[Lubuntu-desktop] Audio players - some thoughts RFC
Which audio player to use must be about as controversial as which OS. While I believe they should be 'heard and not seen', others require them to run their computer. Benchmarks alone are not going to find the best solution but can narrow the field down. As Lubuntu is intended as a low resource OS, we need to find players that use as little CPU/RAM as possible while still retaining reasonable functionality. Some of us have, in the past, run various inconclusive tests. Before Oscillating Ocelot, or what ever the release after Natty Narwhal is to be called, we develop a standard benchmark for everybody to use. Basically this would involve everybody using the same music to carry out the measurements and also reporting the hardware used. In the tests myself, and others, have carried out it has become apparent that some players cope better in low memory environments than others. Depending on the source and codecs used some players use far more resources than others. While one may be very frugal with mp3 it's resource use can rocket with ogg, and vice-versa. Some players cope very well with about a dozen albums but struggle when they have to cope with 10,000 tracks. So what we need is a standard set of tracks, in different formats and bit rates, for everybody to test with and a standardised set of tests and measurements so as to give a consistent set of results across different hardware. Thoughts. -- Steve Cook (Yorvyk) http://lubuntu.net ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Lubuntu-desktop] Fw: [Lxde-list] update-notifier causes xscreensaver / gnome-screensaver snafu
Hi Dan, Begin forwarded message: Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2011 11:10:41 +0100 From: Dan Muresan danm...@gmail.com To: lxde-l...@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Lxde-list] update-notifier causes xscreensaver / gnome-screensaver snafu I've just discovered (after many painful hours of digging) that update-notifier somehow causes dbus to run gnome-screensaver, which of course competes with xscreensaver. I have no idea *how* update-notifier does it, but removing update-notifier.desktop from /etc/xdg/autostart solves the problem. Now, I prefer not to make system-wide changes. Is there a way (freedesktop, lxde, openbox or otherwise) to override autostart entries, or dbus session services, or to ban gnome-screensaver (short of apt-get remove)? This brings a larger question -- can we rely on gnome-screensaver never being started in a modern Linux distro? This is starting to look like a losing battle. I prefer x* to gnome-* any day, given the less-than-professional practices that surface so often in the Gnome team, but I was *very* tempted to replace xscreensaver with gnome-screensaver in /etc/xdg/lxsession/autostart. I am on Ubuntu Lucid (0.5.0-3ubuntu2, update-notifier 0.99.3), so maybe this is all outdated. Even so I would like to file a bug in launchpad, since this is an LTS release. Note that on Ubuntu, non-admin users don't see the problem since for them update-notifier doesn't start. As this is Lubuntu related I have forwarded it to the Lubuntu list lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Please file a bug on Launchpad, as 10.04 is an LTS version and has another couple of years life left. -- Steve Cook (Yorvyk) http://lubuntu.net ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I'll do that... though I'm not sure what component to file against. I'd file it against update-notifier initially and allow those with a bit more knowledge of these things to decide where the problem really lies. Make sure you add the tag lubuntu to the bug report. Regardless, some of the points I made were not Lubuntu, but LXDE-related, so I hope the list won't ignore my message? Even if update-notifier can be fixed, who guarantees that some other component in the future won't start gnome-screensaver and mess up xscreensaver? The dev team is quite small, so answers may be a bit slow but I doubt it will be ignored. But keep in mind that the average user will have expectations for their OS and that not everyone will use it only on older hardware (Lubuntu is too nice not to use it on modern hardware!) My main point is that Lubuntu should be for everyone and not just us tweakers and geekers. I want to be able to install it on anyone's computer and not have to worry about what it won't do for them. So my question is what dose the average user expect their OS to do out of the box? Pretend you are putting it on someone's machine. Maybe your mother, or the neighbor who has never used anything other than Windows. What will they expect? Don't pick on mothers. They expect it to look and behave like Windows, especially if they have been to classes at the local school or college. Here's my list: - be efficient (most overlooked by most OS) Define efficient. - handle music, video and Internet OK, although DVD's can be a problem any most basic OS's. - find anything on my local network Most people of the type you're talking about wouldn't no what a LAN is. - download and open files properly I'd love that on any OS. - let me use it with external monitors/TV as a basic media player (HDMI out) Had very few problems with desktop machines but, portables on the other hand. They seem to be either plug 'n' play or a royal PITA. - have basic office apps (even though I don't use them) OK. - allow basic personalization (LXDE's lack of menu editor is a bummer, but I don't fault anyone for that.) Again the sort of user you're talking about rarely customises their desktop beyond changing the wallpaper. Lubuntu has come pretty close to meeting my expectations. I've had to tweak a little bit and I might still be missing a few things here and there, but overall, I love it. The one area it blows everything else away is with it's efficiency. It seems like that's the most overlooked item in all the other Ubuntu variants I've used. In techie-speak, are there any use cases defined for this database? :) To me, language seems a slightly odd choice of primary sort key, especially since it is primary language only (some of us speak more than one)... and as long as I can communicate about with someone about Lubuntu in some language that we both know, I don't care all that much what their primary language is... I just want to communicate with them. Timezone info is on Launchpad anyway, assuming people set it (!), so it is currently just a click away from the WhoAreWe list. Do we need to duplicate that info on the wiki, and then update it in two places as we move around the world? Is the benefit worth the cost? Ordering by seniority or date added as it is now (longest-serving members at the top, new people add themselves to the end of the list) also has some value, as that is information which would be lost (well, except by laboriously looking back through wiki history) if the list were re-ordered at all. If we re-order, should a date-added column be introduced so that info is not accidentally lost? SUMMARY: This seems like a bike-shedding kind of a topic :) However, since you asked, I'd suggest order by date added -- in other words, leave it as it is. On Wed, 29 Dec 2010 23:22:47 -0500 Tim Bernhard ohiom...