that each household member was given their own number He did that
numbering manually.

What he actually meant (my guess) is that when running reports, the report
numbers itself. To see an example, go to Master Source List, tag a few of
them, go to options, print, choose use 'Only tagged individuals', 'Master
Sources and All Citations to each one', choose

I may wildly misunderstanding the question but there is a section of the
video where Geoff explains how he enters census data in the notes of a
census event. He numbers the household members. That is not automatic
numbering you just number them yourself.
