Re: [OSGeoLive] Presentation.

2018-02-27 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I figured it out. I needed the whole reveal.js javascript lib to make it work.
Just have to repoint some of the javascript locating links at the bottom of
the main presentation page.

I’ve got it all running locally now from a USB drive.

Thanks

Hi Bob,

As it seems you have noticed, the front page of the slide deck [1] says:

Press "s" for slide notes, ESC to zoom out, SPACE / arrow keys to navigate.

It is possible you have been pressing upper case "S" (which doesn't work)
instead of lower case "s" (which should work).

What should happen is another browser window will open up. If your browser has
been configured to prevent the opening of popups, then that might be the
problem you are experiencing. Maybe see if you have an error message saying
that a window is being blocked from being opened, or check your settings, or
try a different browser.

Hope that helps, Cameron

2018-02-27 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Hi Cameron,

The “s” options works fine when I run it from the Website (online), but when I
try to save the presentation locally and run if from a local file location, the
NOTE aspects are not found. I can get both to work independently (so far). I
downloaded the NOTEs pages locally as a separate download, just trying to link
them together correctly, in the main presentation.

I want to be able to run without a internet connection, etc. all resources
contained on a Thumb drive.

Just looking for hints on where the link might be in the main presentation.

[OSGeoLive] Presentation coming up, how to announce and get advocation from OSGeo??

Hello,

I have a presentation coming up soon here:

https://gitasw.org/lightning-overview-of-the-best-geospatial-open-source/

We’ll be distributing Live demo USBs to attendees as well.

Should/Could this be added to the Event list at OSGeo?

Also, would like to get some sort of OSGeo advocation statement if possible.
Maybe listing on the Events would be good enough though. The organizers of the
conference want to send out a media blast in the next couple of days and wanted
to incude something OSGeo specific related to this presentation.

Seaprately, what if any, is the approach moving forward for OSGeo to partner
with GITA??

Thanks

Re: [Live-demo] openhub.net stats

2017-07-06 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I noticed similar faults in the readouts for the GeoMOOSE project. It should
be centered on Javascript as the Language but it’s being advertised as mostly
PHP for some reason. I couldn’t find a spot to edit that either. It may be
some sort of automated counter that the results are generated from, but even
the last audit shows more Javascript lines of code.

GeoMOOSE had the same problems with line counts when moving between repos as
well. I think that was taken care of manually a little while ago.

Anyway, just chiming in.

projects. Personally, I feel OSGeo should have this ability in-house, along
with other methods, and not rely so heavily on this one metric site. Certain
project's measurements are horribly wrong to this day, and inevitably carry
bias of varying kinds.

Re: [Live-demo] Motion: Move from 2 releases to 1 per year

2017-04-25 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I like the rolling release idea, it will allow for a always up to date version
of things. The Stable (yearly) release will always be floating in the
background too. Not so sure about the Yearly release schedule though. Maybe
Yearly at a minimum? There might be those instances where a yearly cycle won’t
sync up with OSGeo project, event, etc.

Still a +1

Reasons:

* As per prior discussions, we want to use our volunteer time more efficiently.

* We have improved build processes to be agile and efficient. However, our
final test process still has significant manual testing. In particular around
reviewing and updating documentation, and testing quickstarts.

It is missing our early history (2005-2009). It is confused about our recent

As a project we would much rather be putting our time into maintaining 2.9.x

You're correct to say that these metrics should not be the only criterion for
removing projects from OSGeo-Live. There are so many other (in my view more
important) factors to consider:
- is the software useful? Is the software reliable?
- is the inclusion straightforward or does it require lots of building /
packaging / patching / dependency-resolution work from the OSGeo-Live team?
- does it take up a lot of disk space?
- is the team responsive to questions from the OSGeo-Live team, are the
developers helpful with providing information and documentation?
- and many other factors too of course.

