Hello,

I think a page on the wiki collecting download links and links to the
release notes would be best as it can be maintained by all of us. The
we will link from the side bar to the release note page.

@Phil: As you work mostly on the wiki. Do we want to do it this way?

[Lubuntu-desktop] Creating alternate ISOs, 64bit ISOs, etc. (status update)

I'm at the "I need a few hours of playing with all this stuff before I
do anything even semi-official" stage right now. I'm not thrilled with
the way the current Lubuntu ISO is built, but until I have a better way
fully working and tested, I'm not in a position to complain about it
(Julien and I have been having some email discussion on this topic).

If I get to the point where I have a working fully automated process to
create Lubuntu ISOs, I can then certainly also build variations of them,
including an alternate installer and a 64bit Livecd installer CD. If I
reach that point, I would probably aim for also creating weekly or even
daily automated ISO builds of Lubuntu for test users as we approach
closer and closer to release of Lubuntu 11.04, and making them available
for download. How quickly I get to that point... remains to be seen!

Lubuntu is a hobby, fun, spare time thing for me, and I need to make
sure it *stays* that way... so I will make *no* promises about when I
might be ready to do this for other people. So please be patient :)

Jonathan

Thanks Rafael for the tests, very interesting.
I'll try to run those tests on a couple of machines to see if I have the

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] "get lubuntu" on Lubuntu website

2011-02-17 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hiyas Rexmo,

we have recently gotten someone on board to help Julien with the building of
iso's, once they get things sorted I'm sure that an alternate 10.04 iso is
not impossible. Please do remember that the dev team are few, and there are
lots of you good people running and installing lubuntu, pulling one of the
devs off development eats into their precious time. But I've asked them if
one of them who I know can do iso building could find the time to make an
alternate iso for 10.04.

Hi Boss and Jonathan, it seems a reasonable request, I know that your time
is limited. Especially with the push for 11.04, if you could spare the time
to make it for 10.04, which we're supporting as an LTS I think it would be a
decent use of your precious time.

Regards,

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Benchmarking of Lubuntu themes

2011-02-17 Thread (Rafael Laguna)
Ok. I have data from THIS year. I've made right now, and I must say
that this is a good practice when you design a new theme, the thing is I
didn't believe that I must demostrate this results, but there's no
problem. Please, check this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/133108/gtkperf/gtkperf.html

About creating my own test and add to that suite, I don't think that
Matthew (and the other crew) would like to include a specificly
eyecandy-meter as GtkPerf is within a hardware performance tester, I
think it's out of context, And I'm not a coder (well, not now), I'm a
designer, and I design visual interfaces, so yes, I know what kind of
tools I must use for my work, and I sure you that GtkPerf does its job
really well.

Of course, you must explain what kind of machine you're using for all
themes (obviously you can't test in different machines a part of them),
you know that enabling Compiz accelerates a lot the averages,
gtk-window-decorator is faster than metacity, etc. A lot of questions.
Is it relative? I think it's not, because GtkPerf is being used since
2005.

I'm not going to talk more about this, I think it's everything clear.
Now make your analisis and choice.

Regards.

PS. I want to apologyze if my words were missunderstood by somebody and
my reaction is too emotional about this issue.

I'm not convinced that GTKPerf is really the right tool, or that it
measures the kids of operations that users commonly use in Lubuntu, in
the proportion that they generally use them. But I am not a GUI expert
at all! If you think GTKPerf *is* the appropriate tool, that's fine, I
defer to your knowledge in the area of themes... please go ahead and use
*that* to do some repeatable and documented testing of themes in LUbuntu
in 2011, and document both your method and you results, and then we'll
have something useful to work with :)

If you feel the PTS lacks a suitable test for theme performance, and
that theme performance is something it will be useful to measure, then
my suggestion would be that you develop such test, and get it added to
the Phoronix Test Suite, so the whole community benefits from it! As I
am sure you know, there is no need to run the whole PTS, we can select
just one or a few tests that reflect what it is that we want to measure.

My apologies about being so"explicitly scientific". But, don't you think
that Phoronix suite is a bit heavey just for testing GTK themes? Which isn't
really its purpose (I don't really need to know the speed of my chipset,
just working over it with different themes), I'd preffer to do that with a
tools specifically designed for that, that uses Cairo for rendering controls
and other widgets, like GTKPerf does.

Agreed.

Because we need good data, and this blog entry is from back in 2008, it
is not really useful in 2011. Software changes quite fast in the Linux
and Ubuntu world, so three years is a long time.

Therefore, I suggest that you run a decent set of benchmark tests in
Lubuntu, for each theme of interest, and document exactly how to run
them along with you results (so that others can verify the results).
Then, we will actually have some appropriately current and relevant test
data to compare :)

You may find some of the benchmarks in the Phoronix test suite useful to
you as you do this research. See http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/

Thanks for caring enough about being "scientific" to do this testing,

Jonathan

[Lubuntu-desktop] How to file a Ubuntu bug report (was: Re: Disk utility (palimpsest) bug )

How to file bug reports in Ubuntu is documented at:

  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Basically you (usually) run

  ubuntu-bug PACKAGENAME

where PACKAGENAME is the name of the package containing the software
with the bug in it.

In this case, the program with the bug in it was (apparently)
palimpsest, so you can check what package palimpsest is in by doing:

  dpkg -S $(type -p palimpsest)

which outputs:

  gnome-disk-utility: /usr/bin/palimpsest

So, the package concerned is gnome-disk-utility.

Therefore, the way to report a bug against palimpsest is to type the two
words

  ubuntu-bug gnome-disk-utility

and then do what it says.

Please be sure to provide full information in your report about exactly
what version and flavour of Ubuntu you are using, and also describe in
detail the specific steps needed to reproduce the bug.

Thanks,

Jonathan

How about Sourceforge for the downloads?

In fact, no so long ago i had a lot of problems finding the Lubuntu 10.04
torrents... it would be great having a download site.

I think this should be the correct link:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-disk-utility/

Or simply search on bugs.launchpad.net

[Lubuntu-desktop] "get lubuntu" on Lubuntu website

2011-02-17 Thread Duy Hung Tran

Hi,

I notice that on Lubuntu website, in "get lubuntu" section the "release
notes" link takes us to Lucid release notes instead of Maverick.

I remember that someone suggested before that we should have a specific
download page, we could put links to current and older versions of
Lubuntu iso and torrent files. Maybe someone wants to download the older
versions or maybe they don't know that they could get torrent files in
the wiki page.
