Hi Julien, if we get a logging bot, the channel will be logged at all times. The logs would be searchable, like searching #ubuntu-beginners, their continuous log is held at, for an example, http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2010/07/15/ http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2010/07/15/%23ubuntu-beginners.txt That would give the availability to search through the logs. Not something an 'average' user would do, but would mean the whole of conversations are archived and searchable for those giving support when they have a I've seen that before, but do not fully recall all that is needed question. hi Leszek, my e-mail was a 'rough guide' to people wanting to see how applications behave. As you have stated, there is little chance of us getting a deffinative guide up but that was about the best the best I could think of. My asking that the application be run, may not have been clear that I meant On it's own to see what the various libraries etc. would take up. However it is something that would be useful for people to test against in the absence of anything better. I'd appreciate any further thoughts on how we may, in any way, let people know how to have a look at an application for consideration to be included in Lubuntu. Regards, Phill. If the library isn't included by default in lubuntu you need to add this library memory usage also (because it can't be shared between applications, when only one app uses it). The best way to check if an application is suitable is to grep an older pc and test it there. Speed + Stability are the far most important points that matter. But it may be good to test also starting different applications in parallel to watch if this slows down the application dramatically or not. And CPU usage Tasks: 134 total, 1 running, 133 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): *1.3%us,* Take a note of where the memory and CPU usage is (*bold*), then go to install the programme. If at this point it wants to bring in a lot additional parts, it is unlikely to pass the requirements. If it passes that step, then you can, if you wish install it [1] and reboot. then issue the *free* and *top* command again to ensure the new program is not 'eating up memory' or CPU usage Again CPU usage is important here. Memory usage might be also very high depending on which application you use (QT and KDE applications share there memory and reserve mostly more memory then they actually use) Start using the application for a little while then issue the commands again and you can see what it is using, both in memory and CPU time. Issuing those commands and looking at there output gives only a vague orientation on how this app might behave. This is definitely not an objective way to found out how an app behaves on low memory. Hi, That sounds like you need to clear the cache in Chromium (Options -- Under the Bonnet -- Clear Browsing Data) Ensure the Empty Cache is selected. I run with Chromium and have no problems, but if a browser does get a bit confused, (Chromium or Firefox) clearing the cache is the first step to getting it working again. Regards, Phill. Softmaker Office for Linux is neither free nor open source, but it is lighter and more agile than OpenOffice and delivers better compatibility with MS Office. It installs and runs well in Lubuntu. In any case, while I'm sure that porting Keynote to Linux would be relatively straightforward, I can't see Apple releasing the source code under the GPL or even making a paid version available. Hi, I've just recently taken on running a pub (bar), as the establishment is in need of a bit care and attention,I will not be available for the amount of time I used to be. I can, and will pick up on lubuntu tags on the forum area and continue to receive e-mail updates. For people like szcuzr, thanks for being there on the IRC channel. And the good news? Well, the new server system is planned for the middle of september. From what I have been told, not only will I still be able to host the aplha / beta iso's, but hopefully be able to be secondary source for the full 10.10.10 release. I cannot promise that, as we need to look into ensuring bandwidth etc. is controllable to ensure the server does not get 'melt-down'. Hi Julien, Sorry to haunt you, but a bit of good news :-) the down load to my computer and the upload to the server went well. It has been checked : the download has just finished, the speed was between 250-270, didn't get below 250 The download time from the server was about 35 minutes (beggars can not be choosers). The md5checksum is okay. I've added that server as 'Secondary Server' to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Developers when ever you wish to alter the links over, it is good to be switched :-) I've amended the notes for checking the iso and CD. Hi Julien, I added the ppa to my 10.04 version, upon booting it just seems to display a dark screen. I can log onto the system via Crtl-Alt-F2, which