Good news after testing on two Windows7-x64 machines with LO 4.1.2:
Indexing works fine and with good performance after exchanging the DLLs.

Turned out the issue at OpenOffice was different. After Apache took over they
had neglected to put in a 64 bit filter. I uninstalled OOo 3.4 and reinstalled
3.3 and now Windows Search can see
