Hi,

I just created a new testing ISO. This is not an Alpha, but just a
snapshot of the current work to be able to test more the new features.
Like others Alpha, you should be aware that it's not considered stable,
see warnings for Lucid Alpha :

Pre-releases of Lucid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Changes seen the Alpha 2 :
* Main changes in the seed :
 - chromium for the browser
 - gnome-mplayer for the videos
 - network-manager for the network
* New artwork made by Rafael Laguna. It's not the final theme, but it's
quite complete, so we can test with a non standard artwork. And I like
it :)
* A new session (Lubuntu-Netbook), which launched lxlauncher. You need
to logout, select Lubuntu-Netbook session instead of Lubuntu, and enter
login ubuntu without password.

Known bugs:
* pcmanfm2 is not the default filemanager yet, it need more integration
to be usable. It is still available by using pcmanfm2
* If you test on a USB, the first screen will freeze for a moment when
you click on Try Lubuntu Just wait, it will continue as normal.
* Bug reported during testing :

Currently booting, will let you know in 3-4 hours whether a fresh install
is a success or not.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] New testing ISO 20100215

2010-02-15 Thread Mike Nokel
Hi!
It's great! Nice artwork! Respect for including such applications as
hardware drivers, printing, languages by default. It now looks very
user-friendly.
However, there are some minor problems:
1) a lot of errors when changing screensavers. It can be solved by creating
directory /usr/share/backgrounds by default.
2) as was discussed earlier when clicking Desktop Session Settings the tab
Desktop should be opened, not Interface.
3) why have you choosen xfburn to include? I think that the most popular
area for installing LXDE (and of course Lubuntu) are netbooks and they just
don't have any CD/DVD-ROMs... In my opinion, it is unnecessary.

I have tested on my netbook HP 1233 - everything is working perfectly, and
using by default 110 Mb out of 1Gb is impressive (with Ubuntu 9.10 mini.iso
+ LXDE it uses after startup nearly 155 Mb). However, if there is xsplash I
haven't seen it, may be because of my videocard (Via Chrome9), I don't know.

I have also tried to run livecd on my notebook Asus M51TR. However, all that
I have seen was Lubuntu logo for approximately 1 minute after what there
came a kernel panic. I'll try to find solution but exactly now I don't know
why it is happening so.

In conclusion, I would like to say that it looks perfect and amazing. Thank
you!

Regards,
Michael.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Feedback new testing ISO 20100215

2010-02-15 Thread Leszek Lesner
Hi,

this version looks very promising. Nm-applet is working fine. The LXDesign
Theme is really a very cool clearlooks theme. Very good work !
Chromium is running its first run wizard if clicked. Perhaps we should ship a
preconfigured version with bookmarks and set it as default browser (its telling
me that it isn't yet).
Hmm... acpi=off in the livecd boot parameters ? I guess a temporary fix due to
hal removal isn't it ?
The next thing I noticed. There is currently no visible gnome-power-manager
icon in the systray of the panel (as it is started automatically but I don't
see any icon but can click on it I guess it is a panel problem). Next thing
gpicview should it be in the panel menu under graphics ? (somehow the graphics
submenu seems strange containing only 1 app)
My XFMultimedia Keys for Volume up/down mute is not working (eeePC 701).
xfce4-volumed should fix this or setting the keys in the openbox config and
creating a script that does volume up/down and mute (if you don't want to have
the fency notify-osd)

The last thing that we might include (only a suggestion) is a tweaked
/etc/sysctl.conf for Netbooks:
# Delay real write to disk
vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=1500

is crucial for this. Making the system visually faster.

Here a suggestion (also for all testers) set the panel size to 24 and the icon
size to 22. This way the panel here (on eeePC 701) looks much better.

Overall well made promising future with pcmanfm2 I hope ;)

Ok, i built up an old System with Pentium (i don't know if II or IV,
360 MHz) and 128 MBytes of RAM. It Takes very Long to boot and it
First seems like the pc wouldnt respond any more, but about 10 minutes
with Black screen you can see the panel and the Cursor- no Desktop and
no icons there. I didnt realize the arrow-Symbol to be the One for
network, maybe we should use another one. The System itself is
extremely slow, but thats the hardware (im just used to my 4gb RAM:-))
maybe we could use something else for the graphics , like kolourpaint
or so. The People we aim at are used to ms paint, and what we offer
them in lubuntu is too complicated. Ill go on in testing and ill write
again later. Have a nice time, Jo

It is simply plymouth (yeah Fedora invented it and Ubuntu is now
using it too). Seeing only the blue bar is a indicator that your
graphicscard is not supported well enough.
In the final version nvidia (thx to nouveau) ati (open ati driver)
and intel will show a nice splash screen.

Other than that, I like it, running it in a VBOX with 384 RAM,
everything seems snappy. Will do further testing and post any bugs I
find later.

Thanks Julien.

That’s a similar rig to the one I’m using to test on. It’s more than
likely a PII CPU at that speed, by the way.
Have you tested sound yet, I had to install a driver as on mine.
Interesting running with minimal resources isn’t it. :)

Have fun!

If you run hardinfo it will tell you what CPU you have along with other
useful (and not so useful) information.

System Tools System Profiler and Benchmark

It might be interesting to compare the benchmarks from that program.

