The default system font in El Capitan is San Francisco.

Sometimes, it would appear that installing other fonts onto your system, e.g.
user installed fonts, or some apps which add fonts to the system, can cause the
font cache to become corrupted, which can lead to weird symbols being inserted
in seemingly random places. Perhaps what we are seeing here is a manifestation
of such a corruption.

The real question is whether the problem was already there and LO just happened
to be affected by it, or whether installation of LO caused the problem, or some
other app was installed subsequently to LO which caused the problem.

A recommendation on how to clear font caches is given here :
http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/08/clear-font-caches-databases-mac-os-x/

It seems that caution is nonetheless preferred before proceeding, as
potentially, you can hose your font display and have to boot into safe mode.

The TDF builds don't contain any strange characters, or at least, not that I've
noticed, in the menus, with or without OpenGL activation.

Tested on :

LO master 5.2 alpha
LO 5032

OSX 10.11.2

FR lang pack installed

My first guess would be that this is caused by some very local problem on the
specific machine. jankyy, do you have access to any other Mac? Do you see the
same problem in that? Can you think of anything that would be special with the
Mac where you see this problem? You talk about "German language package", does
that mean that you installed a German language package in addition to
LibreOffice Vanilla? (That should not be necessary, the App Store builds
already contain several user interface languages including German.) (Note:
several questions, please answer them all...)

There is nothing special with my machine afaik. No changes in system fonts or
other troubles...
And yes, I do have an older MacBook and will try the same thing there.

I think you're right with Vanilla - there was no installing of language packs.
I did that with the previous (non-Vanilla) builds from the homepage.
However, I removed the old builds with AppCleaner and did a recent re-install
of the Vanilla version, with the very same problem...

Thanks for helping. J

Note that the screenshots are not of menus, but of dialog windows. But do you
see strange characters also in menus, Jan?

Let's stop talking about OpenGL already please. That is just a red herring
here, I am fairly sure.

I have never done this, but apparently, this is possible via a script that
installs certain fonts, if my reading of comment 4 in bug 94114 is correct. At
some stage, we removed the "fall back to system font" check option in the
Preferences - View (whatever magic that happened to work, I don't know).

As LibreOffice on OSX doesn't correctly support all of the fonts that a user
can install on his/her OSX, it appears that these get incorrectly substituted
with some symbol font in dialogs and UI elements. That is my theory, I have no
empricial evidence to back it up though.

@jankyy : Look at the attachments posted in bug 94114 - look familiar ? Same
visual effects ?

To me this report looks suspiciously like a DUP of 94114

You say "LibreOffice Vanilla", does that mean you are using the product with
that name as installed from the Mac App Store? (The LibreOffice builds from TDF
are not called "LibreOffice Vanilla".)
