Well, it's no rocket science, really ;) Give it a try, maybe you're going to
enjoy it ;)

Now lubuntu-desktop resides in the official repo so you no longer need the
add-apt-repository magic... ;)

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] apport hooks

2011-05-17 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi,

you can try making a bootable USB with Ubuntu mini-ISO, install a
commandline system then apt-get install lubuntu-desktop.

You can also try upgrading your existing 10.10 install.

Regards!

Correct. *And* the resulting install will likely be unusable due to the lack
of free space.

That's pretty lightweight; can you name any common desktop or laptop i386

I'm not sure is it common or not, but many early netbooks have ridiculously
small drives. Some Asus EEE models have 2GB SSD. Hewlett Packard 6720t
features just 1 GB SSD (I'm shocked!!!)

No it can not. Tests done on alpha3 show that the system requires at least
2000 MB ("decimal" M) just to install with almost no free space left. Too
bad Lubuntu is no longer lightweight in terms of disk footprint.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] disk space need

2011-03-19 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
I just finished trying to install Lubuntu Natty Alpha3 on a very small
partition. The results are as follows:

   - with 1800 MB, the installer fails with "not enough disk space"
   - with 1900 MB, the installer reports success, but after rebooting it is
impossible to log in to the X environment: the screen blinks, and I'm
presented with the login screen once again. In a text-only terminal
(Ctrl+Alt+F1 works normally) I'm able to login, but further work is
impossible. "df -h" reports no free space at all.
   - with 2000 MB, the installation and log in both succeed, but "df -h"
reports just 70M of free space, which is IMHO well below minimum required to
   do anything substantial.

Thus, I think 3 GB disk is probably the _practical_ minimum for a Lubuntu
Natty system. Too bad it almost doubled since 10.04 :(

Regards,
Mikhail Maksimov

PS The installer's disk editor uses "decimal bytes" so an "MB" in my report
should be read as 100 bytes. If the disk is 2*(1024^3) bytes, you'll get
some 70*(1000*1000) bytes more to work in Natty, provided the system has
enough RAM to not use swap partition :(

[Lubuntu-desktop] Natty Alpha3: login screen nuisance

2011-03-07 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hello all.

When logging in to Lubuntu Natty Alpha3 there's a small nuisance: in the
bottom-right corner of the login screen, below the "exit" button, a
strange-looking triangle is displayed.

It proves to be a window resize handle: after it gets dragged via mouse, the
whole login screen is resized as if the "screen" is "window", leaving black
background "outside" and producing weird artifacts on the blue waves
lubuntu-style background "inside".

I'm able to log in normally, so it's definitely not a stopper bug, just a
nuisance.

Sincerely,
Mikhail Maksimov

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Boot problems with Natty Alpha ISOs

2011-03-07 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hello everyone.

Natty Alpha3 boots normally on the box in question, so I guess the problem
was caused by some unidentified minor flaw in the build process for alphas
1&2, silently corrected by the new automated build process for
alpha-20110228 and alpha3.

Aftermath:

   - the CD with all the four alphas (1, 2, 3 and 20110228) are perfectly
readable on both my "main" machine (the one where the discs were burned) and
"test" box. "dd if=/dev/cdrom.|md5sum" results are as expected *on
   both systems*.
   - the main machine boots normally from all the four CDs
   - the test box rejects alphas 1&2 (BIOS does not recognize them as
bootable) but boots normally from the other two alphas.

Thank you all for help.

Sincerely,
Mikhail Maksimov

[Lubuntu-desktop] Boot problems with Natty Alpha ISOs

2011-03-04 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, all.

I've got a Pentium-IV box to test Lubuntu on. However, I cannot boot it from
alpha1 or 2 liveCDs. The discs are being rejected by BIOS reporting
"NON-SYSTEM DISC PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISC AND PRESS ENTER". However,
Lubuntu 10.10 and Natty alpha-20110228 liveCDs both boot normally.

