Gail, You sound like my Mom. When she was 90 she was entering her "Ramblings of
an Old Lady" (her life story) into her computer. Her macular degeneration has
finally driven her from the computer at 99, but she's still a joy to be with.
If all the Windows 10 technical stuff gets confusing for you, enlist the aid of
a grandchild, great-grandchild or friend who can translate the Windows 10
technical lingo for you? My granddaughter who is 12 is a whiz at computers
since she has grown up with them. The only problem with the younger generation
is they haven't learned patience yet. It's nice if you can get someone to help
you in person - someone to laugh with (or cry with) when it gets exasperating.
Good luck seetting up you new computer. It's been almost 2 years now and
Windows 10 has tried hard but not beaten me down yet. :-)SusanSent from my

Gail,Holly has given you excellent method of transferring the media to the new
computer but missed one helpful setting. It does help to have Options-Customise
6.2 set to the top media folder on each computer and check on your Windows 7
computer whether in the Media Folder Master List all folders start with
[Default Media Folder]\ If they don't, no problem but you may want to make sure
the media is all in the same folder or in a sub-folders of that folder. You can
use the Tools > Gather Media to gather strays into the folder listed at 6.2You
can access the Master List either from 6.2 or View > Master Lists > Media
Folder list.If it isn't using [Default Media Folder]\ for the common part of
the paths, you can use Search > Search and Replace on the Media Folders to
change that common path to the code. When they're using the code, on the new
computer, once you've copied over your Media and put it where you want it, you
just have to set 6.2 and the media is all linked. But do follow Holly's advice.
Once you have transferred, only use the Win 10 computer for Legacy so you don't
have to do it all again. If you haven't read any articles on using and
customising Windows 10, you may want to do that. Google is your friend. Take
control of the Start Menu so it shows what you want and not the junk that is
there when you get a new computer. Check out particularly the Update Settings
so that you control when Windows restarts with an update ...Transferring Media
using the Media backup does make sure you take all the media provided you don't
have paths that are longer than 260 characters (from drive letter to the end of
the file extension), but extracting from the zip, which you do manually,
recreates the whole path from the drive so usually includes folders,
particularly a user folder, that aren't on your new computer and you then need
to move the media by moving the first folder with media actually in it and the
sub-folders in it out of those newly created folders to where you want it. Then
tell Legacy where it is.I keep my Legacy media in Dropbox so once I've
connected Dropbox to a new computer, I just have to set the path at 6.2 in
Legacy to the Dropbox folder and all my media is relinked.Cathy> Holly Nelson

I am not the expert that Cathy is, but here is what I did. I put the media
files from the old computer (I had more than one file) on a usb stick and
copied to the place I wanted them in legacy on the new one. Then I ran the
"media relinker" on the new computer. It did a remarkable job, and then
notified me of the missing media files, which I found on the old computer
and transferred to the new one the same way. After you get that done, you
want to use the new computer for all additions, so you don't have to
somehow link everything again!

Hope that makes sense. Best of luck in the transfer!

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Media File.

2019-09-06 Thread Chris Hill

Hi Gail

Well, this should be simple, but remember that running Legacy on 2
different PCs with no shared data files will cause issues. So the first
questions are :

1. Are they on total separate data files, Legacy .fdb and Media
files. OR have they been shared via Dropbox etc or through USB devices.
2. If they are totally separate, has the Win 10 system had changes
made to the data that is not in the Win 7 version.

If shared, then the data and media should be the same, since there
is only one set of files. From your question it seems that this is not
the case.

In the case of two totally separate sets of data and media, and you
are sure that the Win 10 is the same, or a subset, of the Win 7 system,
then it is just case of backing up the Win 7 data and media files using
the standard Legacy backup. Transfer the backup files, two .zip files,
to the Win 10 and then run the normal Legacy restore for them. But make
a copy of the Win 10 data and media first, just in case you need to
restore them later. At that point, both systems will be the same, but,
of course, any changes made on one will need to be duplicated to the
other, which is what I do if I need to work on my laptop away from home.

If you have the problem of there being differences between the Win 7
and Win 10 systems you will need to resolve that. One way would be to
backup the Win 7 data and media and restore into a different Legacy file
name during the restore. You will then need to run a merge between the
Win 10 and Win 7 versions. However the changes are small, and you can
identify them, it might better to make those changes manually before
copying the Win 7 version.

Also remember that, running with the default settings, the media
files will always be in the same folder. I also think that you might
need to unzip the media backup manually - never had to do it myself.

Regards

Chris

Gail,
The simplest way is to copy W7 media files to an external drive. Then copy
the files from the external drive to W10.1

Gail,

You'll have to tell us more.
Where is the Media List? What do you mean by W10 and W7.
I think you are saying you have a new computer and that you don't have
all your media on your new computer?
See if this article helps.

If not, please tell us more.

Hello all... I would like to replace my Media list in W10 with the
more   upto date Media List I have in W7.  Any thoughts on on how to
do this would be appreciated.
