I used the programs: pscoast; psxy; and pstext, all from the GMT package. to make the map in PostScript file format. I then imported the resultant .ps file into the GIMP, turning on the anti-aliasing to full. I also used the GIMP to move the word 'Whakatane' to the north of the town instead of to

True, true. I just wrote a quick Python script that converts a list of 'things' with lat/lon coordinates into a GPX file. The GPX file can be loaded into various mapping tools (including Google Earth) and is understood by http://www.gpsvisualiser.com. I used my GPX file with GPSvisualizer to
