Thanks to all who replied to my query. A special thanks to Brian and JLB for
pointing me to the Legacy Merge function which worked just fine for me, even
though I still cannot figure out how I created so many duplicate families.
Anyway, thanks again - problem solved.

Go to Tools Merge Find Duplicates.
You can have Legacy search for and Identify possible duplicates in your
file.
We have an enhancement recorded to add the ability to suggest that a new
record is a possible duplicate but it is not implemented yet.

Somehow, I find I have have several duplicates of Family files entered in
Legacy. What is the proper way to identify and delete the extras?

First of all, I don't understand what you mean by 'duplicates of Family
files'. Does this mean (based on your following paragraph) 'duplicated
information'? Technically, Family File is something else.
Assuming you're talking about duplicate information, Legacy does not
throw up a warning when

Legacy User Group guidelines:
This answer is sort of OT but your 1st message did come through to the group
on May 28. Another great thing about gmail is that I could just do a search
for messages from you. You will not get your messages back to you on Gmail,
just as Jenny said. So a good thing to do is search the archives to