I think it should be a priority of all projects to try an ensure their
OpenHub metrics reflect the true health of their project ...
Well, OpenHub (BlackDuck) is a company. If (in your opinion) their numbers
aren't providing a useful picture then it is arguable whether this should be put
at the door of all the unpaid open software developers, or alternatively at the
door of the company's staff and systems.

Bas,

We’ve been making Thumb drives for a few years now and DVDs before that. We’ve
been making the Thumb Drives by hand on our own, which is a bit of time and
effort to complete. We’ve been handling this for our own promotional purposes
of OSGeo, etc and have only been building less than 75 at a time.

We’ve also installed some of the OSGeo-Live apps on a Raspberry Pi to good
effect, but we haven’t tried a whole Live install on a PI yet, but all
indications are that it would (mostly) work. The Short answer is, we’ve figure
out the mechanics of this, but the writing of the actual hardware would require
some funding to complete as a repeatable process.

[Live-demo] Request for funding of OSGeo Live thumb drives.

2016-03-04 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

First, let me know if this is the wrong list to request from.

We’re holding a regional Geo conference and would like to include a OSGeo-Live
thumb drive in each attendees goody bag. So, please consider this an official
request for funding of OSGeo Live Thumb Drives for the event.

This is a multi- discipline, multi-state event for all things Geo. 60
confirmed presenters. This will be a highly knowledgable audience and because
of the varied subject matter it will be an excellent venue to get the word out
about OSGeo and it’s mission, via the OSGeo Live project. More info about the
event can be seen here:

www.umgeocon.org

We’ve planned for 350 attendees. We can make our own thumb drives, and/or pay
to have them made ourselves. We’ve handed these out in the past and will also
include a getting started cheat sheet for each user to get them going with the
least amount of effort.

I haven’t checked lately for the going rate on these. Local suppliers are
advertising ~$5 each for an 8GB USB3.0 blank drive.

Request is for $2000 ($1750 for Drives, $250 for copying the OSGeo Live suite
to each).

Related, my submission of the OSGeo Live presentation has been accepted at the
event, and there will also be a (free) GeoMOOSE workshop.

I was thinking something like:

“No network has been configured”

Assuming an easy check of the Network is possible in an automated way. Then
maybe a link to the wifi docs at the end?

We did some testing from a guest laptop in secured wifi office setting. Most
new users will likely try something like this in their office for example, and
it’s not obvious that the network needs to be managed upon first start up. I
agree that a DHCP setup is likely to work just fine out of the box. Shooting
at the lowest common denominator here unfortunately.

This should probably be its own thread, but just to add some
clarification.

The no networking issue generally occurs when people boot the USB on
their computer (not in a VM) and they are expecting to use WiFi and
either the WiFi drivers aren't available or they don't realize they need
to select and authenticate to a network.

Note: Wired networks could theoretically have the similar issued but in
practice tend to just work (or just don't get used as often).

Re: [Live-demo] [Ica-osgeo-labs] Ideas/inputs for having a cloud service that runs the OSGeo-Live VM

2015-10-14 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

We’ve had success locally/regionally with preparing thumb drives with
OSGeo-Live. I’m not sure about running everything over the internet in a
training scenario, but there may be some good reasons to put some of the
services into a dedicated location for online use.

The idea of having a online version running gets the idea mill running, what if
something like that could be used to pick and choose from for preparing a USB
drive for training sessions?

2015-03-03 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

This is why we like to load them ourselves. We make sure they work with
before handing them out.

IMO, these USBs are the single best method of promotions for OSGeo and the
community of workers it supports. Having something that someone can take with
them and get running as a travelling demo is invaluable.

Just singing my praises for the product. But also hoping that some sort of
method can be devised where all or most of the costs are subsidized for the
creation of the USBs. For handout at conferences.

Hi Cameron,

Probably not everyone requesting OSGeo-Live USBs / DVDs would expect to get
them for free. I would even say, that they don't need to be for free.

I think for small events and paid or unpaid workshops it's just a lot of work
to find a shop that prints USB sticks in a good quality for a reasonable price.
Also you would have to order quite a lot to get a discount. And it happens
unfortunately too often that images on sticks are later not bootable or there
are other issues.

