Robert,
I tested Suse 7.2, Red Hat 7 and Debian 3.01 under VM/ESA 2.4.0 using G3
(MP2003),
G4 (9672RB5 and RY5) and G5(MP3000) without any problem. Suse seens to
be more
friendly, but if you know Linux, I recomend Debian. You have no company
asking $$$ to
you as maintenance fee.
Good luck
Robert

Usermode linux is a relatively neat setup for the PC world but
its not afaik running on S/390 and makes some interesting
assumptions too.
Has anyone gotten SLES7 Yast Online Update to work ? Every server I try to
goto says: "File not found on server" Maybe I just need a new list of
mirrors. Any help is appreciated.

I believe I am correct in saying that any supported version of VM (ESA 2.4
or higher) and any zSeries processor will work just fine. A 9672 is not
zSeries, it's a S390 type. This is a 32bit only processor, of course. At
this point in time and going into the future, I would certainly recommend a

That said, you really want to be running z/VM 4.2+fixes or later,
because Guest LANs make your life so very, very, VERY much easier.
Adam
SLES8 should be able to run on any supported level of z/VM on any
supported G5 or higher machine.

We run SLES8 under z/VM 3.1 here on a z900 (2064) LPAR.

I have been given the job of putting Linux under z/VM for a proof of
concept and maybe some internal migrations/conversions. I need to know if I
order SuSe 8, which I believe is the most current, do I need z/VM 4.4? Can
I use 3.1, VM 2, etc? Also, what generation zSeries processor is required?
990,
linuxvm.org is the best general resource. Can you be more specific?

Hi,
I've looking around for a document that tells me release of a certain Linux
(SuSe, RedHat) runs under what level of z/VM and which hardware. Can
someone point me to a place?
Thanks!
Rob
I have not done an extensive comparison between using Linux on ZSeries and
using UML, but from the experiments I have done with e.g. AFS, one thing
stands out very clearly: Linux on zSeries (under VM) provides you with a whole
range of resource management tools that are not available under UML. In
Thanks,
I don't want to put UML on zSeries but I want to prove that z/VM is the
best choice ...
Again it's difficult for me to prove this because i don't master UML anyway

Dunno if UML has been "ported" to zSeries or not.
That would clinch it. Most of us feel the same as you do.
Personally, UML is a great project. But z/VM offers things that
are significant in the most positive ways, things that UML
just cannot do, even if it has been ported: hypersockets,
no
Hi list,
We have plan to implement Linux on zSeries ...
For me there is no doubt about the solution but some people who works on
Linux Intel platform want to use UML instead ...
I'm a mainframer and i don't now anything about UML ...
Do you know the Pros and Cons ...

It may be a draft, but even so things like "Delete this note box when
done" are not the standard one expects from IBM. Perhaps Lotus should
give up Framemaker and use Epic?
