2016-10-16 Thread Clay Blackwell
A couple of years ago, I had a TBI (traumatic brain injury) which affected my
memory. I am still dealing with memory issues, but my Neurologist strongly
recommended eye-hand activities, and was delighted to know I am a lacemaker.
The quality of my lace suffered in the beginning, and I had to work less
complex lace for a while, but I am now working my favorite Binche again and am
happy with the results!

I have heard of it Kim,

I am currently trialing a new therapy/drug regime, it seems to be helping. Only
problem is the side effects.

I have found that doing bobbin lace is very therapeutic. The movements repeat
themselves, which is wonderful for OCD.

Have you heard of EMDR therapy before? it is an interesting thing, and I
was once reading an article about how things such as bobbin lace can mimic it.
I can
not recall where I read it, or I would share that with you. If it comes to me
I will be sure to post. In any case, the idea is that because you are working
with both your left and right hands, it engages both sides of the brain and is
helpful in getting the emotional side to talk to the logical side. Thankfully
the anxiety I have experienced in my life has been mild, but I will say that I
noticed long ago that both bobbin lace and braiding have a very meditative
quality for me. I think the symmetrical work is very soothing.

Have fun with your lace!

Kim

Welcome. Are you aware of Jo Edkins' website? She has many torchon bobbin lace
patterns, with animated stitches and lots of explanation.

Joseph,
Welcome to the group. If you understand how to wind the bobbins, CT, CTC and
CTCT you have a great start. Now it is just a matter of lots of practice.
It's amazing to me the variety of laces that are made with just those simple
steps. I will look forward to seeing your samples as you work through them.

Welcome, Joseph. We are a very varied group of lacemakers - in many
different countries around the world - some of us have been making lace for
many years and others are quite new to the craft. Some make bobbin lace,
others needle lace or tatting or knitted or crocheted lace, and so on.

You might want to look at the photos on our Flickr site to see the diversity
of the lace we make too! See the last line of the Arachne info at the
bottom of this email.

wonderful mentor that helps me to understand things, I contact her via
emails.

My local lace group is 3 hours drive away.

As for how my learning is going:

I have mastered CT, CTC, CTCT, Torchon edge. I understand how to wind
my bobbins.

I am tackling Torchon ground at the moment. My pillow is only 12" square
at the moment. I am working on covering the blocks for a much larger
block pillow. I have 25 blocks to cover.

Welcome Joseph.

You will see that bobbin lace is a really good craft to fight against
anxiety, as it keeps you so busy and concentrated while working it! And
there is always a lot to learn. This group will surely be of great help to
you!
