Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] RAM and CPU Requierments

2009-11-22 Thread Julien Lavergne
We don't have for now the requierement needed for Lubuntu, because some
components are still in developpement.

However, I done some testing on Karmic + LXDE/Lubuntu packages updated from
Lucid + some adjustements, and a session start with 50-60 Mo, according to the
taskmanager. So in your case, the memory could be a bit short to be confortable.

For the processor, I can't test if it's useable. But It will be a good
candidate for testing Lubuntu Lucid, and I will be happy to have your feedback
on it.

You are right, that's why I said it's only OK for old PCs. And usually,
people won't use modern devices for such PCs. Indeed, 2.6 kernel
supports much more, but the quality of the code is falling since the
2.4->2.6 transition. I hope the upstream AND the kernel policy will
change. Since if they provide a bad base , and bad apps, no distro dev
can create a good release.

"Unfortunately some hardware will not run so well on the 2.4 kernel and
needs many of the features in the newer kernels. Sure the OS is light
but people (like myself) who don't have the slowest systems, still like
to leave maximum resources for actual applications to run rather than a
bloated desktop.

You can use Puppy Linux, DSL, TCL (as someone already mentioned), Deli
or whatever. But one can even build a
distro easily from Ubuntu packages. If there is a need, I can create a
demo VMware image or something.

One can use the DW search:
http://distrowatch.com/search.php

Select "Old computers". And hell yeah, you'll see a lot of distros.
Well, to be honest, I used a 133mhz PC with ~192mb ram, 5gb hdd. Guess
which distro? Xubuntu 7.xx IIRC. It was goddamn SLOW. But I didn't know
any alternative back then, I was a beginner. :)

And yeah, I agree with the BSD 'stuff'. FreeBSD / openBSD would perform
really well on such hardware. (I vote for FreeBSD, but that's really
just because I like that BSD from the many others. :))

ps.: Waiting for Nvidia x64 for FBSD. Wonder how LXDE looks like on
FBSD. :))

Although others have suggested other things, there are specific linux
distributions that can really work well with old (I mean REALLY old)
systems. The issue is that they're really complicated for daily use. One
good one. TinyCore linux would work amazingly well on it, but it's not for
new users by any means. It does, however, have a basic GUI. So, the option
is there.

Hello Eduard Gotwig,

This is much too under-powered for any distribution based on Ubuntu, as
Zsolt Peter Basak has already remarked, and in detail. However, there
are other Unix-like operating systems that can run on such hardware. The
trade off is that installation will be more challenging, and effective
use of the system will require using the shell more than a graphical
interface. GUI's need more powerful hardware. There is simply no way
around that requirement. On the plus side, you will gain a deeper
knowledge of the internals of the Unix-like OS.

If this interests you, check out the BSDs:

http://www.freebsd.org/

http://netbsd.org/

http://openbsd.org/

I would use FreeBSD for a desktop or low-end server. OpenBSD would be my
choice for a gateway or firewall system.

C David Rigby

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] RAM and CPU Requierments

2009-11-21 Thread Zsolt Peter Basak
Hello!

In my opinion, Lubuntu 10.04 won't be 100% usable on such PC. Why? It's
lightweight for sure, the whole dev teams try to makes it as light as
possible. But the base is still built from Ubuntu, which is not that
lightweight. This means, the team got its limit.

It would be possible to create a Lubuntu for super-low-end PCs. Would be,
but I'm not the person who is in charge. We could just add some APT rules,
build a super lightweight ISO from the *REALLY* basic install and add the
necessary stuff. Like this, your PC would be OK I guess. But these are just
mere calculations. I only used this method on a somewhat-old PC and it
worked like a charm back then.

Kernel.. Hmm. For super-low-end(super-old? :)) , one could use 2.4.* kernel
, since its really stable and the code is just much more better/cleaner than
the 2.6 series. Well. The rest of the team will give you more specific
answers.

In a nutshell: No. It is possible to make a build for such PC, but the
default won't be fast enough. IN MY OPINION..that is.

Best Regards
Zsolt Peter Basak aka. Shiki (from the -hu 'team')