I've installed 10.10 to the machine, then checked, double-checked and
re-checked again the two alphas that do not boot. Both unbootable CDs are
perfectly readable and the checksums are correct (once again, I'm checking
it on the system that refuses to boot from them), so I assume it is not a
hardware (cd-rom drive vs. cd-rom disc) issue. The BIOS is proven to be
capable of booting from cd.

I'm willing to do further testing but cannot think of anything to check. Any
suggestions?

Regards!
Mikhail Maksimov

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] A small suggestion: Gparted

2010-10-22 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, list.

+1 for adding Gparted to the LiveCD. Without it, LiveCD is pretty useless
when you need to rearrange your disk prior to installing.

BTW, on a minimal box with just 128 Mb RAM gparted failed to start off
SystemRescueCD 1.6.1, maybe Lubuntu can perform better on such boxes.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Lxde-list] Lubuntu 10.10 released

2010-10-13 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Well, you don't have to remove the (Gnome) desktop, there's an option to
just not install it. Please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall for
details. I believe that if you use Ubuntu alternate CD instead of mini.iso
there's still an option to install a minimal system.

One difference (not so big IMHO) between Lubuntu CD install and minimal
install is eth0 not being nm-managed after a minimal install. Maybe there is
something else, not sure.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Binding actions to desktop power button

2010-10-08 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, list.

When polishing Lubuntu installtion on a laptop, I've changed lubuntu-rc.xml
to link lubuntu-logout invocation to the power button keypress (). However, on an old yet ACPI-capable desktop system
this does not work, if I get it right, desktop's power button is not a
"button" rc.xml binds to but instead generates a different type of event
processed elsewhere.

Is there an easy way to bind to ACPI "power button" event instead of
keyboard "power button" event?

Mikhail Maksimov

You got my idea, I was talking about buying a distro's CD with a
nice (thanks Rafael!) image printed on it, wrapped into a nice (thanks

[Lubuntu-desktop] Finding Lubuntu-related information

2010-10-06 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, list.

I always have trouble finding some vital information regarding Lubuntu.
Maybe it's just me, but it takes definitely more than a couple of
mouseclicks to find out, e.g., the status of latest testing iso, its
version, release date, download location, etc. Also, I've seen a link to IRC
logs somewhere, but cannot find it again, and googling for "lubuntu irc log"
does not show the required item on the first page, you really have to know
that there's one site for publishing logs for all ubuntu-related channels,
and search for _ubuntu_ irc logs, then navigate to the selected date and
channel manually...

IMHO such "small navigation problems" may cause newcomers to not actively
join the team. It may even happen that a would-be tester not do any actual
good just because he/she does not find the latest beta! I've just updated
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Testing with minimal info regarding beta2,
however I believe it can be further elaborated. And probably beta1-related
part should be removed. Huh, and probably the news section of
lubuntu.netcan also be updated with beta2 info.

I'm not really good at writing human-readable texts, and I just don't have
any more time at the moment. Is anyone willing to add more updates to
lubuntu sites?

Regards!
Mikhail

PS Are the command to md5sum the CD and the checksum on h
ttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Testing
correct
for beta2? Please double-check.

[Lubuntu-desktop] 10.10 beta installer memory requirements

2010-10-03 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, all.

I was testing the 10.10 betas on a low-spec machine and found that, for
both versions, with 256 Mb RAM the Live CD session starts normally, but
launching the installer kills the system in a creative way: everything
disappears except the wallpaper and mouse pointer (I mean, menu, installer
icon, lxtask that I started earlier), however Ctrl+Alt+F(n) works and from a
text console "ps ax | grep ubiq" shows nothing, the installer process is
gone.

lxtask says I have 243 MB of RAM installed, top says I've got 249844k total
memory. AFAIK swap partitions get used silently by Live CD if present, so I
cleared the partition table before running tests.

Adding another 128 Mb stick to the box solves the problem, so I believe it
really is the RAM amount that matters. Unfortunately all my 32 and 64 Mb
sticks fail so I cannot be any more precise.

Thus the current beta does not seem to be installable with "not less than
160 Mb" as stated in the wiki. I'm wondering if it's permanent, or just the
"beta effect" which may get fixed when and if the "install" menu item works,
not just the "try" one.

