This appears to be connected to turning on "anti-aliasing" in Writer.
I am experiencing this problem in Ubuntu (16.04) Linux under Version: 6.1.4.2.
If I disable "anti-aliasing" this problem goes

I think this may be fixed with version 5.4.2. The scrolling seems smooth, and
I'm not seeing artifacts left by the page splits either.

I tested using two virtual machines, one with Linux Mint 14 and another with
Windows XP. Neither of these had the issue I described initially. I even

I just realized that if you uncheck the Use Anti-Aliasing option in Tools
Options View, the problem apparently disappears, or at least it becomes
imperceptible (maybe not in a slower computer).

with a Sandy Brige Core i3 and 6Gb of RAM. Maybe it occurs only with Windows 7,
