For z/VM 7.1
Hardware requirements
z/VM V7.1 requires a new architecture level set (ALS) that is available on
the:
- z14 Models M01, M02, M03, M04, M05, and ZR1
- LinuxONE Emperor II
- LinuxONE Rockhopper II
- z13
- z13s
- LinuxONE Emperor
- LinuxONE Rockhopper
- IBM zEnt
Hi,
for our customer we started with to provide the Linux, but the Linux team
wanted to provision it self. They bought Wave but didn't like it because they
want to script it. So at the end we use now the CloudConnector for z/VM,
nowadays called Feilong and is part of the openmainframe project
How about z/VM - what's the minimum version required to run RHEL8 guests? I've
reviewed the docs at
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/8/,
including
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html/performing_a_standard_rhel_insta

Hey Bob,
I'm going to chime in with support for zPRO as well. Although not (yet) in
production here, we have taken an extensive look at it and continue to figure
out a migration plan for our non-Dirmaint environment.

Is someone looking for a clone "script" for building Linux server on z/VM?
Sorry, I think I missed the start of this email trail.

Hello Bob!
It *was *a good tool-set and is long gone now unfortunately. Since it was
written specifically for that environment even if I still had it, it
probably would not be of much use except for the concepts.
Humbly I would say zPRO is the way to go because I bet you have better
things to do w
Hi, Jim!
IIRC, you had a good cloning tool or set of tools at your previous employer. Is
that proprietarily copyrighted, or might that be available for us hackers to
adapt to our environments??

In the past (z/VM 5.4) I setup XCAT to do LINUX provisioning .. it was a
bit of a struggle to get it working but it was free and once I got it going
it worked well enough for us.
z/VM 6.4 is different .. I haven't done anything with it.

I did see the "no budget for buying" but I have a shameless product plug.
There is a very affordable, easy to use and vendor-supported product
available called zPRO from Velocity Software that will clone (you get an
exact copy), clone and personalize (exact copy with new network info, etc)
or kicks

I didn't say you had to buy something. I asked how you deploy new Linux
servers on other platforms. This is about integrating Z into your
Alan,
Yes, OK, many shops prefer 'build' over 'clone'. Chapter 2 of
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248303.html?Open
shows how to use kickstart for RHEL.
Our shop still does clones because we have to use golden images hardened by
another team.

Robert,
I would not recommend "read only root". It sounds good on paper, but the
devil is in the details. I'm not sure any shops are still trying that
approach.

I am not worried about oracle but want to just clone a linux alone.
As our DBAs are installing the oracle on Linux guest

We have no budget in buying products to do this
Is there a other way to get the cloning?

I'm interested in this too. I am following the read-only root documentation,
which is starting to show its age a little (RedPaper redp4322 is good, but
copyright 2008), but still has good stuff about gold instances, maintenance and
cloning.
The other documents I have are the workbooks from some
Jake,
This redbook is old, but I'd hope most of it is still pertinent:

See Chapter 10 "Automating Oracle on System z"
Hope this helps.

How does your company deploy Linux and Oracle today (on other platforms)?

Hi Mike
I am using
The Virtualization Cookbook for IBM z Systems Volume 1: IBM z/VM 6.3,
SG24-8147-01
I have built Linux and done with LVM part alone .
We are a small shop non SSI and most of the Linux requirements are for
Oracle.
So which is the best way to do cloning alone ?

Jake,
Which cookbook are you using?
