of books in my lap and said, Pick your
pattern! So I gave her several choices, she chose Mediterranean Lace on
page 63 of A Gathering of Lace. Whit Beryl's skill, it turned out
incredible! If you were at the Northwest Lace Conference in Victoria, BC a
couple of years ago, you would have seen it. It's like wearing a cloud!

Urged to insure it, DH and were talking about one evening and came up with a
value of at least $5000. Counting the cost of the fiber, my spinning time
(maybe 200 hours) and Beryl's knitting time (maybe 300 hours), that's not
unreasonable. Of course, no insurance company would pay out that much!
They would cover the cost of the fiber, if I could find the receipt!

So, that's my quiviut story!

Linda, the string-a-holic in Oregon where we've had just short of 12 on
rain since October 1 so I'm knitting lace with handspun.