So if OSGeo would be able to negotiate a good price with some USB stick dealer
and maybe cover the shipping costs, that would probably be enough.
To be able to order OSGeo Live sticks that you hand out and you are sure they
work as expected, that saves a lot of work.

1. Define a criteria for why a group will / will not be allocated OSGeo-Live
USBs / DVDs, and how many they can be allocated. Eg: a FOSS4G related event can
have number of USBs = 10% of number of attendees, handed out from a booth. Paid
workshops should cover the cost of USBs for attendees. ...

2. Someone needs to write up a budget, which is then approved by marketing
committee / board.

3. Someone needs to select a printer, and sort out a payment method.

4. Someone needs to volunteer to administer requests. Ie, approve requests
according to criteria, then send request to printer and have the USBs posted
out.

Re: [Live-demo] Retire MapTiler from OSGeo-Live

2015-02-09 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I have a different take on all of this project naming. I've always been under
the belief that if you put something out as open source, then it's out there
name and all, and that's it (regardless of what the legalese might suggest).
It just seems like this is the courteous way to contribute to the community.
While there are other interpretations of trademarking, I always thought of it
as a way of keeping control of the name so others couldn't hijack it for other
projects, and not so I had exclusive right to do so at a time of my choosing.
I don't think that just because it's a single person or a group that it should
be permissible. It needs to be one standard for all. Maybe this is used as a
lesson learned in this situation, but I would hate to have to put yet more text
into place to describe this type of thing as an incubation step.

Looking at this from the community perspective it would be more painful for the
community to rebrand, and with few if any interested in this prospect I don't
see that the community should be tasked with the process. If someone comes
forward to do it, well, that's fine. The short of this is that if it works,
and it's relatively painless for the OSGeo-Live to keep it on the distribution,
then leave it there. Brand it as still working but end of life or something.
It does sound like there is still some use of the package, and the emphasis
from OSGeo seems to be put on actively developed projects, vs just plain old
working, it seems like the working aspect should play into things more.

Removing it from service seems wrong while it still works, even without a
dedicated development group. There is also the question of older versions (and
users) on older distros of Live-dvd. Since I assume these are free for use
still, than the same goes for the current version on OSGeo Live. If at some
point there is renewed desire to develop then the question of naming could be
revisited, but I still think once it's out there in the wild it's out there in
the wild, and that's it.

Ok, said my piece. :c)

Hi all,

First of all I would like to thank Petr for his work on Maptiler. He has
actually spent a lot of unpaid time to develop a tool which is useful for many
users.
Earning a living from open-source is hard - as most people who have tried will
be able to tell you.

Second I would like to point out that a project that has many users and little
contributors is not necessarily unsuccessful. If your tool is working well, it
may not scratch a developers itch[1].

Anyway, it seems that by retiring from OsGeo live you did hit many developers
itch, so it seems this may actually be a rebirth of the project.

I think that the request of Petr is fair: the code remains free (which it
should, because there can be many derived works), but he just requests not to
use the name and logo. This leaves room for other developers to jump in and
create a new version. Yesterday on IRC, I proposed the name IceTiler as an
alternative, based on the rebranding done by debian for many mozilla projects
[2]. Other suggestions are welcome :-)

Taking all into account I'm +1 on removing this project from OsGeo live in the
current form, but I think we could have IceTiler in a next release if there
is sufficient interest.

Kind Regards,
Johan

Hi OSGeo projects,

OSGeo-Live has a cool page which aggregates OpenHUB metrics about each project,
giving readers an insight into the maturity of each project.
http://adhoc.osgeo.osuosl.org/livedvd/docs/en/metrics.html

From this page, you can get an indication of which projects are actively being
developed.

Unfortunately, there are some projects which have misleading information (maybe
due to repositories moving), or no information, which we are helping projects
can help rectify.

