Re: [LegacyUG] Identification of "UnKnown" name

2016-09-12 Thread Elizabeth Verchio
If you use 2 brackets on either side of whatever you put between, it
becomes invisible in some reports.

For unknown maiden names I do the follow:
Johnie Doe is the husband, his wife is Sally UNKNOWN
In Sally's surname field I enter [[JohnieDoe]]
This way, when I see her name in a list I can more readily identify who
she is.
I also have a tag for unknown surnames. When I want to work on missing
surnames, I Search on the tag number.
Everybody seems to have their way of dealing with unknown names, mostly
it depends on how you want that person to look in reports, charts, and
if you do or do not want to use Legacy's built in search for missing data.

Everyone's going to have their own idea on this... I leave any unknown
info blank.

Why??

1. Legacy's Missing Information tab in the Search window won't find it
as missing information if you have anything in that data field

2. Insert Underlines for Missing. in book reports won't insert
underlines if there's anything in the field.

If you want to enter any data in a field that you're not sure of, I
would strongly recommend making a To-Do to search out the correct
information.

Yes, but can always search on "_" to see where there are.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society, in a book entitled "Guide To
Genealogical Writing", says to use exactly five (5) underscores for an
unknown name. Thus, I recently did a mass change of the use of "Unknown" to
the five underscores in Legacy. For one thing, this makes the fact stand
out that the name is not known when scanning a list of names, or otherwise.

Name. I have numerous entries were the current person's name partially
known. Is there a accepted identifier that can be used to signify
"UNKNOWN"? I currently use "Unknown" for either portion of the name.
