I've cleaned up the test code and have been able to complete mvn test with
current Sun, gcj, openjdk, and Apache Harmony JDK's on Linux. Haven't tested
Oracle, IBM or tested with earlier JDK's on this iteration.

Before we cut the release I'd like to add an pattern converter that
cuts off the leading x number of dot-delimeted loggers. The one there
now gives you x number of trailing dot-delimited loggers (this is
similar to chainsaw's ability to truncate the logger). Should be quick.