If your project's statistics seems inaccurate, then click on the Project's
heading in the metrics page to go to the OpenHUB page. Then find the
Settings, and update what is missing (such as a new code repository).

If your project is missing, then please either locate or add it in OpenHUB and
tell us where it is so that we can add it to the OSGeo-Live metrics page.

If you wish to see this information in the next OSGeo-Live release, then please
get it updated within the next few days, by Friday 13 February at the latest.

[Live-demo] Live Demo presentation earlier this week.

2014-10-30 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

Just a short note to the list about a Presentation I did this past Tues at the
Illinois State GIS Association Annual Conference in Chicago.

The presentation went over very well. There were a number of walkup folks with
questions afterwards. We also handed out 23 USBs with the Live Demo Installed
to folks interested in trying it out.

The Open Source presence at this conference was very light and mention of Open
Source, while it existed was minimal. Our group presented two other
presentations related to Open Source that were also very well attended as well.

Some Notes:

* This was the first time I used the REAVEL.JS presentation, it worked
rather well, and I used this as tool to hook the audiences' attention early on
by describing how it worked and how they could start using it themselves.

* A few of the project Icons on the pages were bad links, I had
planned on going in and fixing them beforehand, but never ended up with time to
do it. I did look at the code and it looks like it might have been generated
with some sort of script. Maybe re-running it is in order.

* There were a few of the project Icons that displayed larger than
others, and pushed some of the other Icons off screen somewhat.

* As a presenter not knowing the details about each and every projects
capabilities, I would have liked to have had a one-line description on each
project slide about its capabilities. I did see in the code something called
presentation notes that looked to contain some of this type of information, but
I never did figure out how to display this during the presentation, probably
something easy to do, though, that I just don't know about.

Thanks to all those that put the presentation together, it worked very well for
this presentation, and I'm sure other in the future.

Thoughts on the future:

* I have a couple of other conferences coming up locally that I may
decide to present at, I may be able to put some time into fixing some of the
notes items about before then.

* I wondered about setting up more of a branding mechanism in the
presentation with regard to the background, etc. Might be nice to package the
reveal.js package with simple instructions on how a sponsoring organization
might insert their own logo into the presentation easily, I had to go into the
code to figure it out for example.

* Ok, this one might be better mentioned after I have created one, but
I wonder about setting one or two of these reveal presentation up for each
project to replace the Quickstarts and Overviews for each project, even going
so far as to say that they need to be in place by some point in the future.

Thanks again for the hard work in setting this up.

that are not in the OSGEO proper listings, etc. It might lead to some
confusion about whether a project is really a OSGeo project or not the
OSGeoLive project is touted as an OSGeo Incubated project.

Up until now, the case has been to include all projects with an interest in
being included. Correct?

Subject: [Incubator] Incubating OSGeo-Live as an OSGeo project

At our OSGeo-Live weekly meeting today, it was proposed that we should take
OSGeo-Live through the OSGeo Incubation process, effectively making OSGeo-Live
an official OSGeo project.

As it currently stands, we believe OSGeo-Live is in pretty good shape, and
incubating should be reasonably straight forward (although incubating
traditionally takes quite a bit longer than people expect).

So to the OSGeo community:
Are there any comments for or against incubating OSGeo-Live?
Do we have volunteers willing to help out with the incubation process.
Typically, the most time consuming part of incubation is auditing the license
of code to ensure it complies with stated Open Source licenses.

For the OSGeo Incubation committee,
Is there someone willing to step forward and mentor us through incubation. I
would volunteer myself, but I'm planning to be involved in incubating
OSGeo-Live myself.

I'm doing a presentation (semi-) locally on OSGeoLive.

Any thoughts from folks on anything new for presentation.

I was going to start from the OSGeo Live presentation (reveal.js thingy . . .)

a couple of versions back, just wondering about any big new things to keep in

Re: [Live-demo] Retire MapTiler?

