Hey, its your call. As far as i'm concerned there are Plextor Yamaha burners, and then there's everything else. --- David Aikema [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On October 3, 2001 07:09 pm, Net Llama wrote: You, sir, need to take a trip to pricewatch.com, immediately. All others are of questionable quality, and will either: 1) not work at all under Linux 2) work very poorly, generating alot of coasters 3) fail early in their lifespans The LiteOn model shows up as working under linux (in the linux-mandrake hardware database as working). The cd-record homepage also suggests that all cd-writers produced in 1999 or earlier are supported. Its just the burn-proof that I'm worried about. Right now i see a US$76 Yamaha CRW8824E 8x8x24 INTERNAL IDE CD-RW 8824E at pricewatch. Even with the Canadian exchange rate, its still cheaper than the one below. Re: CD-RWs
I have a Yamaha 4x4x16 that I purchased 2 years ago and it's burnt hundreds of cd's and it's still going strong. I'd recommend a Yamaha or Plextor. Most low end burners are reboxes. They are made by someone else(one or more companies) and then have a different faceplate, sticker and box put with it. HiVal is one such company that does this. As for the burn-proof, this is supported by the latest version of cdrecord. As for the LiteOn or LG being any good, well, it's a crap shoot. If you buy a Yamaha or a Plextor, you will know for sure that it's quality merchandise and won't have any problems with it. I'd do some more looking around if I were you. Re: CD-RWs
Don't know about burn proof, I have read that people can't make it work, but how do I know if it works or not? Just know the drive burns cd's using cdrecord. CD-RWs
It's becoming more and more apparently that in the modern world a CD-RW is almost essential. But of course there's not much money in my budget to pick one up so I'm looking at the low end of the market. A local retail store's got a LiteOn 16x10x40 cd-rw on sale for $137CDN until the weekend which is $2 more than my normal supplier of parts offers for an OEM 12x10x32 drive by the same company. I'm wondering if this model would be a good bet it only has a 2 meg data buffer but does have burn-proof technology by Samsung. (Is burn-proof supported by cdrecord and any other linux software? ...does it even require software support?)
