Re: [WSG] web05 and other web conference links

2006-10-27 Thread Mike Brown
Hi everyone: could someone send me the link to web05 (that was in
Australia) and perhaps other more recent conferences. Looking for
examples of using podcasts and also how people ended up putting their
supporting materials on the web (i.e. power point slides, that sort of
 thing).

From Webstock:

[WSG] Accessibility statement

2006-06-15 Thread Mike Brown
Does anyone have opinions on what's thought good practice for
accessibility statements nowadays? I've generally been using some
variation on what Mark Pilgrim (Dive into Mark) did a few years ago, but
wonder if what's appropriate has moved on since then.

Thanks

Mike

Re: [WSG] Webstock

2006-05-24 Thread Mike Brown
I'd just like to wish Mike et al good luck with the conference starting in
 about 8 hours.

about 2 hours :)

I know exactly how you feel this morning.

Nervous!!

You are now officially dribbling the Web Standards Conference ball in the
 southern hemisphere.

Thank you so much Peter!

Just in case people are interested, most of the presentations over the
next two days will be recorded and made available as podcasts and video
after the conference.

[WSG] Setting focus in a form and screenreaders

2006-04-23 Thread Mike Brown
If I set focus in a form to a particular field when the page loads
(through javascript), does that have impact on a screenreader? eg - will
it start reading from the field that is in focus and effectively skip
over all content before that in source order?

Anyone know?

ok, having quickly tested in a demo of Jaws, it appears that it does.
Jaws starts reading from the input form on page load.

This would seem a major accessibility problem to me then! Any arguments
that it's not?

Re: [WSG] Web Standards Speech

2006-04-02 Thread Mike Brown

Alvaro MouriƱo wrote:

I'm a member of a local group called Debian Uruguay [0]. Several
members offered voluntarily to give speeches about any subject. I
volunteered too, in my case to give a speech about Web Standards [1].

The point that I will emphasize is accesibility, and I want to
demonstrate this by browsing non-standards-compliant sites (and
standards too) with a browser for blind or low-vision users. Is there
any that is free? (free as in free software) I don't know any, so I'm
a little lost. I would like to know the choices available and
advantages/disadvantages of each one.

The last thing is that this is the first time I give a speech, so
maybe someone with a little more experience in this matter could point
me some subjects I should/should not talk about.

Hi Alvaro

I gave a talk just under a year ago on web standards. It's up here:
http://www.govis.org.nz/conference2005/presentations/mike-brown-html/index.html
and may give you some ideas.

It's best viewed in something like Firefox and in full-screen mode
(F11). If you print it out, or print preview, you can also see my
speaking notes.

Hope it might be of some use :)

it is with this email, so I promise it's my last and feel free to give
me a stern talking to :)

A few tips I always try to keep in mind:
1. always wear cloths when public speaking
2. face the audience when talking to them (for some reason this can engage
them???)

See, for you Russ, and i *do* mean this in the best possible way,
speaking naked (without cloths on ;) would absolutely engage the
audience. I think you need to try this approach. I'm sure you, and the
audience, will be pleasently surprised at the results.

[WSG] Environmentally conscious websites

2006-03-30 Thread Mike Brown
With a looming winter power shortage in New Zealand, Webstock
www.webstock.org.nz has decided to act now and do our bit to help save
energy. We've redone the site in a way we're convinced is a model for
more rational and sustainable energy use.

Please take a look, and please spread the word. This is something we
think's important. And any feedback on how we might improve on what
we're doing is welcome too.

Thanks
