   Mayday ( May 1st 2001 )

CALL FOR DIRECT ACTION RESISTANCE TO CAPITALISM

Mayday ( May 1st ) is a day to celebrate working class
solidarity and resistance to Capitalism. In keeping
with this tradition AWOL ( Autonomous Web of
Liberation ) is calling for an anti-capitalist,
anti-authoritarian day of action.

AWOL is working towards an action around the idea
of 'Liberate the Streets ' in the City of Melbourne.
  We are calling on all
anti-capitalist groups and individuals who believe in
consensus decision making, direct action and who
organise on the basis of non-hierachy ( autonomous
from all centralisation and bureacracy ), to
co-ordinate with us for this action.

We are also calling on you to organise your own
actions, affinity groups, clusters, net-works and
co-ordinations against Capitalism on Mayday.

M A Y D A Y M A Y D A Y M A Y D A Y

Mayday , May 1st is a day of anti-capitalist action
and to remember and take inspiration from those who
have fought before us. To fight back against bosses
and Capitalists at work
and in the unions and those who try to control our
lives. Mayday incorporates the struggles of all
oppressed peoples, resistance to police corruption and
surveilance, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly
and for radical egalitarian futures.

It is a time to remember struggles like the workers
struggle for the 8 hour day in Chicago, USA, 1886. The
demonstration was attacked by 176 armed police, a bomb
thrown by unknown persons, resulted in open fire on
the crowd, killing 4 workers and some of their own
officers.

8 Anarchists were framed for this attack, a number not
even beign in attendance at the time of attack,
'Anarchy was on trial. ' These events and the
recognition of brave struggles against bosses and
bureacrates and capitalists are a reminder of what the
state and capitalists do to us everyday, and why it is
important to resist on Mayday, bring struggles
together and always fight back.

L I B E R A T ET H ES T R E E T S

We hope to occupy and liberate a piece of land, to
create a commons for community celebration, a world
turned upside down, a glimpse of freedom and
ecological survival. A place to share our dreams and
visions, an example of a world of respect for
diversity and acceptance of difference, direct
democracy and community control of resources, free
from the tyranny of money, bosses and leaders.

LL:PR: Iraqi sanctions miss target say distinguished Australians

2001-01-16 Thread Clare Henderson

MEDICAL ASSOCIATION for PREVENTION of WAR (Australia)
Media Release

17 January 2001

Iraqi sanctions miss target say distinguished Australians

Forty-three distinguished Australians have written to Prime Minister John
Howard and the Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer calling for
their support for the lifting of economic sanctions against Iraq.

The letter states: "After a decade of suffering by innocent people, and the
deaths of children on a scale far exceeding that caused by any military
weapon in history, the sanctions continue to bring misery and degradation to
all sectors of Iraqi society except their target, the Iraqi government".

Signatories to the letter include former Prime Minister and current chairman
of CARE Australia, Malcolm Fraser, over a dozen Church leaders, six medical
professors, several distinguished members of the legal profession and
prominent individuals such as Major-General Sir William Refshauge AC, CBE,
ED (ret'd) and former Human Rights Commissioner Chris Sidoti.

Wednesday 17 January 2001 marks the tenth anniversary of the commencement
of the Gulf War. After the war finished in April 1991, economic sanctions
were kept in place in an attempt to ensure the elimination of Iraq's weapons
of mass destruction. Ten years later, while the vast bulk of Iraq's weapons
have been eliminated by United Nations inspection teams, the sanctions have
not been effective in securing Iraqi government compliance with further
inspections. Meanwhile, the people of Iraq bear the ongoing impact of the
sanctions.

The letter notes that the scale of the tragedy is not questioned by any
humanitarian agency and says: "It is time for a change of direction. In
particular it is time to allow the people of Iraq to re-build their society,
to create a future for their children, and to engage with the international
community. Economic sanctions should be lifted, but strict sanctions on
military materials must remain."

It concludes with a call to the Australian Government to "review Australia's
policy towards Iraq so that it properly reflects our common aspirations for
peace with justice for all people, including the people of Iraq".

The Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW) initiated the letter as
part of its ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the devastating impact of
economic sanctions on the ordinary people of Iraq. Dr Susan Wareham MAPW
National President was part of an international delegation to Iraq in 1999.
She says: "The sanctions against Iraq have brought death to hundreds of
thousands of children, and misery and despair to a whole generation of
innocent people. We are seeking an end to Australian government support for
this morally bankrupt policy."

LL:INFO: suwa show: eat timor and free koori flags

2001-01-16 Thread henrietta question mark

EAST TIMOR
this friday the squatters and unwaged airwaves (suwa) show (11am- noon on
3cr) will be featuring a lengthy interview with a technician from the east
timor community computer project. rowan has recently returned from timor
and will be discussing conditions in timor and the continuing struggles of
ordinary people there for justice and a decent standard of living. He will
also discuss the state of the project which is aiming to both establish a
community run and owned computer centre for education and to continue
providing NGOs, schools and others with free computers and training.

FREE KOORI AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER FLAGS
the suwa show would also like to remind people that all australian citizens
(and anyone who wants to claim they are one) are entitled to one free koori
and one free torres strait islander flag from their local federal member of
parliament. so look them up in the phone book, give them a call, get your
flags and then fly them on january 26th, invasion day.

p.s.- you can also get an australian flag should you wish to save one for
later burning or desecration.