2013-07-23 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I think that unless a package/project is getting in the way of something more
important, lack of custodian, space on the LiveDVD, etc. that should be
perpetuated indefinitely. I also believe it wise to add in a note or README to
the effect that the version being viewed was last updated on SOME-DATE, with
some sort of indication that the project has matured and/or has been
dead-lined. Including some links to alternate projects might even be
appropriate.

Should there possibly be a CLASS of projects on the DVD that has been deemed
mature/end-of-life, but still available?

I have to admit, that I have a hard time throwing things away myself. So my
remarks should be taken with a grain of salt.

Lastly, I believe having a history of projects around over the long term has
some value to it. Even if the project is removed from the DVD I think it wise
to keep it available as long as possible, regardless of the support structure,
as long as it doesn't impede future work.

I'd like to hear thoughts on whether we should be retiring MapTiler.

My thoughts are that we should be helping new users find established Open
Source projects, which typically are projects which have a strong community
behind them.
I note that MapTiler hasn't changed version number since OSGeo-Live 3.0, and is
still reported as a beta status.

I also note from the Ohloh metrics, there seems to be very little
development:

I suspect that users might be moving to another project instead? Eg:
GeoWebCache?

As per request from Klokan Petr Pridal, the MapTiler point of contact, we
   should retire MapTiler.

Of note, MapTiler has remained at version 1.0beta2 for a few years now
(since OSGeo-Live 3.0), which suggests a diminishing open source community
   behind the project.

   Todo:
   * Update maptiler Project Overview and Quickstart to retired status in

   * comment out install_maptiler.sh from main.sh installers

   * comment out maptiler from metrics.rst docs

 Comment(by hamish):

I find the MapTiler program to be still useful and relevant, and would by
willing to maintain it on the live dvd on an ongoing basis. (it's tiny and
zero maintenance anyway so I don't mind much)

Since it just works, it doesn't matter that there hasn't been a new
   version in ages.
It just means it is mature; the GDAL backend it uses regularly updated so
   it gets updates that way.

All,

I did a little book print out of the Overviews from the LiveDVD for a local
conference. It was looked at a couple of times, but I think a 8.5x11 sheet for
each project would be a better bet for printing out, one for each project.
I've done Tri-folds in the past for GeoMoose for example.

I would like to suggest something similar as a resource for using at
Conferences.

Having the software options all laid out and grouped by product type would go a
long ways on the sale front.

Daniel,
I'm splitting this email thread into 2, in order to address your
comments separately.

First:
You have made a very valid suggestion that the Marketing Committee
provide a couple of simple fliers.
I believe we have the basis for most, if not all of this, but as noted,
it is hard to find.
I think the action out of this is for the marketing committee to
identify our key marketing fliers (and posters, and video loops, etc)
which we have available, and in particular, ensure it is up to date.
This should then all be referenced from one visible spot.

This will make it easy for LOCs to print and distribute the material.

 Hi Cameron, all,

I'll answer with two different hats:

My experience from trying to organize OSGeo's presence at events in
the past is that DVDs/USBs/Stickers might be nice to give away, but to
make a real impact, you'd need a couple of simple flyers that explain
efficiently what OSGeo is about, what it does, and why visitors should
care about it. This was a blocker for us (the Quebec chapter) and
would be even more important than DVDs/USBs/Stickers and local groups
don't have the time/resource/knowledge to prepare that.

If this material already exists then great, let's promote it and not
focus solely on the DVDs. It's easy to send out a PDF to organizers
that they can print locally at very low cost. As an active member of
OSGeo I was not able to find anything relevant last time I checked, so
we ended up abandoning our free OSGeo booth due to lack of contents
(and as the organizer of the rest of the event I didn't have time to
work on that). If the material had existed in English we could have
translated it, but I could not even find a relevant English flyer.

All this to say that personally I am questioning whether it is really
worth sending out DVDs/USBs/Stickers to 50 - 100 events around the
world when we are lacking a simple PDF in multiple languages that
local people could print to hand out at a booth.