I wonder, isn't lubuntu's target mainly old hardware, as netbooks have
it's UNR? or if we want it to be so netbook, maybe a the UNR opengl
menu (which I love by the way) could be somehow attached do
LXDE/openbox, instead of gnome/metacity? of course only as something
to launch deliberately on purpose (maybe an icon suggesting to try it
could be placed on desktop),not by default? I mean: defaultly lubuntu
would be a regular lightweight desktop, but it could be turned into
UNR-like system based on LXDE easily?

I think that would just add extra clutter on the CD, meaning a longer
download time on a slow connection. I think packages, etc. should be kept
to the absolute minimum required to provide a functional system.

But as feature freeze is on February 18th, I would like to have a first

sunday (with maybe a testing iso with them), and we will have 1 week +

Could the topic at #lubuntu be changed to reflect this, it still has a

However, I could not seem to find a way to configure the wireless card.
That is when I checked, and the distro is not detecting either of the two PC
cards in the system. So no report on browser speed.

The system did not automatically mount a flash drive. I was able to mount
manually.

Sound does work; I was able to play an ogg file via mplayer off of the
flash drive.

Hope this helps.

VERY nice! Looks (and feels) more and more professional. It's shaping up
nicely. Congrats.

Hi.
in my opinion solid colour panels look really, really awful. but I
agree that maybe on mobile devices too dark colours may be bad, but
again - bright are bad for old CRT screens, especially with
refreshment 85Hz and lower. Maybe it whould be sth like oldschool
windows grayness, but aesthetically shaded, instead of that ugly
solidness? but still I think it's more of an art-design, that
technical matter.
and about multi-panel idea - I always make lower panel just launcher
for stuff, so it may be auto-hiding and big (for easier tracking of
icons on netbooks), sth like a very simple dock-launcher?

I always auto-hide the panel anyway so I’m not really bother about it’s
looks as such.
Setting it to Solid colour (with Opacity) impressed a couple of people
though.

for me a solid colour associates with ascetic ultra-simple
primitivness. especially when it's gray. but well, that's a matter of
taste. I just love eyecandies, and I belive most people do - the
question is, where is the limit of a good taste.

;)

I don’t know where the limit is but, I rather liked the pink wallpaper in
the karmic version :)

Hello guys,
Im new at Lubuntu and mailinglists, but not for Ubuntu and Linux.Im
following the mails for some time now...I joined you guys because I have
very old laptop that is almost the same like discribed below and Xubuntu
was a bit too slow for me.I experience the same things as discribed
below.Very slow boot (usb1) and many graphical glitches when
booting. After like 20 minutes I tried to install it but the shortcut
didnt respond. Not really a surprize but I think it isnt the way it meant
to be. If you guys have any questions I could test with my laptop please
ask them.Just like sound and stuff...Im not sure this is the way to use
a mailing list, but you guys look to be very nice.

Keep up the good work !

Did you manage to get Lubuntu installed?
Did you use this version (the latest)

Thanks for the report.

However, there are some minor problems:
 1) a lot of errors when changing screensavers. It can be solved by
 creating directory /usr/share/backgrounds by default.
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xscreensaver/+bug/129769

 2) as was discussed earlier when clicking Desktop Session Settings
the tab Desktop should be opened, not Interface.
It's part of the pcmanfm2 integration, should be fixed at this point.

 3) why have you choosen xfburn to include? I think that the most
popular area for installing LXDE (and of course Lubuntu) are netbooks
and they just don't have any CD/DVD-ROMs... In my opinion, it is
 unnecessary.
There is also old hardware with old CD burner. It's pretty common to
have a CD/DVD burner by default :)

I have tested on my netbook HP 1233 - everything is working perfectly,
and using by default 110 Mb out of 1Gb is impressive (with Ubuntu 9.10
mini.iso + LXDE it uses after startup nearly 155 Mb). However, if
there is xsplash I haven't seen it, may be because of my videocard
 (Via Chrome9), I don't know.
It's now plymouth which is used. It required kernel mode-settings,
available for ATI, Intel and for Nvidia via the nouveau driver. If it's
not available, you should fallback to a blue progress bar.

I have also tried to run livecd on my notebook Asus M51TR. However,
all that I have seen was Lubuntu logo for approximately 1 minute after
what there came a kernel panic. I'll try to find solution but exactly
now I don't know why it is happening so.
That will be interesting to test with a Ubuntu daily build, to see if
it's not a general problem for Lucid.

Julien Lavergne

with that? you know what everyone will say!

It is simply plymouth (yeah Fedora invented it and Ubuntu is now using it
too). Seeing only the blue bar is a indicator that your graphicscard is not
 supported well enough.
In the final version nvidia (thx to nouveau) ati (open ati driver) and intel
will show a nice splash screen.

It's also the case for any Vbox users, because if I understand right,
Vbox driver is not KMS capable inside the guest. You can test the
plymouth theme only on a real system.

 One more thing...

The connected ICON for Network Manager is two arrows, one up the other
down, which persdonally to me does not indicate a network connection.
Can we change this back to the default one of two computers? it
doesn't even look like a network manager this way, or at least even
the ubuntu one where it looks like two sockets plugged in...

You should file a bug against elementary icons
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/elementaryicons), maybe they have a
good reason to do it that way.
