I use separate partitions for /home on all my home machines.
Ubuntu and pretty much all other distros offer an optional install path that
allows you to choose to mount some other drive or partition as /home.

configured in /etc in its config fiile.
Is that on a read-only location, too?

Given what you do every day, I think there is some possibility that you are
going to burn the file system on the remote system
to the target, this would be an easy extra step.
You can add their keys to the server account when you need to, then they have
passwordless access to that account.
