Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage

2018-01-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
Where can I find the "baby steps" for transferring my DNA stuff to
MyHeritage? My test was done at FamilyTree and I am just beginning to
struggle of learning DNA too. Sorry, but computer technology is NOT
intuitive to me even after many years of struggling with it. I have a
strong love/hate relationship with my puters. I almost envy a 6-year-old's
comfort level with computers!

Re: [LegacyUG] How can update my other computer for Legacy

2018-01-11 Thread Linda Greethurst
I have a desktop (my "anchor" machine that I do the data entry) and two
laptops (one that accesses local network and the other that is on the web
for only one purpose -which will be explained).

I use the cloud feature when backing up my data. Whenever I open a
database, regardless of which computer I am on, the first thing I do is to
restore from the cloud my database. But I also have an external drive that
I save to twice a month from my anchor machine (after doing a restore from
the cloud) and I have several flash drives. I might explain that I do NOT
have all of my families on 1 database. I have 4 databases based on my four
grandparents who do not overlap until they get to me. The flash drives get
updated as I work on a particular family

The other laptop - it is older and slower, like me - but I get on the web
only to update the program and once a week to update the 4 databases (from
the cloud of course). This is the only time this computer is being used.

This may seem like a lot of overkill - but in the beginning, I entered a
large number of family members back in the 1980's. The computer crashed
and my TAPE had become corrupted. And Commodore was out of business. At
least I had printed copies. New computer; I re-enter this large family
again, from scratch, only to have it become corrupted a few years later due
to a lightening storm/power surge when our neighborhood took a hit. By now
I was starting to hate this family! So, 30 years later, I have back ups
and more back ups. I will not re-enter this family from scratch again -
not that it is that much larger - just a lot more information on each
individual. (But I still have my most current paper copies - yep, I
support the ink and paper industry.)

So long story made shorter - use the backup/restore buttons to work between
computers. But remember, that is only for the database - not the media.
That has to be done manually.

Re: [LegacyUG] How can update my other computer for Legacy

2018-01-11 Thread Kevin Ferguson
It depends on what you want to update. The Legacy software itself, you data
files or your colateral documentation (i.e. Census prints, certificate copies,
pictures etc.). I keep my machines at the same Legacy levels by manually
updating one, then after a brief test period I update the other. My main
datafile is backed up in the Legacy cloud and I simply restore it on my second
machine. The colateral files I use an external drive for backup so I simply
copy that to the second machine if needed. (I use the same file path layout on
both machines).

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] How can update my other computer for Legacy

2018-01-11 Thread Cathy Pinner

Valerie,

Here are the official instructions for putting Legacy on another computer.

If you are going to use two computers you need some system to keep the
database in sync. That isn't automatic even if you have your database in
the cloud eg in Dropbox UNLESS a) you only have it open on one computer
at a time and b) you allow enough time for it to upload from one
computer and download to the other. How long that time is depends on
your internet speed for a start.

Cheers,
Cathy

Can you give me an address I can use to request that MyHeritage give us the

You can transfer your raw DNA to MyHeritage for free. You must have an account

Donna,

You have to decide how much census data you include. I do much the same as
Geoff Rasmussen does. See the webinar: Watch Geoff Live - entering a census
except I think he shares with other household members. For this webinar you
need a subscription.

I transcribe the household for myself and include the transcription in Event
notes for the head or household or person of interest in the household and in
the Source Detail text.
Others will copy the transcription from a website as is or add corrections and
missing information. I find it is usually quicker to make my own transcription
but then I can type. Transcribing for yourself also means you are more likely
to really see all the data.

I enter a census event for everyone using the Event Clipboard to copy to other
members of the household. It copies the links so if you edit after you copy,
it's th e edited version that is pasted. It is complete with sources and media.

Others use the Shared event option that was introduced in Legacy 8.

Some download and attach census images to the event, others to the source,
others to both. I rarely even download the census image these days except for
direct line or if there is something unusual about the entry.

In terms of sourcing, the source doesn't change in any way for a census
household.
If you haven't learnt to use the Source Clipboard, you need to stop and do that
first as it saves heaps of time. See the free webinar

Just be consistent.

several times but doing very little input. My issue is not so much
with Legacy’s design as it is with trying to figure out how to
efficiently work with the widely different images and text information
that to be inputted. I accept that because of this the data entry is
going to be clunky, but there have to be tricks and tips to make the
process less frustrating. I hope there are some good ideas out in
