I'm wondering if the P.C. Northerners are associating this innocent phrase with sold down the river which may be Politically Incorrect as it refers to a practice in time of slavery in U.S. A. when rebellious slaves might be sold to brokers who supplied workers for plantations in the deep South.

Hi everyone Hold on, back up - please explain? First of all: what means went South (like 'took off on vacation with the money?')and why unPolitically Correct? Unfortunately, the publisher went South several years ago I have heard and used this expression for as long as I can remember.

Hi Bev - Went south is an expression used to describe a failure, such as the stock market went south. And when my sister (who hails from Atlanta, GA) asked why it was un-PC, she was told that it was a slur against Southerners. I think it's a good example of over-reaction! Clay Hi everyone

Hi Clay and everyone Thankyou for the explanation. I was wondering about 'going south' = 'failure' . We have an expression 'deked' as in leaving quickly from someplace. The stocks were falling fast so s/he deked (it's also an ice hockey term, to fake a move). ..where was I... Gone south also
