[LIB] Reinstall OS for L50?
Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 05:28:19 -0400 From: Lawrence Fieman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Reinstall OS for L50? After much lurking I now have an L50 with 32Mb memory and 810Mb HD. It came with Win98 (1st ed) and dblspace loaded. One of my programs runs in real DOS only, and restarts the computer in real DOS. However, because of dblspace I do not have enough available memory to run the DOS program. I have to get rid of dblspace. It seems that I need to reformat the HD and re-install an OS (WIN98 2nd ed) to get rid of dblspace and free up memory for real DOS programs. I have a backpack CD that runs off the parallel port, a CD that runs off PCMCIA, and the Toshiba PCMCIA floppy drive. I might need an IDE converter as well. Do you know of a link that describes reformatting and install of an Win98 for the L50? After reading what I could find, I still have some questions about installing the Toshiba drivers and about hibernation. If I install Win98 2nd ed from the Backpack parallel port CD to the L50 will I then have trouble installing the toshiba drivers? Is it best to use an IDE converter and install the new OS with the HD in another machine? The hibernation feature seems like a problem to me. I'd rather not have it. Can I just shut it off some how? If not, do I have to do something special to get it to work -- like setting up a partition for it? Before you decide what method to use for getting w98se on your hard drive, see if the parallel port CDROM drive is seen on boot by DOS. YES. You should experience no problems installing the Toshiba drivers after W98 is installed, regardless of the means. I was wondering because of an experience with a Toshiba Sattelite. After installing W98, it would only boot to *Real* mode, which won't let me install drivers. Having said all that, it may be simpler to pull the drive and do all the work using a 2.5 x 3.5 adapter in a desktop. You can coipy all the Tosh drivers that way, too. BE SURE to partition and format the HDD in the Libretto, though. Does BIOS do this automatically? If not, what size partition need I make (810MB HD)? [LIB] Pen Drive as Swap File? (slightly OT)
Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2003 08:21:44 -0500 From: Lawrence Fieman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Pen Drive as Swap File? (slightly OT) I have a bunch (5) of Toshiba Satellites mostly Pentium 100s with 24MB running WIN95 ( could run WIN98 2nd ed.). Proprietary memory for these things is about $50 for 32MB, and that is the maximum. Now that Pen Drives are cheap (256MB for $50) and probably getting cheaper, I was wondering -- does it make sense to use one for a swap file and is this possible? I would also need a USB PCMCIA card. Why does a 50 or a 70 Max out at 32mb, while the 100 and 110 max out at 64mb? It seems that the workaround for this must be far too much trouble and expense. Otherwise I'd see more postings about upgrading maximum memory.