If anyone can confirm or correct my findings it is good to have it all
documented in the wiki.

Sincerely,
Mikhail Maksimov

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] kidnapping

2010-08-18 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, list.

Personally, I always think a well-structured and comprehensive text document
is ways better than a bright set of icons linked somewhere. IMHO the front
page of Lubuntu wiki looks good enough and we should focus on the text
content of the documentation, not with bells and whistles, uhm, icons.

Just my two cents.

Regards!
Mikhail

PS The icons of Uruguay Team page do consume the valuable _height_ of my
widescreen laptop, about twice as much as Lubuntu wiki navigation. Anyway,
1366x768 is not convenient for me :(

that 'solution' does not fix the default behavior of NM to not manage
interfaces defined in /etc/network/interfaces. I think it may enable the
whole NM management system when and if it is somehow turned off (screwed

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] NetworkManager bug in Lubuntu?

2010-08-03 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Update: both Ubuntu and Lubuntu installed from their respective 10.04 CDs do
not have any eth0-related entries in /etc/network/interfaces. Lubuntu
installed from 10.04 mini iso does have the usual:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

which causes NetworkManager to not manage eth0 by default. Looks like we
need to update the instructions...

managed by NetworkManager.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] NetworkManager bug in Lubuntu?

2010-08-01 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Yorvyk,

for me the problem reproduces on all three Lubuntu installations I
have at hand: an old P4-based desktop system and two notebooks,
ThinkPad X61 and Lenovo G450.

As Julien noticed, this is a known misbehavior of NetworkManager,
documented on the Debian wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkManager,
under "Wired Networks are Unmanaged"). There's also a bug in Debian
tracker, http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=530024.

Were those many installs of yours done via Lubuntu CD, or via minimal
installation (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall)?
If the problem occurs only when doing minimal install, we have to
update the instructions.

Regards!
Mikhail

Thanks, 'xscreensaver-command -lock' works just fine for deliberately
locking the screen. Is there an easy way to get the screen locked in

[Lubuntu-desktop] NetworkManager bug in Lubuntu?

2010-08-01 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, list.

Lubuntu Lucid installed from mini.iso seems to be affected by a bug in
NetworkManager (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=530024):
the wired network interface is not managed by NetworkManager by
default. Does anyone know if this also happens when installing from
Lubuntu CD?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu and openjava-jre

2010-07-09 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, Daniel.

I've experienced that dreadful "no sound and no errors" issue with at
least two different lubuntu installations (an old P4-based system and
a powerful x-series Thinkpad). Try starting alsamixer and un-muting
some channels using "M" key.

You might want to install graphical mixer control, but the commandline
alsamixer is just fine if all you want is un-mute the soundcard.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Error on http://lubuntu.net

2010-03-06 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, all.

I get the following messages when trying to save a comment in lubuntu.net blog:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function drupal_submit_form() in

Is it hard to fix? There are other comments on the page, so maybe it's
something broken by a recent update? Well, just a guess...

install midori, then reboot, start & measure - is this correct?

[Lubuntu-desktop] Broken link on lubuntu.net

2010-02-12 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Dear all,

I've found a broken link on lubuntu.net website. In the top area of
the start page, there is a section with "lubuntu is a faster, more
lightweight and [...] Please join us. Read more..." The "Read more..."
part is actually a link to http://lubuntu.net/about, which doesn't
exist. "About" link in the navigation area (top-right corner) leads to
http://lubuntu.net/node/1, which is apparently the right address. I
believe this is some kind of typo or misconfiguration and should be
corrected.

Sincerely,
Mikhail

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Browsers comparison on slow machine

2010-02-10 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Steve,

I simply cannot deduce the difference.

Fully updated my installation at about 7 AM GMT 2010-02-11. Used only
the default repos set by installer. Yet again freshly booted system
running just taskmanager and Midori reports 108 Mb RAM used.

Midori's help->about reports: "Midori 0.2.2, GTK+ 2.19.1, WebKitGTK+ 1.1.17"

Why is it eating 30 Mb of RAM more than on your system?