reports that X is running. I've used ppa-purge to back the ppa out, but will be happy to give it another try if there are any things you'd like me to check up on. (I've got to add, I'm very impressed with ppa-purge). Hi, Good news and bad news As in the time honoured fashion, I'll do the bad news first. My hard disk on piglet is dying, quite rapidly. I have all my backups etc, but transferring all my various partitions on to a replacement hard drive is going to take a little while. I'm planning to kick it all off Thursday 22 at about 10:00 UTC, so will be a little 'tied up'. The even worse news ... I'll be back !!! And now the good news for those who are sane, have better things to do etc. and are not on the Lubuntu desktop bugs mailing list, this one popped by a little earlier .. While evaluating boot charts (on armel) I just noticed that starting chromium entails a two second I/O block where it calls lsb_release twice. lsb_release is an utterly heavy program, since it invokes Python. If I eliminate this and hardcode DISTRO and RELEASE, I can halve the startup time from 2.2 s to just over a second. As that is on a 'decent' computer, it could make quite a difference to the less powerful ones. I'm very happy to say that it took only about three hours to be addressed and .. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+bug/608253 I echo the thanks for the speed at which Fabian at the Chromium team pushed the resolution out. If you'd like to get a hold of it to see the difference it makes, give it 24 hours to hit the daily build and add the daily ppa [1] I'm pretty sure it will be confirmed works. If you just want to pick and choose the core components then feel free to remove this package. I would make it for us as: *lxde*: This package is the meta-package for lubuntu; it is just a list of what to install. It is a design decision that all packages included in lubuntu-desktop depend on it, so as to be able to use * --no-install-recommends* option when the initial installation occurs, thus preventing non-essential programs being installed. If you just want to pick and choose the which components of lubuntu to use, this package can be safely removed. Am I somewhere near? Gtk2 themes can be found with any search engine, a couple of good places to head for free ones are http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2 http://www.deviantart.com/ (search for gtk), The preferences for the panel can be found by right-clicking on it, and selecting 'Panel Settings' (I always have mine at the top). I also run Deadbeef, but it is not in the repositries as yet so has to be maunally added (We can't include it by default). As you seem interested in art-work, themes etc. why not join the artwork area? Where they're up to is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork this mailing list will put you in touch with them. I'll put onto my list to get some documentation written up and posted on the adding / changing themes etc. (Unless some one already has some). OR if there is a way how to customize the looks of the netbook menu, you should make it easily accesible, cause I couldn't find it, and if I didn't - then I bet no newbie would either. Another thing that I think would be nice is that the top panel of the netbook desktop menu would be somehow always on top, I mean never covered with windows, and clicking on it while some window is maximized would minimize everything and let user jump to desktop same as one icon in the bottom panel does (and that one would be unnessesary then). BUT - as I have mentioned, there IS an icon in panel that makes user jump to naked desktop menu anyways, so that change is just an idea that is unlikely to do, as it's not needed. I guess i't somehow because I'm use tod UNR, there clicking on the left side of the panel worked like that. Oh, and non-netbook-menu matter; it would be GREAT if the standard black LXDE background of the bottom panel would be included. It looked just great, i don't understand why was it changed for such ugly gray one, but well - that's a matter of taste, and the general artwork looks really fine, so I guess it was part of a larger concept. Still, while customising I wanted to change the colour of the panel and found no alternative graphic, only the deafult gray one, or the possibility of plain and/or transparent colours. I belive such graphic weigths just a few KB, so wy not give people choice? And last but not least, I didn't see deadbeef in defaultly installed apps, there was still aqualung in there. Is it still supposed to be like that? and will the bottom panel be moved to top, and [minimise]/[maximise]/[close] buttons moved to the left corner of window, like in new ubuntu? I'm just curious about consistence of general ubuntu idea and the if that the iso from lubuntu.net is and up-to-date one, or shall I download newer one from somewhere else? Phew... Hi, If you need firefox, Open office etc., then maybe you should have a look at xubuntu? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu that is the lower resource version of Ubuntu (gnome) that includes the most part of it. Lubuntu is a departure from open office, etc. There is nothing to stop you installing *any* package into lubuntu, just bear in mind a couple of points: 1) The lubuntu team is very small, because of that: 2) You're on your own it is not working / breaks you system. Lubuntu does take everything I have thrown at it, that it is not to say you would have the same happy experience. Please just bear that in mind when you stray from the default applications. Please do not go complaining to us or others that you added 'this', 'that' and 'the other' to it and managed to break it. The team can only support a standard installation of lubuntu, if you wish to go 'play' and see how far you can get, make sure you have plenty of backups. *Altering lubuntu is *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. You are, however, welcome to do so at your own risk.* All the *buntu family allow you to do to it as you wish, just accept we cannot help you if things should go wrong. Regards, Phill. P.S. Chromium is still about the leanest browser, it may take a little more RAM up on entry, but requires less per new tab than ffox does. As the argument goes on, it will finish with HTML5 in a couple of years time, flv will not be an issue. Hi, with no votes against so far, i propose to put in a request for both IRC bots to be added in 24 hours; so, as they at weddings speak now, or forever hold your peace :-) It has been mentioned to me that we could (should) use #ubuntu-meetings for meetings, but until things settle down and we get full adoption, I do not see having the ability to host a meeting on #lubuntu as being a problem, it only adding an option. As always when I ask questions, I will take 'deafening silence' as an okay. I can see no negative side to #lubuntu that having the functionality that those two bots will bring. Anyone wishing to help with adding lubuntu specific factoids to the ubot please do say :-) (Oh, I'd better explain, a factoid is when you type in *!lxterminal* and the bot tells you where to get information on lxterminal). I have been informed that we can have the ubot2 added to #lubuntu if we wish. This would give access to a quick way of people getting information. I've got a couple of wiki people helping me with links etc. As they are not trivial edits, I feel uneasy to use that tag. Just so as everyone knows, I'm part of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BeginnersTeam/FocusGroups/Wiki/SoD2010 so, our own wiki area is a good one for me to get help on. As it is the aim of lubuntu to be adopted by Canonical, as per my previous posting I'd like to ensure we comply with their documentation standards. I'd appreciate any input as to what you'd like to see on there along with proof reading to ensure any spelling mistakes etc. are corrected. Hi gang !! I'm on the documents mailing list and much is going on with the various formats. As such, does anyone have any preferences re: I think Xfce may be willing to adopt Mallard, but I'm not sure what the situation is with KDE. The others I have even less idea about. in [1] How much do distributions like kubuntu, xubuntu and lubuntu derive their docs from the ubuntu team? Will it mean that they have to also convert to mallard? Or will they be converting the mallard back to docbook? As for the translations I think that until we know how much we risk messing up, we should not start doing too much. There are a lot of translators that have put in hard work, and it would be very annoying for them to have to do it again. So that is a potential regression that probably should be identified up front with some kind of fact-based analysis (5% of strings, or 50%?) that gives some idea of the extent of translation regression that may occur, at least to enable Ubuntu Translators to understand what kind of additional work to expect. If much of this can be avoided by writing a clever conversion script, then that should be identified as an important piece of work, it would seem. Hi gang, I'm sorry I'm a bit out of the loop on this one (I have the a2 iso, just like a couple of others, have not had chance to install it). Is the current work-around going to be: 1) wait for it to complain about the missing key when you update lubuntu 2) take a note of the key 3) use https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp#Key Servers to get it 4) remove the ppa from sources using Software Sources. (The gui does it better) 5) follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp#Keep Lubuntu up-to-date as if you had pre-beta3 of 10.04 (the cli does it better) I know adding a missing key using the MIT, removing and re-adding the ppa does work (I had a query on it in #ubuntu-beginners earlier for a different ppa). Is this an acceptable work-round for the alpha2 ? Before anyone starts screaming at me again about using cli - we *are *only* *on the alpha2. The reason I'm suggesting for us to use the MIT key-server is that the ubuntu key server is either poorly, over-worked or underpaid (or, like most of us - all three) as there has been a few instances when it has timed out recently reported. If some one could confirm this is about what they did (I'm not wanting to risk the ubuntu key-server being down as the fault is repaired, so for this work-round I suggest we use the MIT one). I'd like to get it onto the wiki area a.s.a.p. and confirmed for the people on the mailing list *Checking our cd's* If I do not hear to the contrary in the next 12 hours, I will put a cut down version of http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18t=94 onto the wiki page so that people can be sent there instead of my baby forum. Hi Bob, the 95% stall on install is a known 'bug'. I do not know how much RAM you have on the Dell, but a couple of pointers that may help from this problem... Then a perused through the bios setting and found the setting APIC Mode was set to Disabled. I changed it to Enabled and that seemed to do the trick and the thread http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1473819 I've seen it noted that it can take several hours on low RAM machines to do the final part of the cleanup. Neither Brasero nor Xfburn can put this image on a CD without screwing up that one file. And neither one warns me of the error. I wonder why it's always the same file? Anyway, my apologies.. I should have checked the CD as well as the ISO, obviously! There's something I won't forget to do ever again. :) Now if I can just get it to burn accurately, just once, I can start over and hopefully things will work better. Those instructions are solely for the 10.04 disk, if you are using a different installation method then the check sum will be different. If you pop over to the thread http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18t=94 that gives the 10.04 release, I would need to update it for the release levels for the alphas, or I could give you the instructions as to how to write them :p Possibly the md5 | cdrom command may be easier for people, as it only requires the md5 sum to check against. Hi Bob, If the CD is not burned at 4X speed, it can cause horrors. In 9.10 I could burn at that rate, in 10.04 I cannot. As a part of these 'funnies' that happen, one of the tech guys told me that he could not burn at 4X in 9.10 but can do in 10.04 . I have learned to 'cheat' and use CD-RW's or DVD-RW's which keeps the burn speed down. Oh, and I've used brassero etc., it seems to be a kernel issue but one that is really hard to nail down. Hi, as one who does not use gnome, my little two cents worth is that instructions should not be tied 100% to gnome. Whilst the vast majority use 'vanilla' ubuntu, there are other flavours. As ubuntu is ubuntu, should we be as aware of that as we are translations? Xubuntu, Kubuntu etc. Each of the flavours has translation teams and I'm sure some translators work on more than one flavour, the 'base' installation documents need to cover all that is common (grub, kernel etc) after that how does for example, the chromium browser team from ubuntu work with those from kde work with xfce, work with lxde etc ? I've seen some excellent wiki pages that put in the difference between gksudo and kdesu. One easy example for lubuntu (allbeit not a fully fledged ubuntu yet) is that it would be leafpad and not gedit that is the shipped programme for people to do that lower level of editing with. hi Goh, yes, there is, it is *not* a dell issue, as is clearly explained, also the work around for a bug that one of the devs https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/496435/comments/6 says is not fully tested, the consensus of those who are dealing with problems over at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1516153 is still to use still to use dpkg-reconfigure and not apt-get etc. I'm awaiting the guy who writes up a lot of documentation that we mere mortals use to refer to in order to have a chat with him, I have a strong sense that he will also shrug his shoulders and say that the grub team have messed up (again) and to continue to use the dpkg-reconfigure option. I recall that grub2 came out and totally broke RAID support. They have been playing catch up ever since. Given the chance, I'd use burg as it is more pro-active and re-active to problems. I really do not know why we are arguing over this? Grub 2 can cause major problems when there is more than one hard disk involved - that is beyond dispute. In 9.10 it cannot support RAID, with 10.04 we got a newer version that gave some RAID support, but they would not back port it, when 10.04 came out it had a big fall out with Win7. - that is still a 'work around'. Such a basic part of *nix should not need 'work-arounds', n00bs will not that there is one - It must be sorted out. Should not we be trying to help the OP, it is quite evident