Really nice! Love the new look.

A question: I installed LibreOffice on top of beta1, and it's menu
fonts look horrible (tried Writer, Calc, etc..all the same). Any idea
how can I configure the libreoffice suite to look good under lubuntu?
Any tips?

Thanks

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Virtualbox and lubuntu-natty-alpha-20110228-i386.iso

2011-02-28 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Thanks Jonathan, I followed your settings and it booted. I use OSX
10.5 and VB 4.0.4.

In VB went to Settings -> System -> Motherboard: chipset to PIIX3 is
the default (left it that way), l set/checked the Enable IO APIC
checkbox as you suggested (it was unckecked by default), then under
System -> Processor the Enable PAE was unchecked (left it that way),
then under System -> Acceleration unchecked the Enable VT-x/AMD-V (it
was checked by default).

Thanks
Zoltan

[Lubuntu-desktop] alpha2 image boot problem

2011-02-13 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi Julien,

I tried installing alpha2 on virtualbox, it does not work (doesn't
boot). I usually install it (test it) as a fresh virtual box
installation before I put it on a disk partition as a stand alone OS.

I red the list, someone else also mentioned this problem. Is this a
bad iso? Are you gonna regenerate the alpha2 image soon? What is the
plan?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu for anyone?

2010-12-29 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi Tim & all,

I asked the same questions to myself several times :)

I tried to fully switch to Lubuntu several times but till now I always
went back to regular Ubuntu. I love Lubuntu's (LXDE's) simplicity and
leanness, but for various reasons there is always some small bug or
misbehavior that makes me go back to Ubuntu. I would love to have a
100% perfect Lubuntu (as most probably everybody here does), and make
a complete switch to this distribution, but it did not happen so far.
It is very clear to everybody who uses it that it becomes better and
better with each release. 11.04 is (or will be) better that 10.10 and
much better that 10.04. Congrats and big thank to everybody who puts
long hours and energy creating this new distribution polished.

The goal is clear, it is for old computers and/or low resource
computers (sometimes it's the same thing) and average people who just
installs it and uses it (no tweaking should be required).

However there is a user group (including myself in here) who uses it
on more powerful computers and likes this distro for it's leanness (or
looks?).

Of course it's frustrating if something does not work, but people here
on this mailing list are very friendly and helpful, help is almost
immediate. Thanks for this also!

Thank you Lubuntu/LXDE Team and I'm looking forward for the second beta image :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] lxde ppa & pcmanfm 0.9.8 mounting volumes

2010-12-29 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi,

I added lxde ppa to my 10.10 lubuntu. Got latest pcmanfm (0.9.8), but
my mapped volumes (other partitions) do not show up anymore. I have 2
other partitions that used to automount and show up in the earlier
filemanager (0.9.7). Now are gone. In my pcmanfm, under preferences @
Auto-mount option I have all checkboxes checked. If I insert a USB
stick it gets mounted and shows up in the filemanager.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] proxy setup?

2010-12-13 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Installed Rabbit4.8 (a simple java proxy, which is really easy to use
by the way), and got it up and running in no time. Probably squid is
also easy to set up, I just did not have the time to try it. LXProxy
is not acceptable for me, since logging out and back again is not
something I would do for a proxy setting change.

Unfortunatelly in Chromium 8.0.552.215 (67652) Ubuntu 10.10, I can not
add proxy configuration to my browser. When I click on Change proxy
settings, I'm getting:

"When running Chromium under a supported desktop environment, the
system proxy settings will be used. However, either your system is not
supported or there was a problem launching your system configuration.

But you can still configure via the command line. Please see man
chromium-browser for more information on flags and environment
variables."

This is too bad.

Is this also related to the fact that LXDE is a "simple window
manager" ? (bug related to the issue that Chromium can not determine
if it's default browser or not):
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=53066

Installed Midori and FF, both could be configured to use the above
mentioned proxy (in general, proxies could be added to these
browsers).

thanks
Zoltan

[Lubuntu-desktop] proxy setup?

2010-12-09 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi,

I started using (at least tried) Lubuntu 10.10 at my workplace (enterprise

Is it possible to setup a system/global proxy in lubuntu? Tried Lxproxy, but
did not work. Also couldn't find any info regarding this.

Can you please point me in the right direction (wiki, forum, etc..
anything).

did not pay attention.

Thanks. Basically what you guys suggested is to create a shortcut to pcmanfm

doesn't behave like one. So there is no way to create a real trash can

[Lubuntu-desktop] new menu item in lubuntu

2010-03-24 Thread Zoltan Matlak
I know it is an LXDE related question, but did not know where to post
it. I installed mc, then I would like to create a menu item in the
Main Menu, to launch mc in a terminal windw, without going to
lxterminal and type mc. Unfortunately could not make it work. Got
stuck. Does anybody have an idea how to do it (if it can be done)?

