While this is relatively cheap solution,
I suspect that you are indeed right - reliability is questionable in a USB to
serial. I have had devices with good reliability and some with dismal (same
maker).

for embedded Linux means simple, cheap, durable.
Currently I integrate AirPrime Fastrack GO GPRS modem. It is USB ACM device.
I suppose there are better solutions.