Re: [Live-demo] [Marketing] Proposal: OSGeo home page to link to OSGeo-Live Project Overviews

2013-04-05 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Cameron,

I was thinking more along the lines of a for information item, that showed the
last edit of the particular overview. Very similar to a version of overview I
guess. Based on the conversation here, it sounded like a version could be used
on more than one LiveDVD, without being changed between the versions. So the
user would know that they are looking at an older version.

I suppose the review process could be considered a version of sorts, but unless
the reviewer is actually a part of the project, it seems like it might be good
to know when the last edit was made from a party inside of the project circle.

2013-04-04 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Hamish,

Interesting thought occurred to me as I read your post related to Wikipedia.

Does it make any sense to feed the Wikipedia pages with a summary of the
projects in the OSGeo Live overviews, or is this a self-defeating option, since
you then are competing for hits? My first thoughts are that this would
increase cross linking and possibly direct more potential user to OSGeo.

Bobb

I propose that instead the list should link to the OSGeo Live
  Project
   Overviews, such as:
   http://live.osgeo.org/en/overview/deegree_overview.html

I don't feel strongly one way or the other about it, just to note
that in the past months I've been pointing to the live.osgeo.org
overview pages when mentioning a project to someone, in the same
way that one might link to wikipedia when describing some thing
or another. I think the live dvd overview pages fill that role
quite nicely, and as Cameron mentioned they're kept reasonably up
  to date.

The GeoTools descriptionhttp://www.osgeo.org/geotools is terribly out of date
neither of the two renderers described exist anymore, the project is no longer

The USB stick version is the same ISO as the DVD just made into a
bootable usb. We have a schedule to finish 6.5 by Mid February
well in time for Foss4gNA. The trickiest part about usb sticks is
finding a vendor in the US who can actually make them bootable -

OSGeo does not usually pay for DVDs or USB sticks for

Re: [Live-demo] Replacing MapServer/MapCache/TinyOWS with MapServer Suite on OSGeo-Live?

2012-11-15 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
All,

I think they should be thought of as two different things, the MapServer Suite
and MapServer (plus each of the other things).

I tend to use MapServer more as a services LIB in a non-dependent way, as in no
other dependencies required. I (as well as others) have been using it this way
for years I would imagine.

The MapServer Suite I envision as a way to package a demonstration product.
I'm looking at all of this from the end user side of things of course, and not
from the source side, where combining things like docs, packaging and such is
more of an enticing option. If the code base is going to somehow merge between
these, then this combining of docs and such would make much more sense. But if
the separate project code bases are still separated and data travels between
packages, in a pipeline fashion for example, then the pieces should remain
separate.

If there are going to be lone MapServer downloads still available, then I think
the associated docs and packaging aspects would need to remain separate as
well. I could however see a way to merge these types of things in some sort of
on demand system, where certain components are chosen for install and only
those docs and package instructions are merged and only in an on demand
fashion. Using the same Styling and layout aspects would make much more sense
in the near term to set up as well (if they aren't already).

All,

I've been trying to come up with a similar approach to things, but looking at
it from the product side of things. Working more towards a business angle.
This pre-packaging seems like s good spot in a distribituion pipline to
monetize things for support of further package development.

  Subject: [Live-demo] Rethinking osgeo-live

I've not really thought this through, but I'll put it out there
  for discussion...

Would the effort spent on creating the osgeo-live disc be better
spent creating a 'portable' set of compiled applications, for
  Linux, Mac, and Windows platforms?

The advantage would be that a user wanting to try something out
would just copy the bits they wanted to their PC, and use their
existing operating system. An installer would just copy what the
user wanted and handle dependencies (much like osgeo4w, but
  multi-platform).

It would also be more likely to be usable on machines with a
locked-down boot sequence. Our central IT people supply desktops
with passworded BIOS settings and HD-before-DVD boot sequence.
They also physically lock the cases. Killjoys.

There would also be no need for admin privileges - something that
blights system package management systems like apt and rpm.

