I worked with it before and failed to utilize the hiddev interface (
kernel 2.4). Not sure if the situation has changed in 2.6 kernel.
libusb + usbdevfs will do the job.

As far as I understand, current HID wasn't designed for this kind of
usage. It could take time to change, if it will happen at all.
For now, usbfs could be an alternative way:
