I made a number of changes, but not enough, it seems. todo works with
PyQt4 but not 5. For example, icons don't appear in headlines.

My guess is that few people will be affected, and those that are can easily
upgrade. For example, my installed version of pyqt is 4.7 on Windows and
4.8.6 on Ubuntu. (It's 5.3.0 on Windows with Python 3.4).

OK, i hope I'm not too late, the error comes from the fonts value in gtk
set up, change your system to oxygen and your fonts will follow, this is a
gui issue not a python issue, i stumbled on it after error code i shut it
down and said i'll deal with it later, changed my desktop and wham, jack
