Re: [LegacyUG] Does Legacy export pictures in a gedcom?

2019-01-20 Thread CE WOOD
You must upload each picture to MyHeritage. Then you must link each picture to
the person(s) who use that picture.

The linkage is retained only if you do not delete the specific MyHeritage file
in which you made the linkage. If you upload a new gedcom and do not delete the
old MyHeritage file created by the one in which you made the linkage, the
pictures will still show as originally linked.

Any persons or pictures in your new gedcom that were not in your linked
MyHeritage file, will have no pictures linked to them, so you will need to
upload more pictures and link them to your new MyHeritage file.

It gets really complicated if you upload new gedcoms often, because, unless you
keep detailed notes on which of your MyHeritage files have which pictures, you
must keep them all!

If you delete a MyHeritage file, all pictures associated with it are no longer
linked, if they are retained at all!

If you do upload often, it is important to let any members know that they
should access only the newest MyHeritage file you have created if they want to
see any pictures!

Bummer!

Cheers,
CE

Subject: [LegacyUG] Does Legacy export pictures in a gedcom?

Hi,
I exported several gedcoms I made in Legacy to MyHeritage, choosing Myheritage
in the drop down menu, and choosing everything I thought I could include in a
gedcom. In all my attempts, pictures from the Media Gallery never showed up in
Myheritage. What are the settings to make this happen? I hope I'm making sense.

GEDCOM only exports text. It will not do pictures.

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Dave Naylor

Hello Chris,

If all else fails... one trick I've used for a few things like this is
to generate a gedcom of your database. Obviously for this time you need
to include graphic links. Then open the gedcom with a text editor and
do a Search for part of the filename. The line with that filename will
begin with a number, and the lines immediately above it with a lower
number will indicate the item that's linked to the filename.

This trick also comes in handy when searching for specific text that you
know exists somewhere in a Legacy file.

Hope this helps.

The file is linked to one of the sources you have for Joseph Edgar
Swann, it is not linked directly to him so you will not find it in his
media Gallery. Open his attached sources and you will find the missing
media linked to one of those. Hopefully the source names will give you
the clue as to which one has the missing media.

2019-01-20 Thread Brian Kelly
A GEDCOM is a text only file, it cannot include pictures. The only thing
included for media is the path and filename of the media files.

To have the images show up on the My Heritage web site you will have to
upload those files from your computer to the My heritage web servers.
How you would then link those files to your My Heritage family tree I
cannot answer because I do not have a My Heritage account.

I don't know anything about uploading to MyHeritage, but I do know you
will never be able to include pictures in a gedcom because a gedcom is a
text-only file - and a very basic one, at that: no fancy formatting.

It sounds like what I just went through. I can't remember the number of the
error message that I was getting. When I looked it up, it said that last
resort is to remove the program and re-install it. I eventually did, and no
longer get that pesky message :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Chris Hill

Hi Chris

Given that you know the file name that Legacy thinks it - London
England Electoral Registers 18471965(50).jpg - you now need to find out
where it is.

Normally with those it is because I have renamed the file but left
it the the same folder. That gives we a couple of options. From the
Media error dialog, you can just do a manual search, starting in the
same folder, but obviously you wander around until you find it.

Not easy, so it would be better to go outside of Legacy and let
Windows look for it. Start searching anywhere in the SWANN Media folder
and downwards, and try to use a match key for part of it. You could also
put a date range on the search to limit when it was last modified.

Hopefully, you have slightly changed it or just moved it elsewhere.
Also, have a look in the Recycle Bin in case you deleted it.

Regards

Chris
