Maybe it would help to use the basic HTML interface, which doesn't require
(or even use?) JavaScript. That's what I set my account to use, because it
ran too slowly when using JavaScript with my slow, rural dial-up connection.

browser - it does update
I do know that Gmail's AJAX stuff does a lot of talking to and from the
server.
It might be that it can get pretty big over time.
