Paul,
Maybe you find some more input for your article on the history of virtualization.(details about the history of VM and S/370 / S/390 / zSeries) in Lynn Wheelers notes:
Consider what MPG offered: Increased performance. Moving to a more
powerful machine plus the ability to RESERVE or LOCK guest pages helps
make up for the loss of MPG. Plus, the limit of 6 preferred
guests makes
it less interesting for server consolidation, IMHO.

At a high level, the IO characteristics of a pSeries and a well-configured
(I say again: WELL-CONFIGURED) Intel box are very similar. The major
difference is in the type of numerical applications and how the numerical
applications use the processor. Intel systems do slightly better at
applications
My apologies for my ugly post, a few moments ago. I did not made the

Sorry, might have worded this incorrectly... We can build a
kernel using
Red Hat's kernel-source or kernel-*.src.rpm packages
*exactly* as supplied
and changing only config options, and we will be supported.
If we patch
their kernel (or remove one of their patches), or build a

Hello,
I am running zVM 4.2 in an LPAR on a zSeries machine with 4.5GB real storage
and 1.5GB expanded storage defined to it. I have 12 to 15 zLinux guests
active at any given time. The main Linuxes are DB2/UDB (3) and WebSphere
(4). Each of these are defined with a virtual machine size of
When you talking about intra-LPAR sharing, do you mean using
a Guest LAN?
Or do you mean shared OSA by multiple guests? In the shared
OSA case, I
don't know why you would see the MAC change. That's something I would
expect of Guest LANs.
I guess I did say that wrong didn't I? What I

First, page movement of 152/sec is really not very significant.
Not when many installations run at 1000's per second.
2nd, a good performance monitor (ESAMON comes to mind) will
tell you which users are paging, how much, where their storage
is located. It would also show exactly what that 59%
Ok, I finally managed to trip over the email that I had stopped looking for.
:P
The person having the problem was one of my co-workers in South America. He
had moved a Linux/390 system from being in an LPAR, to being a z/VM guest.
When he tried to IPL the guest, he was getting this:
HCPGIR450W
My guess that why the z990 only supports LPAR mode is that quite radical
changes will be required to
z/OS, z/VM, Linux for zSeries or any other operating system that is going to
run in basic mode.
By using a hypervisor one can actually emulate the current channel
implementation, so these operating
DOESN'T always change. (I thought I say it before...)

Boy, that sounded snotty didn't it? It was SUPPOSED to be saW!!! :-O
