LL:DDV: An informal introduction to the DSP

2000-08-24 Thread MelbourneGreenLeft

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE
DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST PARTY (www.dsp.org.au)
(aka the "everything you ever wanted to know about the DSP but were to
afraid to ask" meeting)

AUGUST 31, THURSDAY 7PM
to book call marcel or arun on (03) 9639 8622

The Democratic Socialist Party has grown into the largest socialist
organisation in Australia, with branches in every capital city and several
regional centres. We are an activist based organisation committed to helping
empower people by building grass roots alternatives to the politics of
global capital.

Our members are involved in trade union struggles for better rights
conditions and in many social and environmental campaigns. Along with the
socialist youth organisation RESISTANCE (www.resistance.org.au), we
initiated and help campaign with the national newspaper GREEN LEFT WEEKLY
(www.greenleft.org.au) to help network and build a range of struggles.

Some of our key campaigns have involved international solidarity,
particularly with progressive movements in the Asia Pacific region
(supporting groups such as Asiet www.asiet.org.au); helping to build an
ongoing and vibrant women's liberation movement through such events as
International Women's Day or Reclaim the Night (coming soon); building a
socially just environmental movement; and fighting racism against migrants
and Indigenous people.

We understand that fighting for reforms today is essential in both winning a
better world for working people and developing the confidence and
organisation of our class. But as Marxists we are ultimately fighting for a
radical change to the capitalist system that relies on the institutional
oppression and poverty of so many. We are fighting for a democratic
socialist system that will put the needs of people before profit.

Interested in finding out more? You are invited to this informal
introduction to the politics, organisation campaigns of the DSP. The
evening will consist of a very short presentation before we throw it open
for your questions.
7pm Thursday, Aug 31. Call Arun or Marce to book 9639 8622.

 A Public Lecture
-
One of the most honoured men in modern history - Nelson Mandela - is coming
to Australia.

It continues to astound the world that a young boy growing up in poverty,
with illiterate parents, became one of the greatest political leaders in
the world.

Mandela, surviving apartheid and 28 years jail, is considered by many as a
truly great man with a moral authority that invokes awe and respect
everywhere he goes.

Hear him on this week's Background Briefing in a presentation he recently
gave at the London School of Economics, where he was awarded an honorary
degree (one of his hundreds).

The Adzido Pan African Dance Troupe and Joan Armatrading were there to
welcome him...

LL:PR: Governor General Accepts Invitation from Peace Walk

2000-08-24 Thread Keepers of Lake Eyre

Walking the Land- for Our Ancient Right
For Peace and Healing

Camped at the Canberra Aboriginal Tent Embassy,
in front of Old Parliament House.

Media Release
24 August, 2000

Governor General Accepts Invitation
to Join Peace Walk to Sydney Olympics

Walking the Land For Our Ancient Right, for Peace and Healing is in
Canberra on
its way to blessing the Sydney Olympic Games. Walk leader, peacemaker and
Arabunna elder, Kevin Buzzacott, has come carrying the Sacred Fire for
Peace, all
the way from his people's country at Lake Eyre, in South Australia's north.

Many people from Around Australia and the world, from many nations and
cultures, have supported Kevin on this epic 2700km journey, which is
destined to
become a part of Australia's heritage.

Yesterday, August 23, a very sacred fire ceremony was held with the elders
of the
Aboriginal Embassy and the Sacred Runners, who arrived after running around
the
eastern half of Australia with their message of peace.

Fire sticks surrounded the Fire for Peace, carried by Uncle Kevin from Lake
Eyre,
each burning in the fire at one end. After a blessing and cleansing of smoke
everyone was invited to share by carrying a fire stick to the Justice Fire,
which has
been burning at the Tent Embassy for some years. Ashes from the Justice Fire,
carried around Australia by the Sacred Runners were also added.

Today, at 11am, Kevin and his supporters went to Government House and
presented Sir William Deane, the Governor General of Australia and the Queen's
representative, with a personal invitation to join this journey for Peace
and Healing,
to share in our message to the whole world, to be presented along the way
of the
Walk and at the Olympic Games. He was asked to direct this invitation to the
Queen. Neil Crocker, of Protective Services accepted the invitation on
behalf of the
Governor General and placed wood on the Peace Fire to symbolise the Governor's
blessing to the Walk and its message of peace and healing for all the
peoples of the
world.

"Everyone is invited to share in our message of Peace for all peoples and all
cultures, for the future of the world. We want to share this with the
world, to start
the healing." Said Kevin today

Many Canberra locals, and people from further away are arriving at the
Embassy to
offer their support and to join the walk.

"We are walking in the right way, with respect for this land and its
people. We are
calling for safe passage to Sydney and invite all people to
participate. Join us to
learn about this land, its people and each other, together we can make
peace and
travel this country together." Says Kevin.

Walking the Land- for Our Ancient Right, for Peace and Healing, will leave
Canberra for Sydney on the morning of Saturday August 26. Fire from the
Sacred
Justice Fire will be ceremonially joined again with the Sacred Peace Fire
before it is
carried on to Sydney where it will bless the Olympic Games and athletes and
offer
its message of peace to the world.

Western Australia Parks Proposal Condemned
It's not often that the announcement of new National Parks and Conservation
Reserves is met with such disappointment. West Australian Premier Richard
Court made the announcement to convert some 540,000 hectares in to 2
National Parks and 3 Conservation Reserves. The proposal has been widely
condemned, primarily because it blatantly fails to respect and involve the
aboriginal traditional owners.=20

Premier Richard Court has labelled those opposing the parks proposal as
following a political agenda. Maria Mann is from Environs Kimberley, a
local environment group based in Broome, and she rejects the Premier's
accusation saying that it's simply about good conservation and opposing a
cynical exercise in trying to win green credential. Here Maria Mann begins
by describing the land now proposed for conservation.
