Yeah, if you need that, sure, a tool like that is fine (we use Zoom where I work for much the same thing.) But if you *only* need chat, I don't think using closed protocols is a good thing. I also get really annoyed at the restrictions of tools like Slack and Zoom. There are a host of integrations that I've trivially done with IRC that are impossible with those tools. To give you one example, I want to be marked away when I lock my screen and marked back when I unlock it. That was a few lines of scripting in my IRC client, but impossible (AFAIK) in Slack or Zoom. There are tons of libraries in your favourite scripting language that let you write useful IRC bots, but the commercial counterparts' APIs are much more restrictive, in my experience. > Figured a tool like slack might spark up some buzz in the > group as there are many Dev's who use Linux in mixed environments for > many different purposes, not just a single o/s, all open environment. Sorry, didn't meant to upset people. I'm new and was planning on attending meetings and wondered if there was something other that the existing website. In IBM DevOps, we use slack as a valuable tool to not just send emoticons but plug into a host of collaborative tools to share ideas, help one another via group web conferencing, screen sharing and much much more. Figured a tool like slack might spark up some buzz in the group as there are many Dev's who use Linux in mixed environments for many different purposes, not just a single o/s, all open environment. Some days I do wish our world was like that though, it would certainly make things easier in some ways. Thanks for the IRC info. Cheers. Re: [linux] Slack Channel
There are slack lists for oclug and its board. We run some Board meetings on Slack and it has been quite easy to use. Earlier we were on IRC, which I would rate AT THE TIME as being much less convenient. The "at the time" may be important, as I've not tried it for a few years with a more modern interface app. This is most likely an issue of the interface vs. underlying protocol. For Board meetings it's useful to have a clean interface that lets us see the discussion that is happening, and also a log for the Secretary to use to build minutes. But here I'm looking only at the "Board Meeting" issue, which is a short term, several people at once sort of thing. For general discussion, I'm not sure Slack is useful or appropriate. Re: [linux] Slack Channel
The only thing really wrong with this list as a discussion forum is that it is reply-to-originator not reply-to-list. I know that's what the RFC suggests but it is not the best setting for a discussion forum. Of course if this is only meant to be a means of disseminating information about upcoming events then reply-to-originator would be the best setting, and we'd need a separate list for discussion. There is an IRC channel: #oclug on OFTC.NET https://webchat.oftc.net/?nick=WHATEVER&channels=%23oclug&uio=d4 I'm now going to go on a rant. :) I would not be interested in a Slack channel. IRC is open-source with an open protocol; Slack is closed-source with a closed protocol. I don't think OCLUG should be in the business of promoting closed source or closed protocols. Slack has discontinued options for using open protocols. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/03/09/slack_cuts_ties_to_irc_and_xmpp/ You can't log in to Slack as more than one user at a time.
