Hello Joyce
What Leon has said makes good sense and may make life easier in the
future. Don't forget, after coping files from one pc to another, you
can make some 'adjustments' if need be by going to Options - Customise
- Locations. You'll see the default locations noted there, 4 pathways
Leon,
I am not sure what you are suggesting here. Joyce has all her pictures in
folders in the C Drive, or in their sub folders. This is fine and will work
without problem on any machine or o/s.
If I was Joyce I would just copy the lot, as they stand, across to the C Drive
of the second
For clarity, I should have said in my second paragraph that the multimedia
backup should be used and the settings from the first installation should also
be carried across.

Ron:
You are correct and that is one way she can do it - by recreating the same
folder / sub folder / file structure on both machines. A copy from machine
A to machine B will do that. A new install of Legacy on the new machine
will be required. Any user settings will be back to the initial set
Ron:
Given the way Joyce described her photo file structure, I assume with her
400 or so pictures that she would have maybe 10 pictures per family and thus
a total of about 40 directories that she must replicate on the new machine.
The same is true for backups - 40 subdirectories. My 2nd
Leon,
As I read Joyce's original request she was asking whether she could keep her
orginal structure, and with 400 photos I don't blame her, to which the answer
is yes because all her photo files are in the 'C' directory.
The paths to the photos are in the .fdb file which as you correctly
At least we have covered the options! Over to you, Joyce :-)

Hi
I have an old version of TreeDraw (1.21a). Does anyone know how to convert
its proprietary tdr file format into something else that I can use with
other graphic programs? (My current favorite is Family Tree Super Tools).

Legacy User Group guidelines:
Hi Joyce,
In your system how do you file photos with more than 1 person? Say a
group photo with cousins and in-laws?
Thanks,

Dear Brian,
I make one group photo file for each surname. I always start
them with A so it will appear at the top of the surname
file. For example: The top file will be McElroy, then
subfiles named A-McElroy-group, Ann, Betty, Carol, Debbie, etc.
There will be different surnames among the

Hi Joyce,
I have another system that began much like I understand yours tp be. I scan or
otherwise digitally capture everything that crosses my path, that's related to
my family history. I have just over 7,276 images across 51families. The
catalog is an Excel spreadsheet and the images are

Judy,
The first thing I would do is determine whether the problem is with the
Generations export or the Legacy import. You can do this by examining the
GEDCOM file, either in Notepad or by using a freeware GEDCOM viewer program.
With Notepad, you will have to do some detective work in figuring
I should have noted that if you really do want to fix this by editing the
results within Legacy, there is a checkbox under the text and comment fields
that allows that text to appear in citations. You wouldn't have to copy
anything -- just check the box if appropriate.

Joyce,
I too am wrestling with the best organization for calling files.
Could you clarify your ideas a bit more? They sound intriguing.
Do you make separate files for each surname or do you have one file
with all images, clippings, documents, etc. divided by A-surname
groups? You could
Judy,
I too imported a gedcom from Generations to Legacy. I had the same problem
that you are experiencing -- many of the sources just said source.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Sherry, I am going to try yours first,

about...whereas I am not familiar yet with Legacy.
I did use a lot of free form sources in Generations, particularly the

Mary Jo,
It is very easy to reset the columns in the Index view to the defaults.
In index view click on options and select customize columns
To reset the list to the defaults click on the defaults button.
If you want the ability to switch back to your custom list of columns
click on the save
From the MRIN List select MRIN 780 which is, I presume, the extra
marriage you want to remove. Right Click in the marriage info box under
the husband and wife and select remove the marriage link. That will
delete MRIN 780 and leave only MRIN 2 as their marriage.
