That's nice, Jared, make him preasure! :D Maybe these boys are as busy as
we're. Thanks for your votes. I'm counting... but with no utility, because
we already know when will the decision be.

Anyway, I'm pleased.

PS. Julien, I have no time right now, but yes, I'll try todo something with
the xscreensaver. But I think that we need to patch, and that's sooo hard,
and not really neede such level of customization (I'll change the logo).

Cheers!

The wiki is in a state of upgrade, they appear to have load issues on the
login side of things but it's definitely still being looked at. It seems to
work fine sometimes and other times be a bit slow. I've noticed some 502
proxy errors when logging in. Fortunately the person responsible for the
upgrades is in my LoCo so I get to pester them with constant updates on how
it's going and they in return try to fix it.

The backgrounds look great by the way, you always produce quality work!

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] wiki

2011-06-22 Thread (Rafael Laguna)
Ok, by parts.

1. I'll study the possibilities of customizing xscreensaver. If we can
do more Lubuntu-ish that will be great.

2. Yes, Fedora used to include some "sparkling soda" wallpapers in older
distributions, I think the character was more comic-like drawing (bold
style). Obviously I'm working on variations, this one was only a
finished mockup (not the first one, just the finished). Maybe another
one will change in colour or even in shape. But anyway, I don't think
they're the same. Maybe I'm wrong.

3. I can sure my Empathy (not included in Lubuntu, BTW) and Evince looks
Like the theme specified in LXAppearance. In my computer and in other
ones I've checked. If you're talking about the Empathy themes itslef
it's not the same (the GUI in Evince is the minimum expression of a
Glade interface, it's a simple GTK app, it must obey the daemon).

4. I don't know why KDE apps aren't smoothing fonts (possibly fixed with
qt4-qtconfig package), but Java apps may need to execute this: export
_JAVA_OPTIONS='-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=lcd'

Thank you.

The wallpaper looks good, but note the similarity to the older
'Bubbles' theme of Fedora, e. g.
http://kourge.deviantart.com/art/Fedora-Bubble-wallpaper-1280-37855649.

Anyway I think now it is time to start polishing the Lubuntu's GUI.
1) The most problematic may be the ugly xscreensaver login screen, noted here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/+bug/799525
2) Secondly, some applications (Empathy, Evince...) have the default
simple GTK skin, whereas other (Sylpheed, Inkscape...) look nice using
the clearlooks skin. Where is the difference? This should be addressed, too.
3) Thirdly, KDE and Java applications have no font antialiasing at all.

decent 'bank' of admins this was never a problem, but a few have fallen off
due to Real Life issues. Hearing last night that a 2nd team had also lost

Any way, with the usual help of the excellent people on Lubuntu, the 11.04

official wiki area. But my eyes are now tired, so would a few willing
volunteers go and check what mistakes I have made. It is over at

things like the checksums for md5's are correct on explanations, they blur

I'm more afraid about the runtime need of this engine. I'll try to make a
package so people will be able to test it in real. There is also the
possibility to ship it as an alternative, or to ship it by default with the
old theme if people want to keep the old one. Don't worry, it's not a waste
of time :)

2011-01-30 Thread (Rafael Laguna)
I'm afraid not. When you define a widget you are telling first which
engine will draw it, and then specify its design. So, putting two
definitions of one widget will cause that GTK will use the last one in
the gtkrc file.

Do you think that include Murrine in the distro is a problem? Look at
Elementary or Ambiance / Radiance. They are heavily based on Murrine and
they're fast, because using the Cairo lib (everything is vectorial). I
think the Murrine package is small (90 kb, Clearlooks is about 45 kb,
both compressed, after decompression they will grow up to 300 kb).

So, I can't imitate the widget style from Murrine using Clearlooks. In
fact is impossible, because Andrea Cimitan designed it looking for a
full set of eyecandy on the widgets (while keeping the speed, of
course).

If you think that's impossible to apply Ozone to Lubuntu, please, tell
me before spending several days :) and we'll look for another solution.

Sorry for this inconvenience.

I tested it on a natty virtual box, and the result of the panel theme is
just beautiful :)
For the gtk theme, there is still a depends on murrine engine. If you remove
the murine engine, many applications lost their theme. I must admit that the
result with murrine installed is very nice, but I would like to avoid the
installation of another gtk engine.

Is it possible to keep the murrine settings, and to fallback to another
settings using another engine if murrine is not installed ? I'm not a gtk
theme expert, so what is possible to do :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] wiki artwork reordered

2011-01-29 Thread (Rafael Laguna)
Just two little things, crew:

Wiki related

According to prior structures of our wiki, the proposals (only
Ozone) of incoming artwork for Lubuntu has been reordered.

- now you can access to the geenral artwork here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork
- the proposals for Natty are here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Natty/
- and so, Ozone is now here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Natty/Ozone

Sorry for this disturbing action, but I think we must be clear
and logical.

Theme related

With the indications from Simon Steinbeiß, Ozone is now Equinox
free and incredibly fast. I've reduced even more the file
structure and its dependencies on other files, so it's easily
installable. Please, check it out and comment. I appreciate it,
and final users too :)

I have just had a quick look over it all and from what I can tell Zach
has done a great job. I had a couple of links I fixed up (which I
think I originally changed incorrectly) and I have fixed up the
"Contact Us" link in the header so it points to the wiki contact us. I
did look into making a separate help.ubuntu contact us page but then
the sublinks and things got a bit messy.

Please double and triple check it all and great work Zach.

The only remaining problem I can see is the inconsistent use of capital letters
in headings.

