Did you look at the Relationship Calculator and highlight the line that says
3rd cousin?
That will give you the how.
It simply means

It means they have more than one relationship to the starting person. Right
click and choose View additional relationships or choose to go to the
Relationship Calculator
What does the + symbol signify following a relationship in Legacy 8 family Tree
e.g. Father + OR 3rd Cousin +