BTW, the 75 Mb usage with three pages seem unbelievably low. I'm going
to retry the tests having only 128 Mb RAM left in the system.

Mikhail

[Lubuntu-desktop] Browsers comparison on slow machine

2010-02-10 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hi, all.

I've resurrected an ancient PC to try Lubuntu. Celeron 400 MHz, 256 Mb
RAM and a 20 Gb PATA HDD. Here's my impression of running different
browsers on the specified hardware.

Testing method:
1. Install Lubuntu from Lucid alpha2 preview2 iso.
2. Install additional browsers (Chromium, Midori, Arora) from default
Lucid repos.
3. For each of the four available browsers, measure startup time and
memory usage on a freshly-booted machine (no executables cached), with
homepage set to about:blank (no downloading/rendering on startup).
4. For each of the four available browsers, try to load three tabs:
- open google.com, search for "Lubuntu";
- open my gmail account, navigate to a 47-letters thread in
lubuntu-desktop list ("default browser" discussion), hit "expand all"
and wait for all to expand;
- open http://www.rbc.ru, a news site in Russian with several Flash
banners on the start page.
5. Examine memory usage afterwards.

All memory usage numbers are listed as reported by Xfce4 Taskmanager
with default settings (ie, with "Show memory used by cache as free"
option active). These values are total numbers, including any memory
used by system. A freshly-booted system with just taskmanager running
reports 50..58 Mb RAM used.

Startup times and memory usage after loading (homepage is about:blank,
if applicable):
Firefox: 13 seconds, 85 Mb.
Chromium: 8..10 s, 81 Mb.
Arora: 12 s, 78 Mb.
Midori: 17 s, 108 Mb.

Common problems noticed:
1. Standard Gmail interface is slow. After initializing, it occupies
about half CPU capacity constantly. Occasionally, several seconds'
delays happen just as I type this text.
2. Flash literally kills everything. Several gtk-gnash processes take
up all CPU power the machine has. Several times, I had to wait for
more than 10 minutes (!) until taskmanager window gets redrawn and I'm
able to see memory usage.

Arora problem: never finished expanding the 47 messages thread. "Still
Working" message remains shown for more than 10 minutes, and there are
about 15 messages not expanded.

Firefox problem: while expanding 47 messages, gmail shows
"unresponsive script" warning at least once. Apparently, the script is
suspended until the user makes a choice, so the loading process needs
close user attention.

Midori: initially, gmail did not identify it as a fully compatible
browser and loaded a reduced "compatible" interface. However, after
changing the reported browser type to Firefox in preferences, no
problems encountered with the full version of gmail interface.

Memory usage with three tabs loaded:
Firefox: 150..160 Mb.
Arora: 175..185 Mb.
Midori: 175..185 Mb.
Chromium: 135..145 Mb.

Conclusion: on low-grade hardware, flash and script-rich pages are
painfully slow regardless of the browser. On less than 192 Mb RAM, you
are likely to experience swapping with several pages opened in any
browser.

Given the available options, my vote is for Chromium *and* disabling
flash by default. Best is to start playing flash only after the user
clicks on it, however I'm not sure if it's possible without hacking
the browser code.

Regards,
Mikhail

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Tested on MSI Wind U100

2009-12-10 Thread Mikhail Maksimov
Hello.

Just one thing I wanted to note: server GUI is a bad idea. If you want
server, you install server, if you want a workstation on low-grade hardware,
you install Lubuntu. If you have low-grade hardware to use as a server, you
definitely shouldn't be wasting the precious (and, oh, so limited!) RAM and
CPU resources on GUI instead of serving something.

If someone wants to have lubuntu desktop on server, there's always an option
of installing server then adding any desktop environment, or maybe
installing Lubuntu then switching to the server kernel. But I think all the
possible "mix" options should not be part of Lubuntu installer, nor should
there be a separate server+LXDE remix of Lubuntu (Ubuntu?)

Regards!
Mikhail

PS If you don't like vi, you can use nano, it's part of the server install
and it is WYSIWIG.