there is a problem and people get annoyed over having their computer in a non booting mode? Regardless of any sleek looking graphics, let us not fall into the trap that Microsoft did with Service Pack 2 for XP. When we do tempt people over to *nix, if their first introduction to it is a broken system they will not only never come back, they will tell everyone that *nix breaks computers. That is not acceptable, we are in the hands of the Grub people - so people should complain there and we should ensure that people asking why lubuntu does not work in such situations are clearly told that it is not a fault of lubuntu. Hi gang, I know the chromium team are working on in-built flash support, until that happens and lubuntu ships it, can I pop on the instructions from http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-enable-flash-support-for-google-chromium-browser.html over onto the wiki help area, i'm guessing 'Advanced Users' would be the place for it. Hi Mario, there have been issues with grub and multiple hard drives, this affects all ubuntu's (and also debian). OK, . it appears that having run dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and making the proper selections results in defaulting to the proper behaviour I will however try some different scenarios as time allows, and hopefully we can all monitor the behavior as development proceeds. So, if this behavior stands as-is, I'd guess reinstalling grub 2 needs to be done with dpkg-reconfigure rather than grub-install to ensure that the preferred behavior is saved as default. That certainly seems simple enough. I suggest you have a read of that bug report and try what it suggests. But from what I gather, he has installed the grub to the external disk. Naturally, there is no way the system be able to boot this up. It's the contray I think. This is a common mistake when you install Ubuntu to a USB device because by default Grub is installed to the first hard disk (/dev/sda). Ont he last screen of the installation process you need to click on the Advanced button and select the place where Grub should be installed and -in case of installation to an USB drive, you should choose that USB drive (eg /dev/sdb). In this case you can use that USB device to boot any computer. Failing to do that (i.e. using the default of /dev/sda), you'll need the USB device plugged in the computer for Grub to start (otherwise it will display an error). You can of course re-install Grub on the first hard disk if you want to get rid of the necessity to have the USB device plugged in in order to boot the computer from the (internal) first hard disk. I learned this from several mistakes in the past. In the case of the liveCD, a working network connection is required, since the PAE enabled kernel packages are not present on the CD. The X issue was, and is, flagged up on the 'stickies' area http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1503555 It is not as if it was a surprise ;-) On that sub forum area you will also be able to see just what the devs are planning to break, and what they have broken. If they break something real bad someone will pop on and give us a work-around. Apart from that, they keep well clear ;-) That's why I run the dev version of ubuntu and lubuntu it's easier to see if it is a lubuntu problem, or something in the main package. Regards, Phill. Hi Bob, yeah, as I'm still server hopping I've not fully re-configured things. I have manually authorised your log-in and removed you from the New-Users group which _should_ mean you can post without it ending up in the moderation queue (Although this can take a couple of attempts). Hi Steve, I'm not a 'mad' Compiz fan, and was some what surprised to find in the beta testing of 10.04 that it most certainly did run on my laptop. As I'm not a great fan of eye-candy I've not really 'messed' with it. But, as there has been a request, I guess it could live along with other not supported stuff. Hi, yeah, the 10.04 is okay, the previous banner was 10.04 ish? sorry to be hogging the mailing list over this. A banner 600 x 100 px with the logo either to left or right would be excellent, I can add the TWO lines of text (sorry that it mentioned three in an earlier posting) I'd be looking at having about 300 - 400px of the horizontal area to be able to put text into. To try and sum it up, the bottom right of your email has a logo, with lubuntu.net to the left of it, I'd like the logo on the left with whatever theme and an area to the right of it to put in the 'DOWNLOAD ME HERE!! and Scary development version text I can have a think of and use GIMP to put the text on (Yeah..., so my lubuntu has GIMP installed, I need it for work). The banner i had and gotten permission to use was really nice, so something like that would be excellent. I'll leave this on the mailing list as themes have to be decided upon by all the team, but a quick sketch up to bide me over until firm decisions are made would be appreciated.