I created a new file, called mc.desktop under /usr/share/applications,
whick looks like:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Midnight Commander filemanager
GenericName=mc filemanager
_X-GNOME-FullName=MidnightCommander
Comment=blabla
Exec=lxterminal mc
Icon=mc
Terminal=true
Type=Application
Categories=Development;
StartupNotify=false
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=mc

Tried different variation for Exec, just to put "mc", or "lxterminal
mc", also Terminal true/false, but all variations I could think of
failed..

Thanks

[Lubuntu-desktop] new visual identity in lucid

2010-03-03 Thread Zoltan Matlak
*I just red on slashdot today:
"Canonical has launched a new visual
identityfor
the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Ubuntu is shedding its previous brown
look and adopting a more professional color scheme with purple and orange.
The colors will be used in a new GNOME theme and boot splash for Ubuntu
10.04. According to updated design documents that were
publishedin the Ubuntu wiki, 'light' is
the underlying concept behind the new visual
identity. It displaces the 'human' concept that has been part of Ubuntu's
theming and brand vernacular for the past five years. Ubuntu community
manager Jono Bacon has posted a
screenshotand
additional information."

Question: is it a goal to have all *buntu variants use the same character
set or to have common/similar look? Just wondering if the lubuntu splash and
other logos have to be changed? (saw the xubuntu as sample on the site
that's why I raised the question)

Thanks
Zoltan

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 "Shiny"

2010-02-27 Thread Zoltan Matlak
>What do you mean by applets ?
Java applets (used by some banks for online banking or used by some online
games). The only combination it doesn't work is chrome&icedtea. Applets work
with icedtea&ff and also works with sunjava&chrome.

One more think I forgot earlier. LXTerminal doesn't save history (as far as
I remember it never did). Closing and opening a new terminal "clears"
history. Is there a way to enable history saving between sessions?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 "Shiny"

2010-02-27 Thread Zoltan Matlak
I faced most of the problems the others reported earlier. Other than those,
 I noticed the following:

1. no flash plugin (earlier gnash used to be installed). Running "apt-get
install flashplugin-installer" solved it.

2. no applets with chrome(ium) and icedtea. I use online banking and this is
a MAJOR issue for me. Solution is to either download & install sun's java or
install Firefox to be able to run applets.

3. In networkmanager VPN is inactive, can not "Add". I installed "apt-get
install network-manager-vpnc vpnc resolvconf rdesktop". After this, I was
able to use VPN from command line, but in networkmanager it remained
disabled. Do I need to install any other package?

4. pcmanfm2 now seem less complete than in pre-alpha3 (the test image from a
week ago). Earlier in pcmanfm2 I was able to use applications:///
and trash:///. What happened, is this an older build? Just curious.

5. printing does not work for me (it worked before alpha3). Installed my
printer, it was recognized, added it, but nothing comes out (not even the
test page). Weird. In "manage print jobs" document print status shows
Completed. Any idea? Thanks

Other than that it's "shiny" :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Chrome & applets

2010-02-16 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi,
Sorry to disturb the lubuntu mailing list with such a question, but since
lubuntu is using chromium officially, this might be a relevant topic here,
too.

I noticed that in lucid, sun-java6 was removed, only openjdk is in the
repos. Can anybody point me to any information about how to enable/configure
chrome/chromium in lucid, so that I can load applets with openjdk6
(idedtea6)? Is it possible at all? Couldn't find any useful info regarding
this issue.

Any idea or information is appreciated.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 2 "Preview 2"

2010-02-11 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Yesterday I noticed one more thing in alpha2. In time and date settings
there is an option to synchronize time with internet server(s). But this
option is greyed out, since ntp is not installed. Installing just one
package - ntp - solved the problem. Since it's not a big addition, could
this be added to default lubuntu? Would be nice to have this enabled by
default.

[Lubuntu-desktop] lubuntu-base

2010-02-05 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi everybody,

I would like to ask for your help. I'm a ubuntu user for some time but not
very experienced in customization and scripting. My answer would be: how to
remove all apps from a default lubuntu-desktop installation (let's say from
alpha2) and leave the core components intact? I know this is not in the
scope of lubuntu, I'm just curious how can be this done (I consider it an
excercise for myself to learn, play with the repo and add/remove apps ... ).
Can it be done in several different ways? Probably... :)

I was thinking to remove all apps like graphics editor, browser, office
stuff, media players, chat clients, email client ... and just leave a
Ubuntu+LXDE+infrastructure. In infrastructure I mean Leafpad, ePdfView,
GPicView, Xfburn, Xarchiver, Wicd transmission, printing & BT support,
Galculator, Synaptic. My goal is to get a "lubuntu-base" system, so that
later any preferred app can be added with synaptic.

My solution is the following. Please be "cruel" and tell me if something is
wrong or can be done better or easier. Any suggestion/comment you might have
helps me learn more about customization and linux in general. Thanks guys.

0. sudo su -
1. apt-get update
2. apt-get autoremove --purge -y -m firefox mtpaint aqualung cheese smplayer
sylpheed abiword gnumeric pidgin xchat memtest86+
3. apt-get install -y -m lxde
4. apt-get install -f -y
5. apt-get dist-upgrade -y
6. apt-get autoremove --purge -y
7. apt-get clean

Q1: Am I removing pieces (components) that are needed? How can find out (or
how can I be sure) I'm not removing some useful packages?
Q2: is step 3 needed? will this install any missing dependencies I might
have deleted at step 2?

