OK, found the root cause: Display zoom set to 200% in Ubuntu Settings under
Decvice -> Displays. This due to HiDPI monitors.
How can this be corrected? All others with modern HiDPI screens

OK, I found a work around.
Right click on the triangele icon and select "Selection List", then the menu
stay open.
