This is due to bad firmware in the Scanlogic drive itself, and is fairly easily fixed.
If you go to the scanlogic website there is a ( win98 only ) binary you can download
to update the firmware. I did it myself this weekend.

Has anyone ever installed Linux from a USB CDROM?
I have a machine that supports USB CDROM boot which I have duly selected.
The machine boots OK from the USB CDROM but then fails to recognise
