I've just tried to use this, and it's failed with unrecognised escaped
string (or whatever the error is).
Is this defined in some file I've got to include, or what's wrong?

The command was renamed for version 2.12:
\fatText - \textLengthOn
\emptyText - \textLengthOff
The on/off naming is more consistent with other commands. You may