@gmail.com wrote: Here is my short list: 1. Installing from USB didn't work until I made the USB without storage. Isn't this a general Ubuntu problem. 2. Grub not updating after install. A cock-up with the installer where os-prober didn't get installed. 3. Chrome not opening downloads properly until I changed xdg-open. xdg-open does seem to be a mess in lubuntu and does need sorting 4. Having to learn how to add menu items to lxde. Can you give some examples, as this is probably programs not complying with the freedesktop.org standard. 5. Not being able to find my NAS from PCmanFM. A bit more information on this would be useful 6. Loosing some of my changes when Lubuntu updates. (Am I doing something wrong here???) Again, some more information would be useful. I'll admit that the list isn't too bad, but keep in mind that I had to spend a good bit of time researching and implementing the solutions. So the question is what is the ultimate goal for Lubuntu. I know you guys want it to be resource friendly. But who is it aimed at? The Linux geek who can tweak it or the average Joe who just want to be able to use it? Can it be resource friendly and not need tweaking? Is it just a matter of time to sort it out or a matter philosophy? The problem is, people, no matter how Lubuntu is set up out of the box not everybody will be happy. As an example, I can't do with the panel on the bottom of the screen so move it to the top before adjusting anything else. Really Lubuntu has to cope with both your average Joe and your average geek. The real problem, with all software, are those people that fall between the two groups. In this area there are again two groups. Those that would like to tweak but don't know how, so don't. The other is those that would like to tweak and don't know how, but do. These two groups are the ones we need to listen to in order to make things easier (more user friendly?). The main thing that comes from your missive is that Lubuntu needs to state it's goals louder and more clearly. Some distros hide their weaknesses behind 'shiny', a lot of distros derived from Lubuntu do this. Lubuntu isn't about 'shiny', it should be about functionality and this is what we shoul try and get across. [Lubuntu-desktop] Basics of Bug Triaging
Don’t forget, for those that are interested, that this is this evening (or whatever time of day it is in your time zone). On Wednesday, December 15th 2010 at 17:00 UTC we welcome Bug Control member Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi (devildante) for a class on the Basics of Bug Triaging. Support is important for this piece of software, because it's more complex than a standard desktop application. It's also important to have testers because it needs to deal with many different configurations and situations. Another advantage : lightDM doesn't depends directly on GNOME component, only the greeter (the login screen) who use have those depends. And there is already a greeter which is similar to the LXDM one (thanks PCMan :)) You can read more on lightDM on the homepage [1] or on the blog of the author [2]. You can also see the blueprint for inclusion in standard Ubuntu [3]. Also, I already plan to continue to maintain LXDM, so if lightDM is not ready for 11.04, we will have the possibility to switch back to LXDM. A lot of modern Windows users never ever even look at the command line have no idea how to use one - so a server that boots to nothing but a command line is going to be seen as scary and intimidating. For the smaller business, with out a computer expert, a GUI is what they need and why Windows Servers are used. I know one business where this software may be just the thing they’re looking for. They’ve been using OOo, Firefox and Thunderbird, on XP, for some time. They’ve been using Ubuntu on one machine for a few months and are considering moving all machines to it, so an Ubuntu based server with a GUI would compliment their IT needs very nicely. Zentyal makes a decent effort in this direction. A modern server will have gigs of RAM, a several-gigaHertz CPU and a graphics card, because you simply can't build a machine without these things any more. They picked a really lightweight desktop and stripped it right out to put Zentyal together, and that seems a good choice to me. That is basically the spec of the server they have, overkill for what it does I would like it if it were an optional install, to be honest, but it worked fine on a couple of test machines for me. -- Steve Cook (Yorvyk) http://lubuntu.net ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop Post to : lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Any thing HAL free as there seems to be no point in having HAL for just one program, could even be built into PcManFM The Any thing HAL free is actually limited to Brasero, I didn't find another good CD burner without HAL. TBH all my CD/DVD burning is done with k3b as this just seams to be the most reliable. I would like to see some discussion of the minimum, REALISTIC hardware requirements. It depends of the use, and sometimes the state of your hardware. It's not really easy to set an universal requierement, only experiments can help in this case. I was thinking more of the installation but now we have an alternate installer this is really a problem. Also a RSS reader might be nice, Liferea maybe. Ubuntu didn't have one, and Liferea is not really lightweight. Like Backup, if a good solution exist, why not. OK. Not a great problem for people to install if needed and I suppose there is probably some thing for Chromium that does this anyway. Lxpanel is a component which will be very difficult to remove, unless you have very very good reasons and a good benchmark.
