also like to keep track of where I get pictures from and other

Actually, you create a source which describes and
contains the photo. Then you can attach same photo or
the source carrying the photo to the person. I used
photo instead of Media File, becuse that's what I do
most of.

When you Import a Gedcom, you'll get a screen asking whether you want
to add it to the family file that is open or to a new family file.
Importing to a new family file is the default and recommended.
When the file is cleaned up to your standards of data entry, then
import this new Legacy file

FDB - the main Family File.

Open Legacy and start a new family file. Then Import your gedcom into
it. You cannot mix it up with your other one unless you import it into
that one. When you want to join the two you can use Split Screen or
import one Legacy file into the other and then use the Merge function.

one database is saved in many, many separate pieces

leave it switched on - it reverts to stand-by pretty quickly anyway. I
do find sometimes that it gets 'tired' as it were and I then have to
switch off and reboot in any case.
