First, Thanks for the information. Great Job, @ questions.
1) I assume the splines do not have to be parallel to each other just
on opposite sides of the break and overlaping the break.
2) I would be very interested in how you re-colored the wood.

Dang hit the enter key and sent the darn note before I was done.
On 2nd question, How did you match the color what was the process and
how do you get the colors not to overlap the old that is already
there.

Sorry about the multiple post, After the mistake in the first one I
reloaded the page to see if it was sent, it must of acted like a enter
on the send key and then I repeated the problem on the second when i
figured out I did not send the whole note.

Hello Greg
Im at work now, When I get home I can take a few more pictures and show you the
match of colors much better.
Basicly I like to use dyes and shelak to match the colors, The dyes can be
lightened or darkened easly to get a better match, with a damp rag and some
elbo grease, Once I get
Bill,
Thanks for sharing your work. I enjoyed the ornament and also the pen. Both
were motivational. I am trying to get some shop time before Christmas to
make a couple of beds for my girls. If I can get them done, I will share
them with the group as well.
Thanks,
Grant

Hello All,
Is it a safe bet to say that most of us that own a Legacy also own a
traditional lathe? I want to hear from the exceptions to the rule to figure
out if it is safe to add a lathe requirement to a few projects that I would
like to show here.

We inherited a old craftsman lathe along with just about everything
else in our little shop. I feel more comfortable on the mill as I try
to draw my projects before I start and new to woodworking it add's a
level of confidence . On the other hand I look to people like Dr

I have both the legacy and an older rockwell lathe. I have only turned a few
items so far on the lathe, but it looks like a lot of fun, and is more free
form for many things, not requiring as much deliberative thought as the
legacy.

Hi Cole,
It's good to hear from you. You're right about the legacy being a great
security blanket. You can do some amazing cuts with router bits that take
some time to learn how to do properly on a lathe. For example the
Provincial Plunge bit #3674 is a real pain to learn how to do right on
Hello
I am sorry no pictures tonight.
I did not know that my wife had other plans for the evening.
Perhaps tomorrow.

Hi Bill,
Some modifications are really ahead of their times with a lot to fully take in.
It's taken me a while to realize by lowering the spindle like you did in this
write up, http://ornamentalmills.com/Bill_Bulkeley/side_cutting_mod.html ,
that you also increased the diameter that you can
Yes Tim you are correct I can turn larger diameters also the larger pitches
that the legacy 4X gear gives.. the larger dia work is better held in a chuck.
which screws on like it does on the 900s standard spindle. I haven't had that
set up in a while I have not had the need for a large job
No one is gonna hold up projects. Whatever inspiration you have is welcome .
That is how we learn from others. Personally , I have a hard time telling you
which I enjoy more learning or passing that skill forward. It's like climbing a
mountain that you didn't know you'd ever climb or seeing
I use my lathe mainly for sanding legacy work. its just easyer and quicker some
times to drop it in the lathe to sand usually with the index hub in the tail
stock live center and the tail stock end in the lathes drive center. i can
drive it fast to sand with paper in hand or slower to sand with
Hi Cole,
Wanna bet? Maybe I simply think too much, but there are a lot of woodturners
that don't understand what a legacy can do and don't accept items that where
turned on a legacy as true skill. We all know it takes skill to run the Legacy
and it's a thinking mans machine. So, I have as
Hi Tim,
This is my first comm to the group but just to let you know that I have
recently completed a project that is a candlestand as used by Martha
Washington from the Norm Abrams collection. I used the lathe to turn the
centre column but then transferred it to the legacy to manufacture the
We also own a traditional lathe.

Hello Ron
I hope this question was not just for Tim?
As for my self, I made a gear hub for my lathe the fits the Legacy drive
centers, I have tried to always make sure that everything I have is universal,
Meaning that all my equipment fit on both my lathe as well as the Legacy.that
way I can
Hi Ron,
Not mundane at all. Really starting from the basics, when I start a turning
project I mark the center of the stock on each end with pencil lines to find
the center. I then take an automatic punch and put dents in the center on both
ends. This gives me a center reference. When I
Well Hello Greg and Diane. I don't recall seeing your names before so
welcome to the group. What kind of work do you folks do with you legacy or
on your lathe?