Is it also true that in the very near future PCs will have some
kind of trusted boot system? So that alternate operating systems
would require signing (or I read something about a signed mini-
bootloader being developed to possibly get round this...). Will
that effect live DVD boots? That could be a pain...

  The disadvantages:

Loss of total control - we wouldn't know exactly what OS the
programs were going onto, so documentation might look wrong.

Binary compatibility - how can you ensure your binaries work
with assorted Linux versions? That might be the show-stopper
here, although I'm pretty sure I've recently installed Linux
software from one-size-fits-all binaries. Would the only
compatibility be to do with libc and the kernel? I envisage
practically everything being on there, including things like the
  Qt library and a JVM.

There would be a need to re-tool all the osgeo-live development
  chain, and write an installer.

There would be three versions - Linux, Windows, Mac (or four if
anyone wants to compile for OpenSolaris...)

I just think there's greater longevity and value in the
  distribution of a collection of ready-to-run, run-anywhere
packages than a live boot disk these days.

  Thoughts?

[Live-demo] Getting OSGEO LiveDVD copies.

2012-09-17 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)

All,

I've been charged with getting a hold of any OSGeo conference resources
available. Main focus is getting some of the LiveDVDs on hand for a local
conference (if possible)

What's the best approach to getting some of the LiveDVDs pressed for our
conference? What's the typical turnaround time and costs on getting some of the
LiveDVDs.

Our local MN GIS/LIS conference dates are Oct3 - Oct 5th.

Thanks

Bobb

[Live-demo] Thoughts on how to include support information on the Live DVD

2012-09-12 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)

All,

I've been in a few discussions recently related to describing support options
for OSGeo software.

Are there any others with ideas about how to list support options for
application on the Live DVD (or as a companion piece?) I know this exists, but
is it of any use to figure out a method or methods for distilling these type of
listing down into Application pertinent listings for handouts at conference
(along with a LiveDVD)?

I would imagine that the listing would likely change at different time indexes
with respect to the LiveDVD releases.

Thanks

Bobb

Re: [Live-demo] Thoughts on how to include support information on the Live DVD

2012-09-12 Thread Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul)
Cameron,

Agree wholeheartedly, but this is a recurring question coming up from anyone
interested in trying out (any) Open Source software. It's also (in my opinion)
a big piece of the Software sales task. Are those lines in the overviews
describing support coming from the support registry? I know the stuff for
GeoMoose was handwritten (by me) for example, but that's only pointing at the
stuff our community knows about, shouldn't a piece of this be brought in from
the support registry as well and printed out directly in the overview as a
build process?

Putting out one or two pagers for each software package with some sort of
Support pointer is pretty much a necessity. I'm trying to explore a method
where the information can be maintained in one location while still enabling
the semi-update printing mechanism. I assume for example that I could write
something against this lookup service:

http://www.osgeo.org/search_profile

to pull information about particular packages,(like GeoMoose) etc: Is there
some sort of documentation or would I need to reverse engineer?:

GeoMoose support =
http://www.osgeo.org/search_profile?SET=1MUL_COUNTRY[]=7MUL_LANGUAGE[]=8MUL_TECH[]=00088http://www.osgeo.org/search_profile?SET=1MUL_COUNTRY%5b%5d=7MUL_LANGUAGE%5b%5d=8MUL_TECH%5b%5d=00088

Is there some sort of registry to let the service operators know that I'm using
it in this fashion? Is there an opportunity here to set up a next gen version?
Is there a method to pull from this database a XML feed possibly, for syncing
purposes?? I bet some of the registrants might not want this though, but who
knows.

I may be able to secure some funding for some sort of digest output for this
type of online service, or possibly OSGeo thinks that it's better left up to
OSGeo to provide (that's where the information was collected after all).
Either way, I wouldn't be interested in attempting anything in a vacuum unless
it's a sanctioned process.

Bobb

Bob,
I believe we have support questions covered as each Project Overview has a line
describing support options for that package.
I wouldn't want to replicate this information as it would become a maintenance
problem to keep the information maintained in 2 locations.