[Lubuntu-desktop] wiki area

2010-09-26 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi Julien,

Zach now thinks we meet the wiki standards, as per the earlier e-mail asking
for conformation from Matthew and Phil. If they're okay with things I'd like
to move the pointer for https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp to
point to the new area at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp I will leave a
note on the page to say that is the new area, otherwise we get into the
nightmare of trying to keep both areas up to date.

Just to make Zach blush, because I can; I'd like to put on record his
outstanding help in copying the documents area over to its correct home.
He's a star !!!

*To the team:*
*
*
Would you please only update the
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp area, it will
cause them to be out of sync if we have information updated in the 'old'
area. I ask this as even though I have not had 'official' blessing for the
new area, it is where the documentation has to be stored to comply to ubuntu
standards.

I'm also waiting any "How To's" that you may have hidden on a scrap of paper
to put on there :-)

Regards,

Phill.

As you get time, could you start duplicating the general help documents over
to there. I know it's a pain, but I'd really like to keep this on-track for
10.10.10 and time is against me.

Once we've got the general help over there (evidently they can not be moved
en-masse), there should still be time to get the links updated and make
decisions as to what is 'wiki' and what it 'general help documentation'.

Thanks,

[Lubuntu-desktop] Wiki area

2010-08-09 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Oooh, these wiki pages :-)

It has been said that...

wiki.ubuntu.com is

not a website for documentation, it's for Ubuntu team organisation and

contributor information. We have a central resource for documentation

related to Ubuntu - it is help.ubuntu.com . I'd highly recommend that

any documentation created on wiki.ubuntu.com be moved to the help wiki

at help.ubuntu.com/community . I don't see any reason why derivatives

of Ubuntu can't also use that website if they would like to. The

Lubuntu material could live happily at

help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu .

Well, that's me told :-) With a little help from the wiki team, it should
not break anything for the documentation to be transferred over there, which
I would assume to be the contents of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp and all sub-pages. Leaving
just a pointer to the new (correct) area. I also propose to leave the
Development area totally where is is, as it is not "general / help
documentation" but that for which that part of the wiki is for. The
help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu area would mention and have a pointer to
it. That way we would be following "best practice" for the project.

Views / Questions, anyone?

Regards,

Phill.
P.S. that was not just directed at Lubuntu, they're not "having a go" at us;
quite the opposite.

I don't think it's so out of date. Just need to complete it if it's
necessary.

We already change the structure of the wiki recently. Some pages just
need to be up-to-date, not sure many of them need to be deleted
completely.

Hi,

I've not ignored things, I'm still learning and hope you are all happy with
my layout so far. I do not understand how / what the area you wish to be
split / added to.

I think we should put a link on the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ to

Applications and other Features, it's more a description of Lubuntu than

a "Getting Involved" stuff.

There are also pages on there that are out of date.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ContactUs is out of date, there are others
that are also well out dated. Can I have a general clean up of those also?
I'm told that the 'system' keeps backups, but I assure you that I would hold
a local copy and upload to the server any pages that I want to edit a lot
and also for any pages I nominate for deletion.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/SubTeams/DocumentationSubTeam Would you
check with https://wiki.ubuntu.com/c-david-rigby that I add my self to that
list.

Sorry to be a pain on checking things out; but you seem to be the only one
who replies when I am asking for the structure of how the Lubuntu team is.

Keep going; lubuntu is very well liked by those who discover it. You and all
the dev and testing team are absolute stars.

Regards,

Phill.

[Lubuntu-desktop] wiki page

2010-07-09 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi Julien,

I apologise for the multiple messages coming from my editing the wiki area.
I've got a couple of wiki people helping me with links etc. As they are not
trivial edits, I feel uneasy to use that tag.

Hi Gang,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp

I'd like to do a make-over of that area. What is proposed is:

'Documentation and Help' becomes 'Help'
'https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReleaseManagementDiscussion' is removed, as
it is out of date.
'https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp#Applications and other
Features' is moved to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved
i also propose that details of 10.10 is moved to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Developers with the details of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu#Test
Lubuntu being moved over there, leaving just a 'stub'.

With the help of the wiki team, I've done some editing for things like the
inclusion of code to be typed into a terminal session.

Just so as everyone knows, I'm part of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BeginnersTeam/FocusGroups/Wiki/SoD2010 so, our own
wiki area is a good one for me to get help on.

As it is the aim of lubuntu to be adopted by Canonical, as per my previous
posting I'd like to ensure we comply with their documentation standards.

I'd appreciate any input as to what you'd like to see on there along with
proof reading to ensure any spelling mistakes etc. are corrected. All those
on the mailing list who have their launchpad accouts can log in and edit the
pages.

As always, your input is needed.

Well, that's my and the wiki teams ideas, please shout up anything that you
think are wrong, I will take deafening silence to mean "Just get on with it"
:-)

Regards,

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Wiki reorganisation

2010-04-21 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi,

1) is the removal of how to update lubuntu a wise choice as there is not yet
a option in menus to do it
2) does lubuntu still need 9.10 instructions koala is so 'last year' and
would just confuse n00bs

As i requested earlier, can we all post up our various documents for the
project into one place. I think that the wiki page is the best place for
them as it should be the 'one-stop shop' for everything lubuntu, even if it
does have external links (I have seen wiki pages linking to non-*buntu
pages) such as
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStickQuick

The wiki has been reorganized. Thank you to David and Luther! The
start page became quite long and it seemed appropriate to seperate
content in different pages.

* The start page remains: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu

* The discussion about applications is now here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Applications
Please join the discussion about lubuntu applications and subscribe to
the page changes.

* The overview of members is now here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/SubTeams
As a member and contributor to Lubuntu, please add your name to the
Subteam's pages. There are links to subteams coordination pages. We
can use those to coordinate the work among members.

It has been astounding to see the increase of members in the lubuntu
team. I am looking forward to everyone getting more involved.

All the best,

Mario
