The key is that the footer needs to be "inserted" into the slide. Well, yes, it already is inserted, but that is where the controls are to define the date, footer text, and where slide number is currently disabled. For me, it has nothing to do with any file format. Steps to reproduce 1.) Create a new impress presentation. Just escape to ignore any templates. 2.) Switch to View - Slide Master. Notice that there is a Number box at the bottom that appears to be visible. Go ahead and add some text in there. 3.) Verify that the page number element is enabled. Slide Menu - Master Elements - Slide number is enabled (which as OP indicates the documentation says it is supposed to be disabled by default.) 4.) Switch back to view - Slide. Notice that there is no page number, nor the text that you added. Am I missing something here? I remember struggling with this a few years ago and probably I just gave up.