Thank again for reading.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Default Browser

2010-01-30 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Based on browser market share and popularity, other than IE and Safari,
Firefox and Chrome are the winners. So I would suggest to keep one of these
two and do not try to pick an exotic one, which is used by a very limited
number of people.

Firefox is mature and stable, would be my primary option for Lubuntu 10.04.
Chrome is fast and has Google behind it, but still in beta, so this would be
my suggestion in the Lubuntu 10.10 and beyond.

Please do not forget the available plugins and addons for which firefox is a
clear winner, but chromium addons are maturing and soon will be there too.

Thanks
Zoltan

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 2 "Preview 2"

2010-01-25 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Experience with Alpha2 release:

1. If there is an internet connection during install it installs OpenOffice
by default. If you don't want OO, just disable your internet connection, it
worked for me... this is just a temporary solution (I hope :)
2. Still can't change keyboard layout (no option in GUI, had to reinstall)
3. Can't change timezone (no option in GUI) - had to reinstall OS in order
to change it at setup time
4. xscreensaver /usr/share/backgrounds/ is still missing (directory has to
be created manually, same problem was there in Aplha1)
5. On my compaq nc6320 wifi card (broadcom) was not recognized (had to
install jockey-gtk). This is same in regular Ubuntu as well.
6. No flash plugin in browser (not sure if this is planned in final release
or not). I installed it manually.
7. Printing got included in this release (was missing in Alpha1), but stil
can not add printer ("New" and "Server/Settings" is disabled )

I need flash and Java (for applets) in my browser, plus my wifi card to be
recognized, so I run the following commands on top of a regular Lubuntu
install:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install jockey-gtk
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin
sudo apt-get install update-manager
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get autoremove

Did some disk space measurements with df, here are the values:
clean install with openoffice.org 1.749.168
clean install without openoffice 1.129.184
after adding flashplugin, sun-java6, jockey-gtk and update-manager 1.267.352

Overall it's great, I love it, and there is visible improvement. I'm very
excited and looking forward to new releases. Let me know if I can help more.
Thanks a lot!

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid release cycle

2010-01-05 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Julien,
How often do you plan on releasing new Lubuntu ISOs? Is it gonna be a case
by case decision or is there a sheduled plan? Just curious. Also when is the
next one coming out?
Thanks

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 1 "Preview"

2010-01-02 Thread Zoltan Matlak
A presentation (ppt) viewer would be also nice next to ePDFViewer pdf
viewer. For example most college (or other) courses and presentation
material is often in ppt. A simple view->print functionality would be
useful. I found pptview, but has lots of dependencies, so somebody with more
experience please suggest a better package.
thanks

How do I add a printer? I guess a Printer Configuration tool would be
needed.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Lucid Alpha 1 "Preview"

2010-01-02 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi,

I have a 10 year old Dell Latitude CPt (celeron 333, 512MB RAM). It's been
sitting in the closet for the past 4-5 years. Couldn't install Lubuntu on
it, neither could I run it from CD. Not sure what is the problem. During
install I saw several messages like:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block ,
then just got a blank (black) screen and cd is spinning. Is this problem
caused by a bad CD image?
I had winXP running on it before, then I tried Masonux (ubuntu 9.10 and
LXDE), which installed and run fine. If you can guide me I can do some
debugging what to do to figure out where is the problem, but I'm not an
experienced linux user, so can't do much more right now.

Another install I did on a 5-6 year old desktop (Shuttle SS51, P4 1.8GHz,
512MB ram). No problems at all, it flies (it feels much faster than regular
Ubuntu, but not sure how can it be measured). The only problem I had is that
I only allocated 2.2GB hard disk to the partition I was installing it, and
complained that it needs at least 2.4GB, so 2.6GB did the trick :). After
installation I checked and Lubuntu uses a little more than 1GB of disk
space. Nice.

After playing with this distro for a few hours these are my remarks:
Things I changed: desktop background and the Program/"Start" icon, I just
simply can't get used to lxde logo. To me it seems ugly, sorry :(

Things missing by Firefox from sites I visited: Flash and Java.

Thing I miss from Ubuntu: date/time has location and temperature
notification. Can this be added somehow? What component is that in regular
Ubuntu? That's something I got used to and really miss it.

Lubuntu is a really nice, clean, lean distro. Love it more and more.

Thanks guys.

[Lubuntu-desktop] lubuntu desktop image?

2009-12-11 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Hi all,

There has been lots of emails about what packages to include in the new
LUbuntu distribution. Seems like the list is somewhat final. I would like to
install it and test the current version. I could not find any iso image
available. Could you please guide me what to do?

As a temporary solution what I did, is I first got a masonux distribution
(9.10 beta2, it's an Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE distro) and then
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

Any ISO image and/or usb image would do (found some old ones from september,
but since then lot of things changed).

Thanks for your help in advance.
